Prelude and Fugue

This was probably mentioned at some time, but a very good recording of the Prelude and Fugue was remastered for CD. Here is the youtube of it:

Edit, I am not sure why the video is not inline. Oh well, you can follow the link.

This piece received a new recording a few years ago by "The President's Own" Marine Band.

The mp3 can be downloaded for free here. I think the actual CD can still be found and at accessible prices.

That's true, and it's an interesting take, but I prefer the original Stan Kenton recording myself (the rest of the CD is pretty damn good too -- contemporary classical music meets big band jazz)..

Hearing it for the first time. Love the jazz parts, but I'm not a fan of these contemporary exercises of style. There is always parts that are a bit too agressive for me.

Those are my favourite bits! Sound like pure Williams to me. Why are they 'exercises in style?'

Why are they 'exercises in style?'

Bach wrote 48 preludes and fugues for his Well-Tempered Clavier. That's a statement, that's a Work with a big W (Oeuvre in french).

JW' "Prelude and fugue"... a unique name, without key, not numbered, represents, and correct me if I'm wrong, a kind of work pretty unique among his concert works. It's why I call it an 'exercice in style'.

Over the years, JW rather seemed to favor the concerto form, at least, it's the kind of work he agrees to publish... ;)
