It's a great CD. Not an easy one to listen, mind you, but essential to have. And the funky suite from the third film at the end is fun.

Karol

Agreed. Not an easy listen work but very compelling. JG succeeds in creating a world with his score in the most vivid way.

I love that suite. But the score has since had its own release on FSM.

I picked up the Varese release of Jerry Goldsmith's Planet of the Apes for about 5 Euros in Paris recently. I haven't listened to it yet. Is it any good?

It's great! Just dont expect hummable themes ala 90's Jerry.

This is really "avant garde" stuff.

Today I finally broke down and purchased the complete Star Trek: TOS collection from La La Land. My wallet hates me, but my ears will love me. And I can always console myself by remembering that for however many more decades I live, I'll never have to buy another TOS album - seems about as definitive as you can get!

Agreed, but it's no less brilliant for it. As Walter Matthau says in "JFK": "f***ing outta control!".

The other week at a record fair (a sort of indoor yard-sale for music) I bought

Silva Screen "The Last valley",

Varese "Midway",

Varese "Last of The Mohicans",

"Advise And Consent" (Jerry Fielding - I am no longer a JF virgin, yay me!),

a promo CD of "Meteor",

Ryko "Heaven's Gate",

something called "Baaria" by Ennio Morricone (me, neither),

and the Prometheus "The White Buffalo", all new, and all sealed and all for (get this!) £16, that's about $28!!!!!!!

Not a bad record for this vacinity...

Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Vol. 1 the other day (it's better than the non event of a score)

I'd buy that disc for the great marketing stunt that it is. And that includes the cover art. :)

I was buying a lot of music in HMV and it was part of the "2 for €12" deal so I got it. It's a pretty feel good album to be fair. Nice flow to it and some well chosen songs.

Looks like LLL didn't technically sell out of Planet Of The Apes ;)

Every label holds on to a few extras of every title in case anyone's gets damaged in the mail.

It sold out suddenly and unexpectedly when I was away somewhere so missed my chance to get it the normal way. Well also it sold so poorly they never pressed the second half of the intended run.

It's not that kind of score that many people want expanded. Having said that, it's so well produced and liner notes are very detailed. Very elaborate. I'm glad to have it.

Got my mits on Superman and Schindler's List. More...more Williams.

Which version of Superman did you buy? The original OST, Rhino 2-disc set or the Blue Box?

looks like I got the Rhino 2-disc.

Oddly I never got round to having Superman on disc despite loving it for yonks.

I just wish they would have released Superman: The Movie separately in some way. The other scores have their moments, but I don't care much for or about them. I'm not spending $120.

Yeah. For a person interested mainly with the first and the fourth score the Blue Box is just too darn expensive.

This Rhino set suffices for me for the time being. Perhaps I'll finally land a steady job one day soon and can let my inner collector completely loose.

I suspect that'll be my route as well.

Don't forget the book, it's worth its weight in gold. A FANTASTIC addendum that details what went into writing the scores and the movies they accompany, even if half of them don't interest you.

The blue box is one of my most cherished purchases. 1,2 and 4 are the main attractions, 3 is good and even the animated series has a couple of worthy cues.

The Superman fan in me is completely satisfied with it.

The question is: Would any of those other scores sell well enough to justify their remastering and licensing fees? Bundling them in with Superman: The Movie was probably a smart move.

Agreed, but I bought "S:II" on vinyl, when it was released in the U.K. in April 1981. I even bought the "Main Title" picturedisc.

It doesn't seem like a reasonable purchase at first but, once you get it, it's just pure joy. You kind of get it. I bought one not long ago and it's great. The first score never sounded better, fourth is a msrvelous discovery, two I enjoy and three contains some gems, too.

Having said that, Rhino set is a solid and safe buy.

PICKED UP AT LA-LA LAND'S OFFICES

Bear McCreary - The Best of Battlestar Galactica

Never heard of this. What exactly is it?

That haul of yours must be one of the biggest ever for a 'civilian'.

It's a promo (never commercially available) that has tracks from all four seasons, including a slightly alternate version of "Resurrection Hub."

I've got to make myself a Best of BSG, because I like certain tracks for each season but definitely not the majority.

I jumped on the hype back when the series was hot, but they're among my least listened to albums.

They have tons of filler, which is reasonably serviceable for the documentary style of the series but not very interesting on CD. But there are several major gems on the albums as well. Those I listen to quite often.

That's interesting. I think I've seen rumours of future Battlestar releases, most notably a live dvd of one of the concerts Bear did. I wonder if a new album would be a 'best of' or completely unreleased stuff. As the series gets older, I wonder if it gets cheaper to release more material.

After the show ended, they put together a nice coffee table book for the cast and crew full of pictures of and stories from everyone who worked on the show, across all departments. The neat thing was they cut the corners off it like the paper in the show :) Also included attached to the back cover was a "Best of BSG" CD assembled by Bear McCreacy, something like 79:58 of his personal favorite cues from the 4 seasons.

I found a few pics of the book online:

I can post the track list of the CD if you like, you can assemble it from the existing 4 season soundtracks.

Wow, that book looks really cool. Would be good to see the tracklist. Cheers.
