Half the fun of beach volleyball is the noises of ecstasy from the players.

Historically the only source of sand was reliably found at the beach.
Trust me, I've played "beach volleyball" pretty far inland in college, in my bare feet, at 1 in the morning, and not given a shit that it wasn't at the beach. Nobody has bothered to rename the sport to be known as "sand volleyball."
But Stef, if you want this to become your calling in life, to rename the sports that are so inappropriately named, you go right ahead.

That's the only reason our players have to gear up with medieval armor. One guy breaks his neck and a team is sued to oblivion.

Does London even have beaches?
The beach volleyball is taking place in a temporary arena built in Horse Guards Parade, where Trooping the Colour usually takes place. 5,000 tonnes of sand were shipped in from a quarry in Godstone in Surrey for the playing surface.
I've been a very lucky bunny this week - yesterday evening I went to the athletics in the Olympic Stadium and saw Usain Bolt jog his way to the 200m final, amongst other events, while today I was at Hyde Park to watch the women's 10k marathon swim where I got to cheer on one of my sporting heroes, Keri-anne Payne. Agonisingly, she missed out on a medal by 0.4 seconds in a dramatic sprint finish after nearly two hours of non-stop swimming around the Serpentine. It was a wonderful setting and a thrilling spectacle from start to finish.

Team GB is doing great, but being hammered 9-2 in the hockey semi final by Holland is a bit humiliating
Truth. Our men's hockey team was very embarrassed, but from the highlights I saw the Dutch were worthy of their win (and they have been well supported, judging by the numbers of orange-clad spectators I have come across on the way to and from the venues). The good thing about hockey - a game that I have never played myself - is that it strikes me as being more or less like football but with sticks, so I can enjoy it without knowing all the rules. Our women's team won the bronze medal match this afternoon so I am hoping the men will be suitably inspired to restore their pride against the Aussies tomorrow.

Ars superior est vita hominum.
"We pop out and come into the world and music is there. We didn't invent it - it's all organised in the atmosphere by divinity or whatever. It's a miracle." - John Williams-
I think music is a stream of some kind. It could be blood. It could be water. It could be ether. Whatever it is it seems to be a living, organic force that’s in motion, that serves humanity and is part of humanity and part of what describes us as humans. We sing, play, dance, all the things that we do. And there is a vibrant and great literature we have been given. ... As musicians, we join the stream. We swim in the stream with all the other millions of music makers. It’s a life force, a strong one, surrounding us and we are part of it. -John Williams-

Yup. We topped the medal count at Vancouver 2010 and got the record of most gold medals in any single Winter Olympics.
But if my history is right, my own country has the alltime gold medal record and has been in front of Canada on quite a few Winter Olympics. Not bad for a country of 5 million people as opposed to Canada's 34 million (or other mastodont countries like USA and Russia)!
Hey, we suck at summer games....we need something to brag about.
That being said, I'm impressed by our handball girls tonight, who took the gold and defended their win from the last Olympics.

Great Olympics!
I have loved these last two weeks and will feel rather bereft tomorrow when it's all over.
It's great seeing sports that you don't usually watch and getting caught up in the excitement of it all - one of my favourite moments was watching on TV as Charlotte Dujardin won the freestyle dressage on her horse Valegro. She went last and had to get a really good score to win the gold medal; I think it was the choice of music that helped.
