Maurizio 6,913 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 I was googling in serch of pictures of Williams and Goldsmith for an article I have to write for my website and I happened to find some really groovy photos on Joey Newman's website (part of the Newmans Family, grandson of Lionel Newman). Check out some of them:(Lionel Newman and John Williams--early 70s I guess! )(Lionel Newman and Jerry Goldsmith on the stage)(The Star Wars scoring gang at Anvil Denham)(Alfred Newman conducts)(Randy Newman and uncle Lionel)(comic strip from Return of the Jedi spotting sessions--LOL )Check out other nice pics here: http://www.joeynewman.com/index.php/gallery/category/C4/
Xander Harris 9,675 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Another one of Williams smoking a cigar.
Maurizio 6,913 Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 You know what's really cool about seeing these pictures? It really seems those people were having a lot of fun while working, despite the pressure and the stress of studio life. It was really another time.
Andy 7,730 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 What are Lionel and Jerry wearing? Were they doing an Asian themed score?
Quintus 6,496 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 I've never seen Williams with hair like that.
Andy 7,730 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 I've never seen Williams with hair like that.Yeah... wotta hippie. I never knew he smoked cigars, either. Look at that, two of the photos have him smoking. Hope that didn't take days off his life.Great pics!
Maurizio 6,913 Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 I've never seen Williams with hair like that.I guess it was when he wrote those funky charts for Cinderella Liberty
Romão 2,473 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 He did not get divorced, his wife passed away
indy4 160 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Wow that first one is great. It doesn't look like 70s Williams, maybe 60s or even late 50s. I'm not sure when he started working with Lionel Newman.
pixie_twinkle 60 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 That first picture is not 50s. My guess is 1970.
Red 75 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 When did Williams start losing his hair exactly? I don't think I've seen a picture of him with a full head of hair.
Maurizio 6,913 Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 When did Williams start losing his hair exactly? I don't think I've seen a picture of him with a full head of hair. When he was still quite young, I guess:http://mahawa.jw-music.net/early/photos.htm
Datameister 2,586 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 It's crazy how different he's looked at different points in his life. I mean...I guess everyone's appearance changes over time, but some people change more than others. With his changing hair styles (on his scalp and face) and changes in weight and just general aging, he's really had a wide variety of appearances.
Xander Harris 9,675 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 The only time I thought JW looked different was the A.I. featurette. I think maybe he just shaved or something, but he looked like he had reversed age a few years.
Maxxie 1 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Long hair, Barbossa wannabe beard, cigar.......... BUT NO BLACK TURTLENECK!
Ollie 1,375 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 There's a picture of Williams, in one of the booklets, from one of his early scores released by FSM wearing his black turtle neck in the late 60's / early 70's with more hair.
Luke Skywalker 2,384 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 is the comic strip about 'ghost writting' ROTJ??
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Looks like he started losing his hair in his 30s. That sucks!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,386 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 No, women are atracted to it.
Red 75 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 It was a way to make up for his otherwise intolerable amount of talent.
Quintus 6,496 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 No, women are atracted to it.Only when the dude has a muscular, manly cranium See: Jason Statham.
Andy 7,730 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Looks like he started losing his hair in his 30s. That sucks!I'm 38 and it's starting. Two years ago, I had a thick head of hair and you'd never have suspected I'd loose any of it. Then all of a sudden... Oh Crap!!!It does indeed suck.
Datameister 2,586 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Hey, not even Williams could top Patrick Stewart.
Quintus 6,496 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Bah! Yul Brynner is the baldy badass to end 'em all.
Olivier 5 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Great pictures. Nice collection of pictures you linked to, also. Thanks, Maurizio !
Thor 9,362 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Geezezm, IU'm drunk. Do you have a separate thraed for drinking and having a good time?
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Perhaps a search for "keyboard malfunction" could help.
Josh500 1,620 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Haha, these pics are great, especially the first one!http://mahawa.jw-music.net/early/photos.htmNow, is it me, or when JW was a little kid, wasn't he the spitting image of Timmy from Jurassic Park?
Naïve Old Fart 13,023 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Are they? Good. There's hope for me, yet.
Jacob 1 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Geezezm, IU'm drunk. Do you have a separate thraed for drinking and having a good time?
Incanus 5,890 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Another great find Maurizio! Funny and delightful stuff and it is almost a shock to see Johnny with that kind of hair-do and with so much hair. Jerry Goldsmith and Lionel Newman in Chinese style outfits is intriguing. Does anyone know what score are they recording in that picture? The ROTJ spotting sessions cartoon is brilliant!
chuck 155 Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Got some new finds:I might have a dirty mind but I think Lionel's holding a d**ck in his napkin...
chuck 155 Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Jerry Goldsmith and Lionel Newman in Chinese style outfits is intriguing. Does anyone know what score are they recording in that picture? It's a very late answer to your question but it's from the film "The Sand Pebbles".
Thor 9,362 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Yeah, classic picture that I've seen a few times.I believe the guy standing behind them is Doug Fake and the guy on the far right is Laurence Rosenthal. But I have no idea who the woman is, or the guy to the far left.
chuck 155 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I wonder does Morricone know how to converse in English, or is that woman his interpreter?
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,386 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I've never heard him speak in English.
chuck 155 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Neither have I heard Williams speak Italian. Hlao-roo 1
WilliamsStarShip2282 327 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I've never seen Williams with hair like that.Yeah... wotta hippie. I never knew he smoked cigars, either. Look at that, two of the photos have him smoking. Hope that didn't take days off his life.Great pics!i actually think there are a few pics out there where hes got an ash tray on his desk, and theres also one of him during the recording sessions for his flute and violin concerto, smoking a cigar.
chuck 155 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 This is one of my favorite: as a young man it's my regret I haven't experienced anticipating a new JG score.
