I am very familiar with his film work but no so much his concert pieces. Can you recommend his best concert pieces which have a higher tempo and are quite exciting to listen to?

My favorite is the Cello Concerto.

His music for violin and orchestra (Violin concerto and TreeSong) are fenomenal.

The Bassoon Concerto "Five Sacred Trees" is one of the most easy to get into, as is his Tuba Concerto (his most recorded concerto, by the way... a new recording is just out on Sony).

Of the fanfares and celebratory works, "for The President's Own" as become one of my favorites.

But I could add all his concert works, as I love all of them, much more than most of his film works.

For faster, thematic stuff, you're better off with the fanfares and briefer 'event compositions' -- like those Jay mentions.

Not that there aren't fast movements in his longer concert pieces too, but they tend to be less accesible that way.

These few tracks appears on the excellent compilation "The Music Of America" (2010)

Summon The Heroes by John Williams on Grooveshark

Hymn To New England by John Williams on Grooveshark

Sound the Bells! by John Williams on Grooveshark

If you mean concert (non film music) I recommend:

Cello concerto (1st movement and 3rd Movement)

Soundings (really good piece)

Harp concerto.

Have listened to other works but IMHO most are not very memorable.

I would avoid all the concerti and Heartwood. It sounds like you want something that is easily accessible, and while these are great, they all take some time to truly appreciate.

His easiest to digest concert works are:

- Liberty Fanfare

- all his Olympic pieces (there are 4 of them)

- Fanfare for Fenway

- For the President's Own

- Sound the Bells!

Agreed. We have to look at the topic starter's parameters, not merely recommend concert pieces of any type that we like.

I thought I'd encourage OP to explore something beyond what he expects to enjoy, since everyone else seems to have provided sufficient answers fitted to his specifications.

Should I have been the fourth person to recommend Sound The Bells!?
