What a great shame. It is such a beautiful and powerful score, one of Bernstein's all time best and a classic in its own right. I wonder if it truly was Alan J. Pakula who didn't want to license this.

We do have the excellent re-recording of the score though, conducted by Bernstein himself, who was reportedly truly happy with the new album.

For now, the material in Bernstein's FMC and his various re-recording suites are sufficient.

I like the re-recording perfectly fine.

However, the film's producer is an idiot.

I don't think that means it will never happen, right? It's just unlikey to happen in that producer's lifetime.

Well the only credited Producer on the film according to IMDB is Alan J Pakula. He died in 1998. So I'm guessing it's his estate that is showing no interest

I wonder why people sit on these rights for so long. Do they have lawyers telling them they can make money if they make a deal with someone in years or decades, or lawyers telling them it'll never be worth the trouble, not ever?

The good news is that the original elements still exist. This wouldn't be the first time that we've been told that it was impossible to get the rights to something, and then eventually had it come out.

The other good news is that in meantime there are still multiple recordings of this to choose from.

It'll just sit on a hard drive somewhere until a license holder with some sense inherits the rights.


But yes - the only reason I truly accept for 'will never happen' is the master tapes being destroyed.
