I'm hoping for a treasure trove of unreleased music more than a repackaging of older LPs that duplicate or triplicate the album content, albeit in condensed LP arrangement form. It's a great score and probably worth it, but still.
I suggest a full frontal assault with automated laser monkeys, scalpel mines, and acid.

All the LPs are unique, even the repeated content. There is definitely a lot of unreleased music that many of us have never heard. The complete score presentation should be a revelation as well - in some ways the assembly of the Rhino presentation is worse than the TPM Ultimate Edition!

It's funny when people can guess certain things and they end up being right.

Anyways regarding the price tag for Ben Hurr it's actually a good price over all. Take the $60 price tag, divide it by 5 and it comes out to about $12 per CD. All though what makes it that expensive is producing the box set and such for the release.

How is that exactly? I own the set, but can't say I know the score by heart.

From a storytelling point of view, from a directing point of view, there is one thing I associate with what he does, which is calm. There is such an inherent calm and inherent trust of the one powerful image, that he makes me embarrassed with my own work, in terms of how many different shots, how many different sound effects, how many different things we’ll throw at an audience to make an impression. But with Kubrick, there is such a great trust of the one correct image to calmly explain something to audience. There can be some slowness to the editing. There’s nothing frenetic about it. It’s very simple. There’s a trust in simple storytelling and simple image making that actually takes massive confidence to try and emulate. - Christopher Nolan

Same here. It's a great score which I rarely listen to these days. Always been perfectly happy with the Rhino set, but I guess I'll have no choice but to pick this up.

There are some edits in the Rhino version that make it closer to an isolated score track rather than a comprehensive release.

There are also odd instances, such as the "Prince of Peace" track where the film version and the alternate are both edited into the film sequence. Weird stuff.

I am now thinking if I should get the Miklós Rózsa Treasury. I mean, looks like I already have (or going to have) all the music I want from this set, in more complete form. I have the FSM Knight of the Round Table, Lust for Live, The Power, Rhino's King of King, Tadlow's EL CID.
Intrada's Ivanhoe is not limited and I am going to buy it. The onlt thing interest me is Quo Vadis. But Tadlow is going to re-record it.

I don't know if I should pay that much for the rest less interest score. Or should I save money for this Ben Hur set?

I don't care when it was composed as long as it has a musical hook.

Are you trying to tell us something?

OH MY GOD! It's Hook complete score (2CDs) + Hook - The Musical (3CDs)!!

I'm going to faint.

I was just thinking that myself! LOL.
Hopefully I will hit 2,000 posts before 12/21/12.

North by Northwest has been suggested at FSM.

I have the current Sony release, and it has some serious sound issues for some cues. I'd certainly be interested if they've found a better source.

The sound issues were due to deterioration of the original storage medium.

They may have had to bake them to play them back, and if so, they may be unplayable now.

I believe there is something in the liner notes about this.

You mean the Rhino release? Yes, it is a bit disappointing and, from what I remember, the whole final sequence is a film edit.

Ah well, at least there is Varese Sarabande re-recording.

The iso score on the DVD didn't have those problems. Don't recall if the Blu carried over the iso?

Anyway, at least the film edits should be available in isolated, undamaged form.

The final four FSM CDs are coming—look for #247 in June. We'll probably hit #250 in late summer.

In the meantime, here's a little FSM freebie offer you might enjoy at Screen Archives:

Buy any $50 (not including postage) of FSM CDs and get FREE your pick of ONE the following:

1. All Fall Down/The Outrage
2. Crossed Swords
3. Eye of the Devil (MY personal favorite of this list!)
4. Home From the Hill
5. Maurice Jarre: Concert Works
6. Never So Few/7 Women
7. Ride Vaquero/The Outriders
8. The Ice Pirates
9. The Prisoner of Zenda
10. The Swan
11. Prophecy

Buy $100+ and get two choices, etc.—but NO substitutions. Ask for your freebie in the "notes" field in the SAE check-out process.
Offer good until end of business day (E.S.T.) Tuesday, May 15th.

FSM CD #248 is almost done and we expect it to be available in mid to late July, a 2CD set. There are only three FSM titles left before we shut the label down and this one will be of great interest, I am sure! (That's not a hint, it's a fact!)
In the meantime, here is a special offer effective today until we say otherwise:
Buy $50 worth of FSM CDs (pre-shipping charges) and get a free gift of one of following 3CD sets:

The Americanization of Emily/The Sandpiper/Drums of Africa—three gorgeous Johnny Mandel scores, so beautiful!

Dr. Kildare—a whole disc of stunning early Goldsmith television music, plus music by Sukman, Stevens, Schifrin, Green, Kaper and others. LIMITED QUANTITIES FOR THIS OFFER! We may pull it back at any time!
Kenner/More Than a Miracle—by the late, great Piero Piccioni.
Northwest Passage—3CD westerns collection with the oft-requested Herbert Stothart score to Northwest Passage plus rare M-G-M scores by Cyril Mockridge, Harry Sukman and David Shire.
The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.—an exhaustive archive of music to the Dr. Seuss cult classic.
To use this special offer, order as usual and if your order qualifies, request your free gift in the “notes” field during the SAE check-out process. (Order $100 of FSM CDs and get two free gifts, $150 and pick three, etc.)
Please, no substitutions or special requests—these freebie offers have to be processed manually by SAE and I have to talk them into this kind of special offer because of the work it generates.
Trying to decide which FSM titles to buy? Here’s a list of the CDs with low stocks (quantities of fewer than 150 remaining):
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Moross) 137
The Appointment (Legrand/Barry/Phillips) 137
The Egyptian (Newman/Herrmann) 51 ($4.95 sale!)
Farewell My Lovely/Monkey Shines (Shire) 117 - with greatest theme ever written for Charlotte Rampling
Grand Prix (Jarre) 144
Green Mansions (Kaper/Villa-Lobos) 102
A Guide for the Married Man (Williams) 145 - insane Johnny Williams comedy score
Lord Jim/The Long Ships (Kaper/Radic) 148
Lust for Life (Rózsa) 129
Moonfleet (Rózsa) 78 - Rózsa does "Greensleeves," gorgeous!
Two Weeks in Another Town (Raksin) 13 (!!)
The Yakuza (Grusin) 29 (!) - when it's OOP soon, you'll have to cut off a finger to find it...
