Finally read Bear's blog post. It was a wonderful read, especially the whole ending. Thanks for bringing my attention to it!

Has John Williams mentored anyone in a similar capacity? I'm assuming Bernstein's faculty position afforded him more opportunities to interact with emerging talent.

Goldsmith was a teacher with a gruff personality. Marco Beltrami described being mentored by him as unpleasant. Goldsmith wanted to write and wasn't particularly sympathetic towards his students though probably wished to be...much like Chris Young. They probably just didn't have the patient disposition for teaching though they had the heart for it.
