E.T. The Isolated Extra Terrestrial

Recommended Posts

Last week I recieved the 4 disc Laserdisc of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial containing the complete isolated score.

Despite no less then 3 CD releases of this score, there is still music that has not been released. And since the isolated score has fo far been available to most people (including myself) in lossy audio. I took it upon myself to record the isolated score track using my trust old Philips Audio Compact Disc Recorder (CDR 760)

765max.jpg

This records in CD quality (16 bit 44.1 Khz, uncompressed digital)

The isolated score on the laserdisc set was presented in the same resolution, except that it is analog instead of digital.

The tracklist below represents the score as it is used in the film.

01 Main Title 1:08

02 Far From Home - ET Alone 6:53

03 Elliott Explores the Cornfield 1:18

04 Looking For ET 1:45

05 The First Meeting 2:07

06 Into The House 1:28

07 The Beginning Of A Friendship 2:52

08 Toys (tracked from ET Is Alive) 2:37

09 'I'm Keeping Him' 2:19

10 ET's Powers 2:43

11 Stuffed Animals 3:53

12 ET and Elliot Get Drunk 2:54

13 Frogs 2:10

14 Elliots First Kiss 0:28

15 Bedtime Stories 5:42

16 Halloween 2:54

17 Searching The House 2:14

18 ET's Machine 1:45

19 Michael's Search 4:14

20 Invading Elliot's House 2:46

21 ET Is Dying 2:20

22 Losing E.T. 2:03

23 ET Phones Home 4:03

24 The Rescue/The Bike Chase/The Departure 14:53

25 End Credits 3:55

This is great!

Very important this is archived in the best quality possible. I doubt we'll ever see a proper true release with the correct E.T. is Dying

Is anyone here in posession of a full cuesheet with slate numbers etc? It would be interesting to see if there is anything not yet accounted for.

Though as far as I know the only tracked music in the film is were Toys should be. (in the films it is tracked with E.T. Is Alive.)

Note 2: "Adventures On Earth" on the OST contains the wrong takes for the "Chase (11m3 The Bike Chase)" and "Saying Goodbye (11m4/12m1 The Departure)" sections.

Great job Stefan and thank you. Thanks to Jason for the great if a bit bewildering but meticulous cue list. :)

Now I am left wondering to what extent the version I just got is complete and/or has got doubled music.

There seems to be more alternates and less concert versions than on the above list.

And it's got "Abandoned and Pursued (Alt.)" but not a track named "Abandoned and Pursued".

There's plenty of fan-made boots with duplicated music cause they didn't know better.

Make your own complete release by combining the OST, 1996 CD, 2002 CD, and steef's isolated score using the guide I posted.

The sound on E.T. is Dying is very clear, you can hear a lot of orchestra background shuffle

Maybe that's why the track was not included on a c.d. release

Does the full score not fit on one CD? Or is it just another case of Williams being an ass and intentionally leaving certain cues off?

Well, Williams only arranged the original OST, which contained 5 concert arrangements and 5 film cues

The 1996 and 2002 releases were handled by Bouzerou, not Williams. With the 1996 version he left out a few cues and included the original versions of any cue that had a later insert written.

With the 2002 release, he included the main score cues he had forgotten (Bait For ET and Meeting ET) and mixed in the inserts for two of the cues (Searching For ET and End Credits) while still leaving out the inserts for 2 others (ET Is Dying and Saying Goodbye)

The Main Titles is a mystery, with no sheet music we don't really know what the deal is and why it's so similar to "Elliot Explores The Cornfield". They could both be different edits of the same single recording.

Also perhaps Elliot's First Kiss wasn't included because they didn't want to get the rights to The Quiet Man music.

Why they didn't include the inserts for ET Is Dying and Saying Goodbye I don't know. Lazyness?

Jason, weren't there two alternate inserts in the finale track?

No, there's only the one insert. All other differences on the OST version or Chase and Saying Goodbye are just due to them being the wrong takes selected.

The one I got came from a source that should be well-known to you...

Anyway, I don't have quite enough time or good enough editing skills to do this myself.

Nor am I familiar enough with the music. If I can't find a good edition for me to use, I'll just stick to the OST on this one.

It's news to me that the 1996/2002 versions are different from each other as well as being different from the film version (other than the missing Insert, of course).

What do you think the differences are?

Any one know if the "correct" version of Saying Goodbye has been released on any of the CD releases, or all they all alternates?

I thought the OST had the version with the insert, and 96/02 were the same, with the original version sans insert. I ended up editing the insert bit into the 02 version I think.

That is correct

Hmmm...just lined up the 1996 and 2002 version of Escape/Chase/Saying Goodbye

They don't match.

The 2002 version is 4 seconds shorter.

Yes; As I mentioned in my post, in the 1996 version "Chase" ends cleanly with "Saying Goodbye" starting after brief silence; On the 2002 release they are overlapped like in the film.

It's nice because it contains the Insert already mixed in, though the laserdisc version you just made does too which is also nice.

No, there's only the one insert. All other differences on the OST version of Chase and Saying Goodbye are just due to them being the wrong takes selected.

There are two sections that are different though, I can't remember what the other one is - but maybe it's only a slight difference and hence a different take then.

There are more than 2 sections different, but they are due to wrong takes being used on the OST, not due to additional written and recorded inserts.

Saying Goodbye:

1996 and 2002 seem the same

OST is very close to Film Version but has a horn blast when E.T. says "I'll be right here" (which is not in film version) . Is it different mixing of the same take?

Both Chase and Saying Goodbye used the wrong takes on the OST. There are many subtle differences.

I just want the famous version that John Williams conducted with the screen turned off!

I'm guessing it's the isolated score take

The isolated score take = the 1996/2002 take just with the Insert added.

The OST is the only alternate version here, people - and its only alternate because of different takes being used.

Allow me the pleasure of finding out tomorrow ;)

[laserdic only - Steef track "Stuffed Animals" (?:??-?:??)]

This tracktitle is a survivor from the first time the unreleased tracks leaked. Maybe King Mark came up with it.
