Potterdom Film/Score Series Thread

Okay, if this is correct, the alleged track titles of the CD would also be correct, since they are directly derived from this list (apparently). The cue list seems quite helpful to determine what the CD track titles refer to... and what bits are unscored/omitted from the CD. Most interesting are the last 3 cues - marked with (J. W.). This clearly refers to John Williams... so did he write these, to end the saga? Or do the cues contain his themes (that would be a pity - only 3 tracks with Williams' material (actually apparently less - patch/pickup))? Is Desplat known to have such haphazard cue titles (in poor English)?

Yeah, the track list I posted is real. A Harry Potter fansite apparently confirmed it with Warner Bros: http://www.snitchseeker.com/harry-potter-news/confirmed-deathly-hallows-part-ii-original-soundtrack-track-list-and-timings-82216/

Also that cue list, could the cues with JW next to them be tracked music from earlier films? "Boys Receive Detention" sounds like something from film 1 or 2, and I don't see how that title could fit in this film at all, even in a metaphorical sense...

Thanks very much for that cue list, Phoenix! You wouldn't happen to have one for Part 1 too, would you?

Sure, I'll sort it out for you.

9M2 – OPENING – DUMBLEDORE & HARRY (J.W.)

9M2 – (patch) LEAVING HOGWARTS (J.W.)

9M2 – (pickup) LEAVING HOWARTS (J.W.)

If this is an accurate cue listing, I will be very pleased to hear Leaving Hogwarts during the 19 Years Later epilogue - I think it would fit perfectly. Incidentally, what would Dumbledore & Harry be tracked from? I'm not familiar with cue titles.

I think you're right that it must be tracked from earlier films. Although the title doesn't fit movie 8, there is a part in the book where Harry is caught by a couple of Death Eater staff in the castle, which would fit metaphorically with earlier detention music.

So Williams might actually have returned... just not the way we were all hoping for ;-)

I just checked the on the 2M6 'Boys Recieve Detention'cue - it is the cue from Chamber of Secrets which they've used. I presume they may have re-recorded it as it has been re-prepared and titled as a HP7 Pt 2 cue.

The 3 x 9m2 cues are all shortish cues that have also been re-prepared (2 of them orchestrated by Conrad Pope, the other just noted as John Williams).

Hmmm... I wonder which part of the movie exactly in COS that the "boys receive detention" is from? I remember Harry having detention with Lockhart, but that's it. And I wonder why that cue... hmm...

Also just checked '9m2 - Dumbledore and Harry' - is also from Chamber of Secrets (same cue number and title) - so it looks like exact cues have just been used.

Totes called it! I've been saying "Leaving Hogwarts" would work perfectly ever since I read the book.

It could be when McGonnagal gives them detention for crashing the car into the Whomping Willow.

Thanks Phoenix.

I have a few questions:

- not entirely sure if I understood correctly: are these 4 cues tracked from Chamber of Secrets, or have they been rerecorded by Desplat? I'd be somewhat disappointed if the finale contained tracked music - hoping for a rerecording myself!

- what does 'patch' and 'pickup' mean?

- about the HP 7.1 cuelist: I can't seem to find the source cue "My Love Is Always Here" (that was in the Deluxe package) on it - have I overlooked it?

Tracking music into the Harry Potter finale ...

I mean, people, I was prepared for a lot, but taking some, pardon me, secondary cues from Chamber Of Secrets and plastering them onto there, that leaves me just amazed in the most negative way.

I can understand a certain metaphor when "Leaving Hogwarts" is used, but the rest?

While they're re-recording stuff for DH Part 2, why don't they just bring William Ross on board for adapting and get it over with?

Maybe Williams didn't want to and this was their next best option?

I just wanted to ignite some false hope so I can later watch how a couple hundred of people in this world (who actually care) get disappointed. I am a bad person indeed. ;)

I actually expected no Williams material in part 2, except for Hedwigs Theme in the epilogue, and actually thought this would be the worst possible way to end the series.

Never in my dreams did I think both Yates and Desplat would resort to cheap tracking. I mean, I am a Williams fan, I want Williams music in the Harry Potter finale, but I am first and foremost a film music fan.

And as a film music fan, I have to shout: if you rat b*stards won't bring original Williams music, or use Williams' themes in the film, at least have the decency to try and come up with some awesome original music instead of using the cheapest sort of tracking!

WTF are they thinking? Shades of George Lucas?

NEW TRAILER. OH MY GOODNESSSSSSSSS.

"Pickup" is, as I understand, an unplanned recording that was decided upon.

"Patch" probably means the Celeste patch used for the Leaving Hogwarts recording.

Hey, man, it's not tracking, it's new recordings. Would you fault Williams for using the same main title music in every Star Wars? I think a glorious reprise of "Leaving Hogwarts" will jerk the tears better than any original piece. Bring it all back, remind us of our childhoods. Even if they were directed by Chris Columbus.

Also, 9m2 "Opening"? Is this perhaps Hedwig's theme, just played straight? I ALSO imagined that for Harry and Dumbledore's talk. Shit, my musical instincts are right on.

No.

But I would fault Williams if he intentionally used the pod race music for the Corouscant chase, which is the fitting comparison.

Yates is doing exactly what Lucas gets hell for (rightfully so).

I must say the trailer is terrific.

The scene of the Quidditch field burning is shocking. The scene of the Lily talking to Harry is touching.

If there is one constant is how annoying Voldemort's constant screaming.

But in this case there are so many parallels between the scenes. Think of it more as the sunset shot at the end of Episode III scored with "Binary Sunset." Familiar, but fitting. (And yes, I know Williams reharmonized one note. Whatever.) And really, do you think the entire 2 something minutes of "Leaving Hogwarts," precise sync points and all, will be used? You have to figure Desplat's done some adaptation.

Now why would you have to go and say something rational like that? You're going to ruin it for all the conspiracy theorists out there.

No, I don't think Desplat has done some adaption.

I think it will be a direct re-recording of the Williams pieces, just stuck on top of scenes. And it's not mainly the Leaving Hogwarts piece, but the CoS cues. I can understand why you would use one piece as a look back, but why the hell that much tracking?

I haven't been to the scoring sessions, nor have I seen the film. At this point it's just cue sheet, which doesn't quite confirm anything to me. So I'll wait til the release to start criticizing stuff like that.

You mean, like, 4 minutes out of a 2 hour movie? Shit's out of control! Lazy tracking everywhere! The death of original music!

I don't understand that "Boys Receive Detention" thing, but I like it just for the sheer randomness. Are they paying homage to the scene in Snape's office in CoS? Who remembers that, seriously? Whatever, I bet Desplat's doing something clever with it.

The John Williams music is [intended] to be played over the flashback montage of the youngins Hogwarts experience. Not new footage.

If I was a composer, I'd take Williams' style and hint at that by writing in the same style, not taking a direct quote.

I hate it when films make

flashbacks, and use the same score from the same scene

. It feels out of place, like someone

didn't bother to write new music for it

.

Especially when it's embedded in a style that's completely different.

Pardon me for thinking about crucial artistic decisions in the finale of one of the most important film series JW, or anyone, has ever scored.

I apparently made the error of thinking I was on a film music board.

No, seriously, I thank you. I was honestly interested to see this film, and now I'm honestly not. I'm not being sarcastic one bit. I think it's a bit pathetic that since John Williams is unavailable to score this most important film in the history of David Thewlis' career, using Williams music to cut and paste is just plain rude, disrespectful, and shameful.

See? Nobody cares.

And to break off this quotefest I ask: Have we heard any of the new score yet? Do we have any idea how the possible JW material is handled? And why so serious and negative about it? Did the Part 1 score sour all hopes for some of us to have a good finale for the series?
