filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Wow!I just saw this (and haven't seen it mentioned again):http://www.ifc.com/fix/2011/02/anthony-hopkins-film-composerhas anyone heard any of these pieces?
Quintus 6,493 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 I heard some snippets the other day on the radio. It was about as interesting as actor-cum 'musician' orchestral music can be and almost certainly would never had seen the light of day if he didn't have an illustrious acting career under his belt.
ShowUStheHOOK 8 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 I haven't heard any of the score, but I did hear the pieces he wrote and played in the film HANNIBAL... based on that.. I can't really see him writing a film score. Note when I say this, its not because he can't write. He can, but unless his writing skills have improved since Hannibal, I think he needs a bit more experience in composition before attempting a film score, thats all. The pieces he played on piano were good.
nightscape94 968 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Probably about as interest as Clint Eastwood's scores.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Anthony Hopkins is an actor! He may have some hobbies, but he is still an actor!
Jim Ware 638 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Jim Ware was at that concert! As was Tim Burden! There's a CD available too - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Composer-Anthony-Hopkins/dp/B005K7HBMS/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1334384642&sr=1-1
Jill Sandwich 11,164 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Tony Robbins is a composer? Aren't the burning hot coals enou-- oh, Tony Hopkins!
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Anthony Hopkins is an actor! He may have some hobbies, but he is still an actor! He's clearly an artist, Steef. Artists don't have to stick to one medium to express themselves.Alex
Quintus 6,493 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Nah, I don't call actors that. I find actors who position themselves under the 'artist' umbrella pretentious. That painting is clearly the musings of a fairly talented person, but they're a dime a dozen.
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 I find actors who position themselves under the 'artist' umbrella pretentious. I don't.Artist: A person who produces works in any of the arts that are primarily subject to aesthetic criteria.BTW, it is I who says Hopkins is an artist (based upon the definition of the word), not Hopkins himself. The latter would be a whole other matter.
Quintus 6,493 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 True. I'm not sure Hopkins has ever said anything of the sort. Then again, maybe he has.But when I see an acToor like Hopkins using their fame and considerable clout to release commercial recordings of their orchestral musings the cynic in me sneers ego. It's just my predisposition.Saying that, I did warm to Hugh Laurie's ongoing flirt with a recording career. When asked why he did it, he basically said it was for his own amusement. He's always enjoyed mucking about with singing, but he couldn't believe someone would be "stupid" enough to pay him to and was frankly amazed when it not only did turn out to be not awful, but that people actually liked and bought it. I liked his modesty and throwaway attitude towards it. He was actually laughing through the whole question.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Hitler also painted, Alex. Was he an artist?
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Yes, but whether he was a master or a great artist, I do not know. I've never seen any of his paintings.Of course, I doubt if he's comparable to Hopkins who has been looking for ways to express himself (through different art forms) most of his life. Who knows, maybe he's a much better painter than Hopkins.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Whatever became of him?
Quintus 6,493 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 He murdered a few million innocents and sadly his painting career was put on hold.
Quintus 6,493 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Yeah, countless lost. He might have gone on to paint at least thirty notable works.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 Sorry that I resurrect an old thread, but... has this been posted? (and how can I embed the video?)

filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 (and how can I embed the video?)http://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=21160Thanks.well, what do you all think? I kind of liked it..
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 It's very nice. Hopkins is certainly a decent composer. All his T's are crossed and his I's are dotted. But it is in the end, just another waltz. Almost stereotypically so.The best part for me are the first 2 minutes or so, before it becomes a full Vienna-style panto-piece. Quite moody and lyrical. Not that fucking André Rieu. What is wrong with him?He brings light orchestral music to millions of people. In many ways what he does and what John Williams did during his tenure with the Boston Pops isnt all that different.
Sharkissimo 1,978 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Not that fucking André Rieu. What is wrong with him? He's the Kenny G of violinists, plus he's everywhere on Sky Arts.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 But it is in the end, just another waltz. Almost stereotypically so. We have to keep in mind that he wrote this at the age of 26-27.John Williams himself didn't write Jaws or Star Wars at that age.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 But John Williams went on to become a major film composer, with a reputable repertoire for the concert hall.Anthony Hopkins became an actor instead. The only reason this was performed is because it was composed by Hannibal the cannibal.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 I meant that we shouldn't judge the piece by the standards of a major composer who works for years, but by the standards of a starting young man.(not that you did it, i was just saying..)I can hear "something there" and I'm almost sure, if Hopkins had pursued a composer's career he would excel! He certainly has a gift for melody that he could have developed.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I doubt he would have been a better composer then he is an actor.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I discovered his stuff a while back. I always like it when non-composers try their hand at it.
KK 3,313 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Can't listen to it. Not available in my country apparently.

KK 3,313 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Thanks filmmusic! A simple waltz yes, but that's a great melody. I'd like to hear his other concert works.
Thor 9,362 Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 He's done some film music too. Worth checking out. Hopkins is my second favourite actor of all time, but not only because of his acting skills -- also because of his persona and general creativity which encompasses his music skills and his painting.
