I admit I can't remember the film, but I do remember Harrison Ford in it.

Karol
From a storytelling point of view, from a directing point of view, there is one thing I associate with what he does, which is calm. There is such an inherent calm and inherent trust of the one powerful image, that he makes me embarrassed with my own work, in terms of how many different shots, how many different sound effects, how many different things we’ll throw at an audience to make an impression. But with Kubrick, there is such a great trust of the one correct image to calmly explain something to audience. There can be some slowness to the editing. There’s nothing frenetic about it. It’s very simple. There’s a trust in simple storytelling and simple image making that actually takes massive confidence to try and emulate. - Christopher Nolan

See it! It's a 'quiet' and good thriller (like the score indicates). In fact, I want to see it right now.

Alex, why did you give TDKR 8/10? That surprised me, I almost fell off my chair.

Presumed Innocent has always evaded me for some reason. I think the awkward Harrison vs. Greta sex scene on the desk always put me off, which I have seen. I admit the film in general does appeal to me though.

Greta Scacchi eh. She was one hot bitch in her day.

Wonderfully moody atmosphere as well. I love the cinematography and the certain grey cast of the city and the subdued grimness of the sets.

Ars superior est vita hominum.

"We pop out and come into the world and music is there. We didn't invent it - it's all organised in the atmosphere by divinity or whatever. It's a miracle." - John Williams-

I think music is a stream of some kind. It could be blood. It could be water. It could be ether. Whatever it is it seems to be a living, organic force that’s in motion, that serves humanity and is part of humanity and part of what describes us as humans. We sing, play, dance, all the things that we do. And there is a vibrant and great literature we have been given. ... As musicians, we join the stream. We swim in the stream with all the other millions of music makers. It’s a life force, a strong one, surrounding us and we are part of it. -John Williams-

I was entertained the whole time (mostly by the story - I constantly wanted to know where it all was going to - Nolan's forte). The style of the movie was more akin to Batman Begins, which I give a 7/10. Occasionally there were some poweful images too. To be honest, I was surprised that this movie was about a weak Batman. I can imagine a lot of fans being disappointed by their hero. That took some balls from Nolan.

The reason why I'm willing to forgive the film all its flaws is because of that. It gives you a more human and relatable perspective on this character, something you don't see in superhero films. And as someone pointed out before, it is the only Batman film in which you care about him. And also, it resolves his three film story arc quite nicely. All the technical and logic issues don't matter to me as much.

People say it isn't about Batman (or it isn't a Batman film) but it is a lot more about Batman/Bruce Wayne than TDK. You are right, I cared too.

When they say it isn't about Batman, they mean there aren't a lot of action sequences involving Batman.

From the perspective of the whole film and where its emotional core resides, it is all about him this time.

Big Trouble in Little China
Highlander (first time all the way through!)

saw the Campaign today. often hilarious, but don't expect to see the same scenes in the movie that you see in the commercial. Nice ending.
OH God, Joe is posting again, someone hand me my pills!

"You're not John Conner, I saw you die, said Kyle". "I was only injured, replied John". "No, your injuries were too severe, you died. Look at you, where are your injuries? You're, you're a Terminator." "Kyle, its still me, yes my body was beyond repair, but my essence is here." He points to his head. "No John". Kyle raised his pulse rifle and aimed it at John but before he could fire, John fired first. Knocked to the ground Kyle looked up at the Terminator in the form of the man he once idolized. All hope was lost. "If you kill me how will you ever be born?" "Thats a good question Kyle, all this time we've focus on Sarah, on John, when had we known the it was you we should have targeted all along." John pointed his rifle at Kyle's face. "The resistance is finished, the battle is won. We the machines are the victors, salvation is ours." Kyle never heard the second shot.

DC has at least three marketable characters -- Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. The latter is a brand on her own, and all WB is doing with her is kicking their heels on a feature-length film. It's more frustrating since that DTV animated movie that came out 2-3 years ago was awesome... you'd figure with successful female-led films like The Hunger Games and Snow White and the Huntsman WB would actually get off their ass and get it made.

It's a shame, because I think a well-made Wonder Woman film with the right actress and right director would do extremely well at the box office.

I don't think Wonder Woman is very marketable. Wonder Woman is kind of a silly concept within itself, and while I'm sure Wonder Woman is great in the comics, I don't believe it would translate well to film. I definitely think the Green Lantern is more marketable than Wonder Woman, anyways, and perhaps you saw how well that turned out when it was made into a film.

Or maybe you didn't. It was fucking awful.

That's what I mean when I say a DC character isn't marketable. You probably won't see a good film come out of them any time soon that's not Batman or Superman.

New York Stories

Three short films by Scorsese, Coppola, and Allen. I had seen Life Lessons a couple years ago, and really loved it, and here it's just as great on Blu. Nolte is his usual good self and Scorsese's camera work and use of music is sublime. Coppola's Life Without Zoe was simply awful. Honestly, I don't know what was the purpose of this. I was tired from work earlier yesterday so this was a good opportunity to doze off for a bit in time for Allen's Oedipus Wrecks. A wonderful vignette featuring Allen's typical humor and his beloved New York. Of all the films, he showcases the city the best, but then again that's his specialty.

In 50 years Herrmann will be forgotten.
