Williams filmography in Bluray - a list

well, just temporarily, if anyone is interested in a particular Bluray, he can check the review here, and it says if the Williams related content is HD or SD:

Thanks a million for the link, filmmusic!! This looks like it will fit the bill in the interim. From the review of the Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray (emphasis added):

Music and Sound (480p, 15:59) features Composer John Williams speaking on the role of music in the film and how it fits within the realm of the Spielberg/Williams collaborations, while Sound Designer Gary Rydstrom speaks on how the absence of music enhanced the realism of the battle scenes, his research to create the most realistic period sound possible, the process of editing the sounds together, and the construction of the sound design for the film's epic climactic battle in Ramelle.

Generally, rarely bonus content concerning the music will be in HD.

2 instances are War Horse and Adventures of Tintin.

I think all the rest could be SD.

Is that a good movie?

Well, it's not a masterpiece but I enjoyed it.

To tell you the truth I think I enjoyed it most due to the Williams score.

I think it added very much to it.

It will be worth buying for the music heard immediately after the main title (at a railroad station, if I'm not mistaken).

I quite like The Rievers suite!

it was a particular highlight of JW's 1998 Barbican concerts.

Hello all,

I would like to know from someone who bought a "Kino edition" for Europe,

if the Blurays (which are indicated as Region A), were tested for Europeen Bluray players ?

(Sometimes Region A blurays can be played everywhere).

I am interested to buy some (Reivers, Missouri break) but don't know if my PS3 will play them.

Thank you so much by advance

According to the back cover and this here:

http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/multi_comparison.php?disc1=5746&disc2=5747&hd_multiID=2341#auswahl

Missouri Breaks is Region A.

So, it won't play in Region B Players.

(unless you have a Region free player)

Better ask for confirmation here:

The BR cover for THE REIVERS is rather bad, but the film itself is decent. At some point in the future, when I get some cash flow, I will need to sit down and order all these BluRays. I have all of Williams' films, but either in DVD or file format. Upgrade needed.

For anyone that is interested Arrow has a sale until 6th of July and you can get The Fury, The Long Goodbye and The Killers for 11.17 euros each!

(these are Region B Blurays)

Let me remind you that the first 2 have isolated score tracks.

(actually The Long Goodbye an iso score +FX)

For anyone that likes The Fury, I strongly recommend this Bluray! :)

The Patriot Bluray is the extended version in all counties, but I just learned that it might be the theatrical cut in Russia!

It says duration 164 minutes and I found another "source" around too that confirms this.

I kinda still can't believe Williams score that one for some reason.

Yeah. I have trouble comprehending it too. John Williams scored a Roland Emmerich film. :eh: (unless you're talking about the film itself and not the director)

I feel the same way about Alfonso Cuaron, albeit for different reasons. Very different from Williams' usual type of director.

Kino Lorber has a sale this whole month, and you can get Missouri Breaks for a bit lower in the price:

http://www.amazon.com/Missouri-Breaks-Blu-ray-Marlon-Brando/dp/B00NQKW8MO/

There were 6 copies some hours ago but now it's temporarily out of stock.

DVD vs Bluray:

Reviews for The Reivers with screenshots for anyone interested:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Reivers-Blu-ray/128678/

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film5/blu-ray_reviews_68/the_reivers_blu-ray.htm

Maybe I would buy it in the future, but it doesn't have English subtitles which is a big drawback for me.

No Bluray, but the Mystery Science Theater version of Daddy-O (first theatrical film scored by Williams), has been released on DVD from Shout.

(personally I don't like these versions of films with comments)

http://www.amazon.com/Mystery-Science-Theater-3000-XXXIII/dp/B00VX2208Y/

In this version, when Williams' name appears on the screen, they comment:

"Oh, no! John Williams, before he heard Stravinsky"

Anyway, the "clean version" of the film can also be purchased in this Region B DVD:

Did Williams ever do any interviews for JAWS 2 for previous releases? If not, I'm curious if they got him to say anything now.

There's the interview he did for the June/July 1978 issue of Flims And Filming. He talks about jaws 2, and a whole bunch of other stuff, including a proposed Peter Pan musical with SS, and Michael Jackson (!).

is there any news on the sound of Jaws 2? will it be remixed in 5 (or even 7) .1, or will it be the original mono mix?

Apparently there isn't any more detail, but now that you mention it i hope they include the original audio.

the dvd has only the original mono, i don't think they would do a new remix now for the bluray.

Often times mono film mixes are presented as a 2.0 track rather than a 1.0 track so the sounds come out of both your front speakers instead of your center only.

Nice. I hope they at least MENTION the music in any of the extras. I see that neither the Previns nor Williams are mentioned anywhere.

Haven't seen this still.

I understand it's a campy trashy film?

Yeah, in a way. But it's been a few years since I saw it. It's certainly not as iconic as Russ Meyer's sequel (sort of) BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, though, which has become an iconic cult film over the years.

The soundtrack is rather "spacey" and dated, and the Williams trademarks in the arrangement are IMO less visible than some of the other arrangement work he did.

Angela's Ashes coming in UK in a few weeks.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Angelas-Ashes-Blu-ray/dp/B01JM7XP4O

Special Features

  • Alan's Ashes--2016 Interview with Alan Parker
  • Commentary with Alan Parker

  • Commentary with Frank McCourt
  • Behind the scenes featurette

It seems the extras (except for the new interview) are the same with the ones in the US DVD.

If you have a facebook account and you'd like, let TT know that you'd be interested in a Bluray of Images in this post:

;)

Thanks for the tip! One of the best films in all of Williams' resume, and without any good release (not counting the shoddy Italian DVD version). It's a scandal!
