It's not impossible to conduct and play the piano at the same time (esp. in studio recordings with click tracks).

However, I guess Williams played only the piano solo part (i.e. the first 2 minutes), which probably has been recorded separately from the orchestral arrangement.
"It's still baffling to me. I sit down with a pencil and a piece of paper and do my best... The remarkable thing is that my music is heard by billions of people." --John Williams

"Let me say, however, there is no "next" John Williams. Sadly, he is unique--- a figure who simultaneously embodies and transcends the music of all the masters of film music who preceded him (much like Brahms and Wagner of the Romantic era). He comes from a time when the craft of music in film was still one of the ear, heart and mind. Today, sadly, the craft is largely technical. Most composers do not conceive their music "inwardly" but rather at the computer--- and with rather limited skills, musically, at that. The inner spirit knows no boundaries--- our plastic abilities, sadly, do. John is a man of spirit, heart, intellect and soaring music." -- Conrad Pope about John Williams

Gee, they couldn't remove the black behind Williams left eye-glasses...? Looks like a rush job (like the WH CD). What happened to the art designers at Sony...?

Speaking of JW playing the piano, the last track on the Schindler's List album (the piano part) is so perfectly well-played, it blows my mind. Every nuance, every little pause, every little hit is perfect. Also, it's played rubato, which I really like. You couldn't play this piece any better, I am sure.

Conductors appearing as soloists happens all the time. Just a couple of months ago, I attended an Andrew Litton performed/conducted concert, where he was the soloist on Gershwin's Rhapsody in blue.
Williams, in his many years with the BSO has appeared in this two capacities at once. The most recent case I recall was back in 2000, while performing and conducting the suite from Angela's Ashes.
Though, as mentioned above, it is likely that during the recording session, the piano was recorded separately.

Conductors appearing as soloists? Joe Hisaishi's been doing it for years.

My favorite conductor/perfomer is Christian Lindberg. Watching him play trombone and conduct with his slide at the same time is great fun.

And the violinist in the concert master position directing the ensemble while playing was the norm for many years before conductors started to really appear.

Amazon.com's tracklist reports that "Adventures of Mutt" and "Harry's Wondrous World" are taken from the original soundtrack recordings.

No surprise there.

When the track times match to the second, it's highly unlikely they are different recordings...

Bummer.

Sounds like KM. Doesn't look like him.

He is now more machine than man, twisted and craving complete scores.

Ars superior est vita hominum.

"We pop out and come into the world and music is there. We didn't invent it - it's all organised in the atmosphere by divinity or whatever. It's a miracle." - John Williams-

I think music is a stream of some kind. It could be blood. It could be water. It could be ether. Whatever it is it seems to be a living, organic force that’s in motion, that serves humanity and is part of humanity and part of what describes us as humans. We sing, play, dance, all the things that we do. And there is a vibrant and great literature we have been given. ... As musicians, we join the stream. We swim in the stream with all the other millions of music makers. It’s a life force, a strong one, surrounding us and we are part of it. -John Williams-

I am sure KM will start waving his arms around and shouting "Danger Will Robinson!" any day now to assimilate himself to his new avatar's form.
