I've heard it, but most of it isn't my thing.

I love the main theme and the 'Restoration' theme, but most of the rest of the score leaves me a bit cold.

Shame we can't buy individual tracks - I'd love to have those in better sound.

July 19, 2012 - We will put our Comic Con Titles up for sale on our website (yes I know its a Thursday). We are NOT doing it on Tuesday the 17th because we need some time to get things back together after returning from the Con

July 31, 2012 - we resume our regular release schedule with 1,2 or 3 titles (depending on approvals and back logs)

Aug 8 to Aug 12 - VEGAS BABY! Matt and I are getting our "geek on" and will be in Vegas for the Star Trek Convention.

Wow, great that there are up to 2 more Goldsmith titles next month in addition to ST TMP! For some reason, I am hoping to have an expanded version of LEGEND. While the OST was a very good representation, it was missing some cues, and some of the boots had a couple pretty interesting alternates, including a very different alternate of the "faerie dance".

LEGEND is more than sufficiently covered. I guess they either churn out DENNIS THE MENACE (FOREVER YOUNG, the other Big Screen Records release came out last year) and maybe another second-tier like CONGO.

Or we aren't lucky and it's another triple dipper like FREUD or COMA.

It seems La-La Land is trying to be the top label of the year again. So far they're doing a bang up job of it.

To MV/La La Land, I'm very happy to read that you will continue with some more golden age scores. They don't write scores like them anymore. Perhaps the best sellers would be epics, westerns, adventure etc.

Could you issue some cds by Max Steiner and Victor Young?

I was lucky enough in 1972 to find the LP of A Certain Smile. Now 40 years later I have your cds and continue to enjoy the music. A really beautiful score.

There is a Young coming, but for the most part, my ear for Golden Age music tends to skew more toward Tiomkin, Waxman and, of course, Herrmann (sadly I don't think I will ever be able to release a Herrmann score).

Newman and Steiner are hit and miss for me and Rozsa has been done to death (unless something like the complete El Cid surfaces inside some lost vault).

If by some miracle the Webb, Skinner and Salter horror music ever surfaced I would MURDER to get my hands on those scores.

Hopefully out of the 2 Goldsmith releases coming on June 19. It'll be either The Burbs ( I missed out on the VC), The Shadow, The River Wild, or Congo. I doubt it though. Dennis the Menace would also be cool.

Hopefully somewhere down the line on that schedule there'll be a Silvestri release. The Bodyguard, Blown Away or Judge Dredd would suffice.

La-La Land Records, Sony Music and Paramount Pictures boldly go where no soundtrack reissue has gone before with this deluxe 3-CD set of 1979‘s STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith.

The first big screen voyage of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock was a high budget and ambitious undertaking that introduced Goldsmith’s famous and enduring Star Trek march (later used as the main theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation) as the cornerstone of an epic science fiction musical odyssey. Like the film’s refit starship Enterprise, La-La Land’s lavish presentation presents the score anew: fully restored, remixed and mastered from the first generation multi-track masters by Bruce Botnick, the original album co-producer and Goldsmith’s long time scoring engineer.

“To put together the complete score the decision was to go back to the original Analogue 16-track 2-inch 30 i.p.s. masters,” Botnick explains. “John Davis at Precision Audiosonics baked each of the 37 rolls in a convection oven at 110º for eight hours so that they were playable, then rolled out a marvelous 3M 56 IsoLoop 16-track machine with brand new heads. The tapes were resolved at 60Hz to maintain the original orchestral pitch and sync. The Analogue-to-Digital transfer was done from the 16-track through the latest Black Lion A/D convertors and recorded to Pro Tools X at 192kHz 24-bit.”

This 3-CD set presents the score for the 1979 theatrical release (filling disc 1 and part of disc 2) and also premieres the legendary early “rejected” cues that Goldsmith recorded prior to composing his famous main theme. The 1979 album program (much of which is performed and edited differently as compared to the film) completes disc 2, with disc 3 offering additional alternates (including those heard on the previous Sony expanded release) along with a wealth of bonus material. Among the highlights are a collection of early takes of the “Main Title” (including extensive stage chatter), isolated segments featuring Craig Huxley’s famous “blaster beam” and assorted synthesizer excerpts, the domestic CD debut of Bob James’ disco cover version of Goldsmith’s theme and Shaun Cassidy’s vocal version of the love theme, “A Star Beyond Time.”

Reissue co-producer Mike Matessino (who handled restoration and editorial efforts) collaborates with Jeff Bond on the thoroughly researched album notes which feature interview excerpts by Goldsmith, Botnick and performers Huxley and David Newman. The clamshell packaging and 40-page full color booklet are designed by Jim Titus.

“It has been an honor to be able to work with the original recordings of this music and to document its production,” Matessino says. “This is one of the greatest scores of all time and everyone involved took the responsibility very seriously and happily devoted months to see it come together. The clarity and quality we now have is truly amazing. This fascinating release is brought to you courtesy of La-La Land Records, Paramount Pictures and Capitol Records. For the first time ever Jerry Goldsmith’s moody, jazzy score to the 1967 cop thriller WARNING SHOT comes to cd. Tracks 1-16 of this release feature the premiere release of the original soundtrack recording. Unfortunately, no scoring masters survived, and the only source for this recording is the film’s monaural music stem. Rising and falling volume levels have been smoothed out – but this results in varying levels of hiss. In addition, low levels of sound effects and dialogue “bleed” can be heard from adjacent channels from the film’s audio masters. These have been minimized, but not entirely eliminated, with a light stereo ambiance added to the monaural source to improve listenability. In other words, it’s like our previous release of SECONDS.

Tracks 17 – 27 feature the Si Zentner Album remastered from the original ¼ inch stereo album master. Tracks 17-22 feature Si’s interpretation of Jerry’s score while tracks 23-27 features Si’s interpretations of famous themes of Jerry Goldsmith, included Man from UNCLE, A Patch of Blue and The Prize.

Would the Jurassic Park Operation Genesis videogame soundtrack have anny appeal to customers? Or to MV? (making it a limited 1000 unit release for example)

It's a great score, and according from what the composer told me, i think he has the master tapes. The only way to have a lossless version (and the opening cinematic music) would be working with those. It probably has some 'Universal' rights, but maybe the music is 100% propiety of the composer...

Well, it's a bias thing. If you lean more towards 80s-90s material, you probably prefer LLL; if you like older scores, Intrada. Not that that's what they release exclusively, but you can definitely tell a pattern.

I probably prefer LLL deep down, the stuff they release is just so close to my personal taste. I mean, nothing can beat that MOH box for me. But Intrada is just smashing it out of the park every other week. The Disney line has really boosted them up there for me.

LLL has had more high profile releases lately, but Intrada is the one that has been consistently been breaking new ground. I do tend to buy more from Intrada than from LLL though, my tastes skew more toward what they offer. The LLL Golden Age releases so far though have been awesome.

I think LLR's releases steer more towards mainstream and nerd territory than Intrada or even FSM do. This is apparent with their popular scores of ID4, MOH, The X-Files, two Star Trek films and some TNG material, all the Batman scores, all the other Elfman, and other stuff I can't recall off the top of my head.

That's not to say that Intrada hasn't released their share of nerd scores: Back to the Future and two other Star Trek film scores. And FSM has rounded out the other two classic Star Trek film scores, plus the giant box of TNG material and The Goonies Gremlins, among others. A lot of Intrada and FSM's other releases have mostly been to older more obscure films or from artists that most nerds don't follow.

And then there's Varese, who aside from The Goonies and a poorly appreciated Star Trek XI album, doesn't steer much into nerd territory. Unless you consider Spartacus nerdy.
