Theremins are awesome. With one you can either warn of the coming of Cthulhu or play walking bass.

Violin, a bit piano, a tiny bit of viola and cello. Would like to 'learn' singing, horn, cello.

Well I can play the Prelude from the first Bach suite on cello but with an awful technique. I physically can play viola, but I cannot sight-read as easily as with violin :-)

For the last twelve years, I taught high school band. My principal instrument is trumpet, but I'm also well versed in singing and piano/keyboards.

After twelve years, and getting cut three times because of budget problems - and plain ole politics - I'm probably leaving the classroom perminently. I've pretty much had it up to here with education.

After every thing I've been through, I can honestly say that if I had to do it all over again, I would not have become a teacher. And, please understand, it's not the kids. GOD NO, it's not them. I can understand when and why they're morons. They're kids and they can't help it. I've even sent at least a dozen kids on to be musicians and educators themselves. It's the adults. Adults that behave worse than the kids do.

I was taken to the civil liberties union and it was decided I am only allowed to teach religious music in the third person (lyrics) and it has to be historical and by someone famous. no noobs on the repertoire. Sorry Francisco Nunez.

I'm not religious, but if there's one thing I can't stand, it's a militant atheist who thinks the line between church and state means there are also lines between church and history, church and art, church and music, church and movies, etc. I suppose that since "state" provides the public funding required to keep public education afloat, they have a point, to a degree, but not to the extent you describe.

I wouldn't want to be a school band or choral director and have to select pieces for a mid-December concert program, called whatever is fashionable.

I think music is a stream of some kind. It could be blood. It could be water. It could be ether. Whatever it is it seems to be a living, organic force that’s in motion, that serves humanity and is part of humanity and part of what describes us as humans. We sing, play, dance, all the things that we do. And there is a vibrant and great literature we have been given. ... As musicians, we join the stream. We swim in the stream with all the other millions of music makers. It’s a life force, a strong one, surrounding us and we are part of it. -John Williams-

And, when that happens, about 90% of the vocal music rep is now off limits. So, you're basically left with the Jonas Bros. and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Yeah, that's just one of the things that irritates me - heaven forbid we mention God during rehearsal, or have Christmas Concert. Watch the world come unhindged...

I have never, ever understood the strange practise of defining music as christian/non christian etc etc....most music can be traced back to church roots if you go back far enough - proud atheist though I am, there can be no denying the profound effect that christian culture has had on music. Other cultures too, but much more recently. Even pre-christianity music can very often be routed through some religious ideal.

For what it's worth though, I went to school where music was taught very mich in the style that Ren is forced to teach in....put me off a lot of things for a loooong time, and I will never forget the faces at one of my final performances at school - I was due to play the glorious "The Trumpet Shall Sound", but instead pulled out a sexy Flugal and did a hot verion of "Stardust" instead....the stuffy head was horrified!!
