It seems they were not pleased with Returns, and want to do a reboot.

Will this mean we can kiss Williams' heroic march goodbye forever?

Or will they not be able to sepparate it from Superman?

We were talking about it here already, but I'll allow a seperate thread. These things do tend to get snowed under in the Last Movie thread.

As much as I love the Superman theme, I think maybe they should try something new. I mean, Returns was so busy being a tribute to the 1978 movie that it couldn't even be its own.

So Singer's out?

Yep, kiss good by to Williams. Expect a Dark Knight 'inspired' score.

while the nolan film have serviceable scores, Superman needs a heroic march or fanfare.

I pity the poor composer that gets into the shoes to compose a new Superman march...

Why?

Superman excisted for over 50 years in print, film and TV before Williams composed his score for a single film.

I would like to see Zimmer get destroyed.
OH God, Joe is posting again, someone hand me my pills!

"You're not John Conner, I saw you die, said Kyle". "I was only injured, replied John". "No, your injuries were too severe, you died. Look at you, where are your injuries? You're, you're a Terminator." "Kyle, its still me, yes my body was beyond repair, but my essence is here." He points to his head. "No John". Kyle raised his pulse rifle and aimed it at John but before he could fire, John fired first. Knocked to the ground Kyle looked up at the Terminator in the form of the man he once idolized. All hope was lost. "If you kill me how will you ever be born?" "Thats a good question Kyle, all this time we've focus on Sarah, on John, when had we known the it was you we should have targeted all along." John pointed his rifle at Kyle's face. "The resistance is finished, the battle is won. We the machines are the victors, salvation is ours." Kyle never heard the second shot.

I'll be honest. I'd prefer a fresh, original Superman without the march than another Singer version with Williams' themes.

There can be a reboot that still uses the theme. No complaint from me if they throw the whole love child thing into the circular file.

Problem is that The Dark Knight is now the template for the successful comic book hero movie and its sadistic violence and relentless gloom coupled with incomprehensible and stupefying action all mean that the mass audience probably won't embrace a Superman movie which is produced with the mood it should have. And if they try to make it like Dark Knight, then it won't really be a Superman movie (and it won't use the Williams theme).

Yeah, it's hard to imagine such a realistic treatment of Superman. My guess is they'll completely foul it up: a tastelessly dark, pretentious film filled with gratuitous violence and pulsating string beats. Don't get me wrong, I love The Dark Knight, but you can't do that to Superman. There's no way.

That can be done, I think. Not by changing the main character, only everything around him. Tricky but possible.

Karol
From a storytelling point of view, from a directing point of view, there is one thing I associate with what he does, which is calm. There is such an inherent calm and inherent trust of the one powerful image, that he makes me embarrassed with my own work, in terms of how many different shots, how many different sound effects, how many different things we’ll throw at an audience to make an impression. But with Kubrick, there is such a great trust of the one correct image to calmly explain something to audience. There can be some slowness to the editing. There’s nothing frenetic about it. It’s very simple. There’s a trust in simple storytelling and simple image making that actually takes massive confidence to try and emulate. - Christopher Nolan

I'd argue that Williams' music was effective in more places than just the credits. I remember feeling absolutely exhilarated as Routh's Superman stood, braced between the passenger jet and the shuttle, to the stirring heroics of JW's original compositions. People seem quick to forget that all the best moments in SR were accompanied by JW's music.

I don't really care about Superman, or any other comic book heroes for that matter. Batman was the only one I grew up with. I saw Forever like 15 times in the theater when I was a kid.

Oh thank god, that means that Singer won't return. And we are getting a third Batman film.

It cracks me up that they spent close to 10 years trying to get a new Superman film made and they churn out a clunker. Now they want to re-boot it. ROTFLMAO

Any sane person who watched the first two X-Men films and actually believed Singer was capapble of delivering an entertaining superhero film should be slapped with a large trout.

We'll get a re-boot now with a lame power anthem for Superman's theme.

I think this is the best thing that could happen with Superman, since SR was a mess of a film.

Although it may be a balant rip off of TDK.

Why?

Superman excisted for over 50 years in print, film and TV before Williams composed his score for a single film.

What about the famous theme song: "It's a bird...it's a plane...no, it's Superman!"

I can hear Zimmer right now: "See, I didn't want to write such a happy jolly theme like John Williams', it would be just wrong for our movie! I didn't feel like Superman really earned a theme until the end of the film. Clark doesn't know who he is yet, so a theme would be too restricting for him."

"You know, it was originall two notes, but it was just too much. Lex Luthor doesn't develop, he is the same the first time we see him to the last time we see him. It took me two months to get this one note right, and it almost broke my head. I really think hard about these things. Personally I'm happy with this. I didn't exactly hate Superman Returns, but it did have a bucket-load of flaws. I'm more concerned about what director signs on for the project than if it will be a rip-off of The Dark Knight. Granted Superman is not really a character that can be taken in that direction, but with the right talent behind it it could be something good and different.
Do you like John Williams? His early work was a little too jazzy for my taste, but when Jaws came out in '75 I really think he came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and an air of consummate professionalism that really gives the pieces a big boost. He's been compared to Jerry Goldsmith but I think John has a far more leitmotif-driven style of composing. In '82 John composed this, E.T., his most accomplished album to date. I think his undisputed masterpiece is "The Magic of Halloween", a theme so catchy most people don't listen to what it means. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of childhood and the importance of friendship, it's also a personal statement about the man himself. Hey Paul!

This whole situation is too bad for Brandon Routh, I think he did a very nice job considering the shoes he had to fill. I would have liked to have seen him play the character more. I still enjoy Superman Returns, it's far from flawless but I didn't think it was awful.

My first reaction to anything that attempts to step on, alter, or change in any way the Superman mythos set up in the greatest comic book movie ever made is to hate it with a firey passion. Irrationally and unequivocally.
