MV called this release lazy on FSM.
I wouldn't be surprised if he said that. I said on FSM these releases with out expansions is rather pointless and stupid. I mean ya it's great for those who missed out on the first time but with no expansion ...just pure lazy and LAME. This is why I wish Varèse didn't have a lot 80's and 90's titles in perpetuity. If they didn't it would give labels like LLL and Intrada to release expanded/complete versions of said scores.
I know MV has stated he wants to release the complete versions for The Abyss and Volcano but can't because Varèse has the rights in perpetuity.

I wonder if they will do OOP Club releases, like The Fury.
Oh, that would be awesome, I somehow managed to missThe Fury and have wanted it for years ...

Human aggression is instinctual. Humans have not evolved any ritualised aggression-inhibiting mechanisms to ensure the survival of the species. For this reason man is considered a very dangerous animal.

I thought Chinatown was Varese's original catalogue title. But I guess I was wrong.
Koray is right--Chinatown is not part of the Encore series. The three Encore reissues here are all Varèse's own original catalogue titles .
And they released just the OST album again with improved sound as a limited edition. Is there much music to add to Chinatown album anyway? I seem to remember very little music in the film itself, only in key scenes, not much beyond the 30 minutes on the OST.
How about the rejected score? It's been done before...

Ars superior est vita hominum.
"We pop out and come into the world and music is there. We didn't invent it - it's all organised in the atmosphere by divinity or whatever. It's a miracle." - John Williams-
I think music is a stream of some kind. It could be blood. It could be water. It could be ether. Whatever it is it seems to be a living, organic force that’s in motion, that serves humanity and is part of humanity and part of what describes us as humans. We sing, play, dance, all the things that we do. And there is a vibrant and great literature we have been given. ... As musicians, we join the stream. We swim in the stream with all the other millions of music makers. It’s a life force, a strong one, surrounding us and we are part of it. -John Williams-

John Williams sucks, he doesn't write with a quill pen, there is no emotion in pencil music ! Purcell is the man !Among all the things I have done in my short and pitiful life, becoming an inside joke on JWFAN is the one I'm the least proud of.

Speaking of Varese, I had a dream Incanus sent me a copy of Dracula in the mail, not sure whether it was expanded, encore, or not...

Speaking of Varese, I had a dream Incanus sent me a copy of Dracula in the mail, not sure whether it was expanded, encore, or not...It had an extra track, a disco version of the Dracula theme on it of course. And obviously I can afford to be quite generous in dreams. What would you like me to send in your next dream? The sky's the limit! Spared no expense. Nothing's too good for my dream buddies.

"You're not John Conner, I saw you die, said Kyle". "I was only injured, replied John". "No, your injuries were too severe, you died. Look at you, where are your injuries? You're, you're a Terminator." "Kyle, its still me, yes my body was beyond repair, but my essence is here." He points to his head. "No John". Kyle raised his pulse rifle and aimed it at John but before he could fire, John fired first. Knocked to the ground Kyle looked up at the Terminator in the form of the man he once idolized. All hope was lost. "If you kill me how will you ever be born?" "Thats a good question Kyle, all this time we've focus on Sarah, on John, when had we known the it was you we should have targeted all along." John pointed his rifle at Kyle's face. "The resistance is finished, the battle is won. We the machines are the victors, salvation is ours." Kyle never heard the second shot.

"Let me say, however, there is no "next" John Williams. Sadly, he is unique--- a figure who simultaneously embodies and transcends the music of all the masters of film music who preceded him (much like Brahms and Wagner of the Romantic era). He comes from a time when the craft of music in film was still one of the ear, heart and mind. Today, sadly, the craft is largely technical. Most composers do not conceive their music "inwardly" but rather at the computer--- and with rather limited skills, musically, at that. The inner spirit knows no boundaries--- our plastic abilities, sadly, do. John is a man of spirit, heart, intellect and soaring music." -- Conrad Pope about John Williams

I am pretty sure Karate Kid 4 is coming. Grap this one and I can finally have all 4 scores.
Ya that seems like it's a given. I bought the box set when it was first released. I'm glad though that they finally released them separately for those who missed out on the run of the box set.

Here's a full list

Interesting to look at the list, from '08-'10 they regularly released tons of titles every quarter. Then all of a sudden in '11 and '12 they really just petered out

Though I downloaded the Chinatown OST from Amazon since then, which is identical to the VCL release, though I consider that a technicality.
I hope they release something I want. Varese has largely been irrelevant for a number of months in regards to releases that I want.

Without them say goodbye to the contemporary soundtrack release.Frankly the most productive thing Varese can do these days is sell off some of their perpetual rights.

In fact, your point strengthens my argument - allowing other labels to expand their older (90s) material gives them more resources to release lots of current releases. Everyone wins!

Wonder how they'll handle Star Trek Into Darkness.
Deliberately remove the choral tracks from their soundtrack to gleefully earn the disdain of purists worldwide.
