Can you remember/name your 10 first soundtracks?

Do you remember the 10 first soundtracks you've ever heard?

meaning in album form, not in a film...

My first 10 soundtracks, were LP transfers to tape, from a record shop.

(I didn't have a record player neither a cd player at the time).

These are the soundtracks that I was listening over and over (usually every night before I sleep with the lights turned off) and I know pretty well...

-Dracula (Kilar) (this was the one that started it all)

-Hook (Williams)

-Batman Returns (Elfman)

-The Piano (Nyman)

-The Three Musketeers (Kamen)

-Free Willy (Poledouris)

-The Last of the Mohicans (Jones, Edelman)

-The Age of Innocence (Bernstein)

-Jurassic Park (Williams)

-Schindler's List (Williams)

Would love expansions of the ones that aren't expanded yet..

Think I can remember the order of the first ones I sought out.

CE3K - Williams

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea - Paul J. Smith (had to make my own "recording" of this since it took 54 years for the real thing to be released)

ST:TMP - Goldsmith

2001: A Space Odyssey (the old MGM record)

The Music Of Cosmos (nice compilation, good for dozing off to)

ROTJ - Williams

Fantastic Voyage - Rosenman

The Lion King - Zimmer

Jurassic Park - Williams

Apollo 13 - Horner

Apollo 13 was the one that really set off my score collecting. Went back and filled in all the holes before that, and never missed picking up an album that piqued my interest after.

I haven't owned many film soundtracks, so I might as well list all the ones I can remember. Might have missed one or two.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (Michael Kamen)

Far and Away (John Williams)

The Last of the Mohicans (Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman)

Gettysburg (Randy Edelman)

The Lord of the Rings (Leonard Rosenman)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Howard Shore)

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Howard Shore)

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Howard Shore)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (The Complete Recordings) (Howard Shore)

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (The Complete Recordings) (Howard Shore)

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (The Complete Recordings) (Howard Shore)

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Howard Shore)

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Howard Shore)

King Kong (James Newton Howard)

Taxi Driver (Bernard Herrmann)

There Will Be Blood (Jonny Greenwood)

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Alberto Iglesias)

No idea the exact order at, or even specifically what the first 10 where... however, I know for 100% sure what my first 3 were:

The Star Wars Anthology Box Set

The next 7 were probably some combination of:

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Jurassic Park

ET

Batman 89

Back To The Future 2

I wish I knew for sure...

I know I had several soundtracks on cassette when I was younger, but these didn't inspire my soundtrack collecting craze, they were just gifts when my mom decided to buy me Disney tapes. I remember having Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast on tape. One of the first CDs that entered the house was The Lion King, but that didn't do it either.

The first soundtrack I had when I knew I wanted to seek out and listen to movie background music was the Star Wars Anthology. That was a game changer. My dad put a lot of miles on the car hunting it down for me.

Beyond that, I would have to list Jurassic Park, Star Trek First Contact, Star Trek V, Star Trek VI, Apollo 13 (OST with songs and dialogue), Gettysburg (2 disc edition), and The Last Crusade. Rounding out the top ten were two Laserlight recording albums, one of sci-fi movie themes and the other of cop shows.

I had a handful on cassette - Jurassic Park, Batman 1989, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mission Impossible (1996), and Elfman's comp "Music for a Darkened Theater vol 1"

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire is my first-ever CD, and three Star Wars Special Editions were shortly thereafter.

I used to get free punchout promos as a kid from a family friend that owned a record store. I recall having stuff like The Rock and Jurassic Park on cassette, but then there was random stuff like Snake Eyes, so I'm not exactly sure what were my first actual 10. But if we go by the ones that stuck with me, it would be:

1. Jurassic Park

2. The Rock

3. Face/Off

4. The Nightmare Before Christmas

5. The Phantom Menace

6. Signs

7. Attack Of The Clones

8. Antz

9. Spider-Man

10. Road To Perdition

Wow. Great question! I haven't thought about those early days in years. I'm not sure if I can nail all 10 just right (it's been a quarter of a century, after all), but I know some of them for sure.

The first was Close Encounters, which my father already owned on LP. He also had 2001: A Space Odyssey, though I don't think I gave that much attention at the time. I wore the grooves out of CE3K, though. I also constantly listened to a recording of Silverado I'd gotten from a friend. (Interestingly, I used to have it on while reading Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series of novels, and for years there was a stronger association between that music and those books than with the western throwback movie.)

Once I realized I had a serious geeking problem and came to terms with it, I sought out more music. I clearly recall that the next two albums were Superman and Star Trek II.

I got a recording of Back to the Future from another friend around this time. I also remember going on to pick up E.T., Aliens, and then (of course) the three Star Wars scores.

So there it is, I think. I might be off on one or two, but this is pretty close to how things started for me:

- Close Encounters

- Silverado

- Superman

- Star Trek II

- Back to the Future

- E.T.

- Aliens

- Star Wars

- The Empire Strikes Back

- Return of the Jedi

Oh, I know I was also gifted a 2001 soundtrack album, but not having seen the movie at the time, I associated it more with classical music than movie music.

The first ten are hard to reconstruct. But it all started with Star Wars (first the Gerhardt recording with the CE3K suite, then the Skywalker Symphony album) followed by The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration. My first actual OST album was Jurassic Park. Among the first to follow must have been Hook and Last Crusade. The Astral Symphony Trek compilation must also have been an early one. My first Goldsmith must have been First Contact, but I didn't get that until mid 97 or so.

Well, it was hearing John Williams' music playing outside of Star Tours at Disney-MGM Studios in the early 90s that first suggested to my psyche that these symphonic scores could be enjoyed outside of the films. I was already so familiar with the scores and enjoyed hearing them this way, without the picture, dialogue and sound effects. The resulting quest for soundtracks immediately resulted in the acquisition of Last Crusade, Jurassic Park and the Star Wars Anthology. I still remember the excitement in the following years of seeing and purchasing Raiders, E.T., the Star Wars Special Editions, Jaws and Superman. Around 2000, I finally got the Japanese Polydor Temple of Doom through the Star Wars fan club. It was seriously in a catalog with Luke's Bespin jacket and Phantom Menace action figures that came with those stupid talking chips.

I also got my Temple of Doom CD as a Japanese import via mail order, but it was the LucasArts catalog that came bundled in with their computer games

The Lion King

Star Wars Trilogy (Sony)

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Lost World

The Empire Strikes Back

Star Wars

The Peacemaker

Titanic

The Mask of Zorro

Jurassic Park.

To be honest, memory might be a bit fuzzy. The Lion King was there first. I loved Batman music by Goldenthal and Elfman and played the VHS tapes to death, but had no score albums. Got Forever album from my parents but was disappointed it had only songs. My first Elfman album was Sleepy Hollow (also had Men in Black song album, but that had only two cues). I also remember having a compilation which had some Star Trek and Independence (which, I thought, had a lame theme). Might have had another Disney album (Pocahontas?). And Apollo 13 was there somewhere as well. The things on the list were the first proper score albums I remember. The song compilations don't count.

I can remember my first three CD's - a compilation with some Golden Age music, Dracula and Seven Years in Tibet.

My first Goldsmith was bought in 2000 and it was Insurrection. The next one was The 13th Warrior.

Funny how those "firsts" are still precious to me and how they shaped my tastes.

The very first ones (my mother had the great idea of buying the LPs for me), a long time ago (1982, 1984, 1989):

E.T.

Gremlins

Ghostbusters

Batman

A great start, wasn't it?

My first CDs (1990-1991):

Twin Peaks

Total Recall

I'm not too sure what the other 4 wereI guess I could find out if I thought about it more.

Possibly:

The Star Wars Anthology box set (not sure if it matches the date of release)

Superman (single CD edition)

An American Tail

Raiders of the Lost Ark

The first film music albums I owned were compilation cassettes and LPs (early to mid-'70s), where I first noticed John Williams' name as the composer of The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, Earthquake, and Jaws, but never had the OSTs until a few years later. After Star Wars came out I bought the Meco version on cassette and the single of the main theme (OST) -I used to buy singles of all kinds, including Williams' Fiddler on the Roof and Superman, since they were cheaper than LPs.

I don't remember my first 10 soundtrack albums, but they were all purchased between 1977 and 1981 and probably included Jaws, Star Wars, CE3K, Superman, Superman II and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

And I used to have a lot of cassette recordings I made at the cinema and from the TV speakers.

My first soundtrack CD was Sleepy Hollow.

And these followed:

Gladiator

Fellowship of the Ring

Harry Potter 1

The Sixth Sense

Further than that, I don't know. My early collecting days were mostly single tracks (I burned a CD in 2003 with just over 100 mp3s. That was my collection at the time, and I still have that CD).

Jurassic Park is an interesting case - I don't know when I first saw the film, heard the score, or got the main theme. All I know is I got the CD sometime in the early noughties.

ROBOCOP (Poledouris)
THE TERMINATOR (Fiedel)

GHOSTBUSTERS (Bernstein)
BATMAN (Elfman)

THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (Herrmann)

STAR WARS (Williams)

I'm glad my parents didn't really mind ratings. I don't think I'd be as bright as I am today (in some areas) if it weren't for that.

I remember turning up the volume on the television and using my cassette recorder to make a tape of music from this film when I was a kid. I was overjoyed when they finally released the score a few years ago. Now if they'd release complete versions of Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Pete's Dragon, Mary Poppins, The Ten Commandments, and Snow White the kid inside of me would be happy forever.

After my "inital phase", I hunted down all the Williams stuff I missed. Some were very had to find (Witches of Eastwick, JFK...) so every time I went to a record shop I'd flip through the soundtrack section. I scored the Japanese c.d.'s of ToD and Spacecamp in the early 90's

There's some I'd see on the shelf but took me a long time to pick up (Presumed Innocent, The River,Always...)

Don't seem to remember really, might well have been a toss-up between Air Force One and The Best of Star Trek CD followed at some point by Battle of Britain/A Bridge Too Far. Hazy but good.

EDIT- scrawled inside my Battle of Britain CD liner it says "2002", so I guess that might well have been the first.

I did that too!

Imagine my surprise when I found out some stores sold the music that was playing in movies!

I never recorded anything in movie theaters, but from the television, indeed.

Doing this, I noticed that a name came up often: Superman, Raiders, Jaws were all by that John Williams guy, the same as for E.T..

As for stores, I was dismayed by the number of editions of the Star Wars trilogy scores and did not buy any until the Anthology set because it was clear all the others only featured parts of the music, which I wanted in its entirety.

Which reminds me a thing I ought to have recalled instantly yesterday: among my very first three score CDs, and possibly the first one I picked, was John Williams Conducts John Williams: The Star Wars Trilogy; it did not have all the music, but had the major tracks.

Since then, I've always started by playing the first track on every new device I got that could play CDs (CD player, DVD player, computer CD/DVD/BR drive, BR player).

I still have my original Last Crusade and Anthology. I've replaced many older CDs (including those) because they were basically destroyed when I was actually using the CDs prior to this modern era when you can just store digital versions on a hard drive and then store the physical media. I got the original Jaws, E.T. and Back to the Future soundtracks at Universal Studios Florida during Summer vacations.

i also had recorded an audio cassette from TV.

I wish i had kept it now, for nostalgia purposes..

The music that I remember it had was:

The 2 oscar ballet segments with Ghost-Home Alone-Avalon-Havana-Dances with wolves and The Firm-The fugitive-Schindler's List-The Remains of the Day-The Age of Innocence.

E.T. end credits, Superman Main Titles, The Simpsons Titles, The Death of Penguin from Batman Returns, Ghostbusters end credits, Lawrence of Arabia main titles, Beauty and the Beast (80s TV series) intro, and the music from this:

Return of the Jedi SE

My first one would have to be Chariots Of Fire, although not by choice; it was my father's CD, and since he played it a lot, it served as my introduction to Vangelis

Then:

Heat

Total Recall: The Deluxe Edition + Scent Of A Woman (simultaneous Amazon order)

Blade Runner (the '94 album)

2 Blade Runner bootlegs ()

A.I. (promo CD)

My memory gets really hazy after that point

First one I bought was Das Boot (Doldinger) back in '91/92 or so. I was around 7/8 at the time. But I remember Jurassic Park being one of the early titles, as well.
