Uh you do realize that films are edited to music most of the time, right? A composer doesn't need a final cut to write anything, particularly themes.

Where did you hear that? They don't need a final cut to write themes of course, but they do need the final cut to write the cues, that's why they have spotting sessions. To determine where the music goes with the edit of the film. Not the other way around

I think Koray is implying that films are edited to SOME music (ie, the temp track), not necessarily the final score by the film's composer.

I think Koray is implying that films are edited to SOME music (ie, the temp track), not necessarily the final score by the film's composer.

Yes; but whether it's temp track or original music is beside the point, editors typically work with music when it comes to action scenes and such.

I meant that if editing film to music happens "most of the time," why would Spielberg brag about doing it like it was something special?

Because it's a big compliment to the composer's music that the filmmakers bend their work to it. Also because it's typically temp music, where the editors will craft scenes to other film scores or samples and then have a composer come in to add original music to the scene. Allowing a composer to write without the influence of a temp track is a privilege. Having the movie edited to his or her music is an even greater one.

I'm actually surprised Giacchino is recording Jupiter Ascending in London. I know filming took place mostly in the UK, as well as post-production work, but I thought Giacchino was one of the staunchest supporters of L.A.-based recordings.

Should be interesting to hear UK musicians interpret Giacchino's style...

It's probably a contractual obligation due to the movie being primarily shot in the UK. I believe the same thing nearly happened with John Carter but Giacchino insisted on recording in the US.

Well what made MG finally caved in?

You know if MG was the one who was probably given the opportunity to score SW7, it's a highly likely possibility he will gonna use the LSO.

Yeah, that surprised me. I thought for sure Giacchino would've acquiesced for John Carter, but I think he had wiggle room in his contract for having input on where the score was recorded. WB and Marvel Studios' contractual obligations are much harder to wiggle out of though.

The crunch of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and John Carter may have swung things. Both were recorded concurrently in LA, with Giacchino and his team alternating between the two films.

Actually MI4 was done recording before John Carter started

Mission Impossible 4 recordings sessions were August 29th and October 3-5, 2011

John Carter recording sessions were October 17-18, November 15-16, December 7-8, 2011.

I think the movie looks cool, and I'm really liking Giacchino's music. I wonder if it was composed for the trailer or if it's actually from the film.

Huh, I noticed the music sounded pretty good and distinctive from the usual trailer junk. Glad to know it was written by Giacchino. Looking forward to how the score turns out.

I don't know what to think about the movie though.

Wow, cool trailer! I had no idea what to expect with this film, and I have to say I'm impressed with what I see.

I feel like it's been a while since a Sci-fi movie came out that just took risks and went wild with Sci-fi ideas instead if playing it safe. Can't wait to see the final product, hope it excels!

Instantly recognized Michael Giacchino's music...unmistakable percussion. From this thread it looks like it is actually his? I would imagine it's been specifically trailer-fied for these purposes.

Joey too if I recall. Most of us around here have given it our seal of approval. It's a wonderful movie.

Agreed. I've been waiting to hear what he was going to do with this one for a while. My indecisive gif was directed only towards the film itself, to be clear.

I thought he was constipated.
