Since this is the version I grew up with, the classic German LOTR release by Klett Cotta still has a special place in my heart; the illustrations don't make a lot of sense, but they have class:

I also love everything in HaperCollins' black paperback Tolkien series though:

I love collecting the Barnes and Noble leatherbound series and this is one of my favourites from them. There's an enormous amount of detail here.

But usually all the covers from that series are awesome.

Classic 90s Star Wars novel retrospect:

- Luke on the SOTE cover is dressed like a trucker and Prince Xizor looks like a Power Rangers villain.

- Wow, is that buff wizard guy on the Heir to the Empire cover lame. So NOT Star Wars.

um is that the junior version? the new versions of the young adult novels have nice covers, and all Weis & HIckman books have matching covers (except dragons of the hourglass mage... which has a different spine thanks to wizards of the coast new layout)

Do you like John Williams? His early work was a little too jazzy for my taste, but when Jaws came out in '75 I really think he came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and an air of consummate professionalism that really gives the pieces a big boost. He's been compared to Jerry Goldsmith but I think John has a far more leitmotif-driven style of composing. In '82 John composed this, E.T., his most accomplished album to date. I think his undisputed masterpiece is "The Magic of Halloween", a theme so catchy most people don't listen to what it means. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of childhood and the importance of friendship, it's also a personal statement about the man himself. Hey Paul!

This one has been one of my favourites for a while now, by Ted Nasmith:

Same artist, same book, different cover:

And this is indeed a quintessential cover for Lord of the Rings. A great shame that the original painting was stolen from Howe and is now lost. :(

Also this interesting and elegant art by Claire Scully caught my eye:
Posted Image

Ars superior est vita hominum.

"We pop out and come into the world and music is there. We didn't invent it - it's all organised in the atmosphere by divinity or whatever. It's a miracle." - John Williams-

I think music is a stream of some kind. It could be blood. It could be water. It could be ether. Whatever it is it seems to be a living, organic force that’s in motion, that serves humanity and is part of humanity and part of what describes us as humans. We sing, play, dance, all the things that we do. And there is a vibrant and great literature we have been given. ... As musicians, we join the stream. We swim in the stream with all the other millions of music makers. It’s a life force, a strong one, surrounding us and we are part of it. -John Williams-
