Joe will love that

Not really. I want Jessica back and Sarah Paulson. That might happen yet.

Girls 4x06 Close-Up

WTF? I thought with Hannah and Adam breaking up, we wouldn't have to see him any more. Now we have to watch him in his new relationship with Britta? WTF? That subplot was awful. As usual Shoshanna was the highlight, with another hilarious interview scene. Hannah and Marnie were insufferable (talk about pot calling the kettle black when they ganged up on Hannah for being selfish), and Jessa put in her usual useless cameo. This season is a wreck. Ray as a politician now?

Nobody makes me do anything

The problem with the show is that it's frustrating because it has moments of greatness, but then falls back on worn out ideas again for a while, then has another funny scene to keep you hooked. This season has been pretty uniformly bad, though. I probably would have stopped watching by now if Marcy wasn't into it. It's only 10 episodes a year, not a big commitment anyway.

Wolf Hall - the sixth (and final) episode. A brilliant conclusion to a brilliant series, one of the best I've ever seen. If I've one reservation about it, it's that the series is an adaptation of two novels from a planned trilogy (whose final installment has yet to be released), but, despite this, the programme has the feeling of a complete and self-contained story in which seeds planted in the first couple of episodes come to fruition at the end. Hopefully the BBC will produce an adaptation of the final novel after it comes out, with the same team.

Parks and Recreation 7x12-13 One Last Ride

Overall, a fantastic finale to a fantastic show. My only complaints are minor quibbles, nothing major bad here whatsoever.

Minor quibble #1: The entire season's lack of Ron's wife (Lucy Lawless). I've mentioned this throughout the season, it's really a mixed blessing they got Lucy Lawless to play her - she was great in the role and a great match for Ron, but her unavailability ultimate hurt the show more then helped it. Throughout this season there were so many weddings, funerals, and other social events that Ron's wife really should have been at, and to not be featured in the final episode's flashforwards is just a damn shame. I get that Lucy Lawless is busy on the other side of the world filming a show, but they should have just flown Nick Offerman out there and filmed some seasons in a house there - it'd be easy enough to say by 2017 and beyond they were living in a different house than before. Damn shame.

Minor quibble #2: The short amount of time Ann and Chris Trager got in the episode. Again, I get that both actors are super busy and all, but it would have been nice if more effort had been made to get them for a longer time to film more scenes. Instead of only appearing in the final get-together, they really should have been involved in a lot of the flashforwards, like Garry's funeral, Leslie's honorary degree, etc etc. Also they should have gotten their own flashforward showing what life together was like raising their kid, rather than just a throwaway line about them returning to Pawnee. Oh well.

But enough about that, how about the good. Well, this episode was essentially a riff on the great series finale of Six Feet Under, and that is not a bad thing. Flashforwards worked great there, and work great here. Each one was amusing in different ways. Donna and Joe - she was always a minor character really, but we barely knew Joe so seeing them together in Seattle was very nice. Jean-Ralphio and Mona Lisa - hilarious. Garry Gergich - Very heart warming and sweet. Though he was always put-down by everyone, in the end he was really well respected and loved. Him living to 100 (really 25 being a Feb 29 baby :) ) was a nice touch. Tom - failing at his restaurant business but writing a successful book about his failures was nice. I guess its nice he ended up with Lucy, though she was a bit underdeveloped as a character. April and Andy - the only one that maybe didn't ring true..... I kinda don't like that even them needed children to find happiness. American sitcoms really have a hard time with any characters not eventually having kids. As if adults can't be happy if they don't birth offspring. Oh well. Ron Swanson - this one was SO perfect! His character is the best one with the best development over 7 years. His admitting to Leslie why the falling out happened was such a great moment, and echoes of that are felt here. Him telling Leslie he didn't know what to do was handled so well, and her finding a federal government where he gets to run a park (that would never exist in real life Indiana, lol) was so sweet and nice. Awesome storyline (that only would have been better if his wife and children were shown). Ben and Leslie - also good. I loved the one last struggle we got to see, deciding which of them would run for Indiana governer. I like the ending they came up with - essentially Leslie finally agreeing to leave it all up to chance, which goes against every way she's been like for 7 years, and then Ben pulling the rug out and announcing she would be the one running. It just all made so much sense and fit so perfectly. It was a nice echo of Ben getting to a place where he could run for Mayor of Pawnee, and then realizing he didn't want to. I also loved the sly indication that at Garry's funeral, either him or Leslie are former President or Vice President(s). Awesome.

Overall, it was a very nice episode, a rewarding experience for anyone who has watched the entire show. If it lacked anything, though, it was comedy - it was really more of a heartfelt episode than a funny one.

After watching, I learned that NBC has put up a "Producer's cut" online, that is TEN MINUTES LONGER (!!), and reviewers are saying it's actually a big improvement. Essentially, we also get a flash forward to Jamm's future as well as Shauna Malwae-Tweep, but also apparently many more comedic moments are sprinkled in throughout. This sounds great, because as I said it was really more of a heart episode than a funny one, so perhaps the Producer's cut restores things to a proper balance. I guess the April Andy storyline makes more sense too. I plan to watch it soon.

House of Cards 3x01 Chapter 27

Wow - when I saw Michael Kelley's name in the opening credits, I was surprised, because I assumed they killed him off in the last episode of last season. Then I figured he would be shown in a couple flashbacks this episode and then that would be it. But he's back, baby! I'm glad he's alive, he's one of my favorite characters on the show. His recovery took up the bulk of the episode, which was interesting. It was actually a good way to show the progession of time that taken place since last season. I hope he doesn't have a full relapse :(

Not much else to say about the other storylines, because there wasn't much of them. The terrorist thing reminded me of watching Homeland. Claire wanting to run for UN Ambassador was nice, as was hints that she strives for further political aspirations beyond.

That's about it! Not a very compelling start to a new season of a show, but then again the Netflix model means they know you're gonna watch the next one anyway, so they can spread out their big moments as they see fit without worrying about keeping hooked.

The Fall 1x03 Insolence & Wine

This is basically two shows running simultaneously. The much weaker one is following the serial killer around as he is a shitty father, a questionable grief counselor, and a creepy creepy stalker of his next victim. This week he assembled manequins in a weird cabin he finds with his daughter, who also hinted to the mom about his hiding space above her bed (does he want to be caught?). I generally am not very intrigued by any of this guys scenes ever.

The other show, following Gillian Anderson around as she takes the lead in case to try to find the killer, is slowly getting better and more interesting. I've never been a fan (not that I've really ever watched any) shows that have a case a week like any L&O / CSI / NCIS / whatever, but I did get into some shows that spend an entire season on one case (The Killing, Twin Peaks, Dexter, Hannibal). I liked the montage of Gillian instructing everyone on the team, her assigning the redhead cop as her right hand man, and her psychological analysis of the killer. I also like the shooting of the cop she left with, and how it keeps bumping into the main killer case, despite not being directly related. At only 5 episodes this season, I'm on board to watch the final 2 no problems.

House of Cards 3x02 Chapter 28

OK, now we finally get a sense of the main driving storyline of the season - Frank telling the Dems he's not running and wants to focus on the America Works bill, then obviously running anyway, plus Claire trying to advance her political career through the UN. I was surprised when she didn't get the vote, but then the twist that she wants to try again was nice. At the very end - I assume she's pregnant, now? That's.... meh. I don't really understand stamper's bourbon medicine - is he using the syringes to measure an exact amount, or to treat it more like medicine than a return to drinking... or both? Jackie wanting to be Frank's VP is smart of her.

The Fall 1x04 My Adventurous Song

Watching the bad guy kill his next victim was just uncomfortable. The former partner of Olsen that shot himself was nutso. Interesting leads in the case this week, with a possible ex-girlfriend turning up with a botched strangling story, and the bad guy writing a letter to the father of the last victim, apologizing for her being pregnant. With one episode left this season, is Gillian going to catch the guy?

Saturday Night Live 40x14 Dakota Johnson / Alabama Shakes

Hmmm, I guess Alabama Shakes are a one hit wonder for me, didn't care for either of these songs. Dakota Johnson seems like a little bit of a talent, she was pretty good in all the sketches. Too bad the writers didn't come up with too many good ones this week. Almost all the pre-taped bits fell flat too, and I'm not sure how I feel about Riblet.

House of Cards 3x03 Chapter 29
The Russian president visits! Pretty funny episode all around. Love the Pussy Riot cameo, funny stuff. I guess Claire isn't pregnant at all, since she was drinking throughout the episode. I'm really glad Jimmi Simpsons' FBI hacker character is still on the show, he's good and good in this role. Interesting storyline going on now, with him agreeing to help Stamper find the hooker now that the FBI caught one of his contacts that had the AT&T info he stole.

Also: I had to look it up: The guy playing the Russian president is not only the brother of Mads Mikkelsen (NBC's Hannibal, Casino Royale), he was also Charles Augustus Magnussen on Sherlock season 3 and part of the original Dutch show that The Killing was a remake of

I recognized him instantly (Mikkelson that is). He was great as the Russian president throughout the season.

Modern Family 6x16 Connection Lost

This week Modern Family rised above the gimmick of doing an entire episode that takes place on Claire's laptop screen and delivered a solid episode that had every cast member involved. The writer's smartly set up the conflict early (Claire things Haley is pregnant and ran off to Vegas to marry Andy), which keeps the tension up the whole time and makes you almost forget about the gimmick. They did well to integrate FaceTime, iMessage, iPhoto, and iTunes into things, and even featured a surprise return of Dylan. Funny stuff throughout as well, a great episode!

You've already watched the whole season? It just came out on Friday!

I tried to take it slow, I swear! But it was too hard to resist the binge-watching...

We had a free weekend. Spent the day with some friends watching the season. Not a big deal really.

It's not like it's a regular thing. It may surprise you, but I actually don't have time to dedicate 13 hours to television every week you know...

It was supposed to be a "study session" actually, but somehow turned into a House of Cards party...

I signed us up for a free month of Netflix on Friday in order to watch House of Cards, and I have to say it: Netflix is pretty awesome.

I had netflix from 2000 through 2012, but used it pretty much exclusively for their disc service, which was awesome, and how I finally saw a lot of classic movies I had never seen, not to mention a great amount of independent and foreign films. When they launched their streaming service I wasn't that impressed, mostly because the only thing I had that could use it was my Wii, which didn't do HD. I'd rather have them mail me a Blu ray I can watch in 1080p & 7.1 sound than a 480p stream that looks worse than a DVD.

But now that we have an Amazon Fire Stick (not to mention a WD Live box), I have to say things are much better than my prior experience. We have Amazon Prime streaming too, which is good, but the problem is selection - we've only been able to find a handful of movies that we hadn't already seen that we were actually interested in, and no TV shows we wanted to watch that we hadn't seen. Netflix though, the selection is SO MUCH Better than Amazon's. We've already watched not only House of Cards and The Fall on it, but Marcy found of bunch of shows she wanted to watch - stuff like House Hunters and other HGTV shows that she hasn't seen since we canceled our cable subscription a few years back.

And the quality of the stream is ace, now. Perfect HD quality. A few times it dipped down to standard def when there was a network hiccup (I assume), but it came back to full HD very soon. Unfortunately my HDTV doesn't pass 5.1 through from the HDMI input to my receiver, so if we watch on the Amazon Firestick we only get stereo sound, but if we watch through the WD box we get full 5.1 when streaming which is great.

TL;DR: Netflix is awesome, a steal at $8/month. Quite a large selection, available to stream in nice high definition / surround sound quality!

The selection at the Canadian Netflix sucks though. You rarely get to watch what you want to. Apparently most of us here just steal the American Netflix, but I have no idea how to do that.

The big problem with Netflix is that if you aren't watching a Netflix Original show, you're always going to be a season behind, which is the same problem with Amazon Prime.

Apparently you can stream the latest episodes of all the network shows on Hulu Plus, but I hear those still have commercials, so then what are you paying for?

There was no chance it could be. It was always going to be more fun watching Frank try to get what he wants than actually having it.
