Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Amusing film by the director of Harry Potter & The Philosophers Stone and Adventures in Babysitting. This film is a sort of mix of both these earlier efforts.
Rather a clever story with some nice nods to Greek mythology, obvious but fun special effects, cool cameo's and a nice zippy pace. Perfect Sunday night entertainment

The Horse Whisperer - 7.2/10

Intouchables - 8.6/10 - such a wonderful feel-good film. afterwards we put on earth, wind & fire on the highest volume and danced till we were all sweaty lol. based on a true story too. I highly recommend it.

On the one hand, I feel this is very well done. On the other hand, with the narrative jumping back and forth in time, the countless names, faces and dates, (you know, typical spy stuff) made it too confusing for me to be involved. Maybe I need to see this again to fully appreciate it. The music of Iglesias is one of the more interesting scores I've heard in a long time. Must check it out. 5/10

Sounds like a film for me. I've been interested for a while. I like Alfredson's previous film (it's all I've seen from him).

Alex seems to hate plots.

In this case, I have to disagree. This particular film needs to be convoluted. I couldn't exactly follow the story. But it seems to be all about confusion and certain paranoia anyway...

From a storytelling point of view, from a directing point of view, there is one thing I associate with what he does, which is calm. There is such an inherent calm and inherent trust of the one powerful image, that he makes me embarrassed with my own work, in terms of how many different shots, how many different sound effects, how many different things we’ll throw at an audience to make an impression. But with Kubrick, there is such a great trust of the one correct image to calmly explain something to audience. There can be some slowness to the editing. There’s nothing frenetic about it. It’s very simple. There’s a trust in simple storytelling and simple image making that actually takes massive confidence to try and emulate. - Christopher Nolan

Chris Nolan plots irritate me most. Convoluted and aggrandized to cover up the wafer thin filmic substance, I wish he'd give it a rest.

I watched Raging Bull last night. Its been a while since I sat through a good ol' Scorecese film. One of the man's best. A fascinating character study and De Niro's is mesmerizing.

Mulan

Still holds up really, really well. The songs are okay, but Jerry Goldsmith's score really elevates the film. Animation is still really good, and Eddie Murphy's Mushu is much less grating than his Donkey in the Shrek movies.

If people think it's complicated and they love it for it (a so-called thinking man's action sci-fi movie), then who are we to say it's simple as Sesame Street? Anyway, it's true. Inception does have a complex plot. However, I would've preferred it the other way around, a simple plot but a complex movie.

You all should watch this lecture on Inception if you have the time. It offers a VERY interesting interpretation of the plot and message (although for all the stuff on the philosophy you have to get the book). Some of this stuff blew my mind. Although I saw the movie again recently and I'm not sure everything holds water.

The way I see it, Inception doesn't aim for a "deep" plot on the character side, but tries to be entertainingly complex by having a tricky plot architecture. And as such, I thought it did quite well.

By the way, is it really how you pronounce complicated? With "ca" as "key"? Sounds rather fishy to me.

Definitely watchable, but I really wanted to love this movie. Starts off very promising, but then meanders a bit. Then basically gets derailed at the end. The characters just aren't fleshed out enough and the action scenes aren't spectacular enough to overlook that The Cate Blanchett character and the three minor villains are cardboard cut-outs an there's nothing all that interesting about them. I really wanted to know more about Hanna (Saoirse Ronan). There's just enough of her to maintain interest.

I caught most of it on TV a little whiles back and really enjoyed it more than I expected. I missed most of the set up I think, but I really dug the action and score.

True that, but like I said, I was hoping for the opposite. Then again, I do tend to lean towards slow atmospheric movies that make me truly feel what they are showing. Inception went through the landscape like a high speed train, as if going fast was way more important than the journey itself.

Inception is overrated claptrap. IMHO, it's another overly praised underwhelming effort from Nolan who excels at underwhelming.
OH God, Joe is posting again, someone hand me my pills!

"You're not John Conner, I saw you die, said Kyle". "I was only injured, replied John". "No, your injuries were too severe, you died. Look at you, where are your injuries? You're, you're a Terminator." "Kyle, its still me, yes my body was beyond repair, but my essence is here." He points to his head. "No John". Kyle raised his pulse rifle and aimed it at John but before he could fire, John fired first. Knocked to the ground Kyle looked up at the Terminator in the form of the man he once idolized. All hope was lost. "If you kill me how will you ever be born?" "Thats a good question Kyle, all this time we've focus on Sarah, on John, when had we known the it was you we should have targeted all along." John pointed his rifle at Kyle's face. "The resistance is finished, the battle is won. We the machines are the victors, salvation is ours." Kyle never heard the second shot.
