Driving to work early this morning and turned on the radio to find the station already playing a bit of music.

"Mmm, I like this", I thought. Kept on listening.

"Mmm, I really like this. It has some film score-esque elements in it"

It got better and better.

Going by the overall feeling of the music, I made a wild guess that imaybe it was Scheherazade by Rimsky Korsakov.

Waited till it finished, and guess what the presenter said it was?

I knew that Korsakov had composed a piece called Scheherazade and roughly knew the subject matter, but I'd never heard it before.

Indeed. I do this sort of shit all the time. Tonight I was listening to ClassicFM on my way home and they were playing a Christmas carol, I forget which, some Copland piece, but I liked how full bodied the arrangement was. I thought it sounded like something Williams would do. When it finished the dj told me it was was conducted by John Williams and performed by the Boston Pops...

Well, it is about time to hear Scheherazade. :)..Not the best piece ever but brilliantly orchestrated..

John Williams kinda studied orchestration with Rimsky.

I have a tape of sheherazade...

Among all the things I have done in my short and pitiful life, becoming an inside joke on JWFAN is the one I'm the least proud of.

John Williams sucks, he doesn't write with a quill pen, there is no emotion in pencil music ! Purcell is the man !

Scheherazade is wonderful. I heard it in concert recently, and I don't really remember if I'd had prior exposure, but everything about the piece seemed so familiar. It's one of those universally accessible sort of pieces.

I think that same exact thing happened to me. Crazy.

Next time, get his name right for that added bonus point ;)

Seriously though - wonderful piece, and so multi-layered...was an option for my A-Level Music set piece, but I ended up having to do a Hoven (just getting the half-name thing right ;) ) Piano Concerto...not so bad - but there were better pieces..

John Lliams kinda studied orchestration with Rimsky.

Oh, wait....
