Aw, this looks really cool. I always figured that music for an old TV show would have ended up in the trash, or at least horribly degraded in sound quality. The thought that it was all perfectly preserved and that there is a large amount of never-before-heard music makes this very enticing.

Is this music "intensely desired"?

Agreed, at least Paramount likes to keep the original master DATs music for Star Trek both films and TV in perfect condition. Unlike the idiot George Lucas...

Star Trek: The Original Series 15 CD Box Set

"My name is Melange, and I approve of this release" as the original series has some etherial otherworldy music.

However, I probably won't end up buying it.

I find myself looking at these increasingly interesting releases these days and thinking - "Mmm, well yes that's very nice. very nice indeed", but not feeling absolutely compelled to buy them as may have been the case in the past. If I'm honest, there are many many soundtrack CDs in my modest (in comparison to some here) collection that are rarely played, and it has been a long time now since I've added any new ones to that collection. I'm even considering being brutal and wittling that collection down and selling off the ones that are nice to own but are hardly ever listened to, so adding a mega box set like this won't help matters, and in reality how often would I be playing 15 T.O.S CDs?

Btw, isn't that Mr Neil.S.Bulk in that video?

The one and only!

~*~

I stock up on sets like this that interest me because while I might not listen to it in the here and now, I plan to live for quite a while yet. Someday I will have and make the time to listen to this set, and I will have it, without having to hunt on the internet and pay 2x or 3x its current selling price for a rare one.

Though I may have seen less than half of the original series of Star Trek, so me and Netflix have some catching up to do. The guy on the right in that video with the dark goatee -- I don't remember his name -- alluded to the idea that many young men who mock fight their friends are going to start humming the fight music from when Spock and Kirk come to blows, and that's not true. I don't identify with that music, I wouldn't recognize it if you played it, and that bothers me -- I would probably be humming Rocky or Europe's Final Countdown or something. I haven't grown up with this series like I should have, only TNG and newer. You might ask why I would then waste my music on something like this, but I look at it as correcting an error of circumstance.

I received an email from La-La Land regarding their upcoming TOS release, in which they stated that this will be a 6000-unit release, hopefully in November, with a price of $244.98.

Also I never saw this picture before that Neil posted on August 10th:

He captioned it

Here are all of the CD-R masters we've had on Star Trek so far. I have them organized by revision, so the first pile is the first version of all 15 discs. The second pile is the next set and then the third and fourth versions (by then it was only selected discs). We should be done now.

You underestimate Trekkies. When people signed up for the e-mail list, they took a poll of how many people planned on purchasing the set, which is where they got their 6,000. I assume the actuall number was around 4-5 thousand, and they added more to be safe

In 50 years Herrmann will be forgotten.

They may have gotten enough people "confirming" that they would buy it when they signed up for the mailing list (though I hardly feel that was a binding contract). They would have combined that number with the amount they already planned to sell to major resellers and have available at conventions to arrive at that amount.

This set may be exclusive since it's an overwhelming volume of Star Trek TV show music, but it's had 46 years to become embedded in the minds of so many people who cherish it. I believe this set will sell better than the TNG set.

And I'll have to start re-watching the show on Netflix to "do my homework," so to speak.

I don't know. I ended up signing up for the mailing list with two email addresses, because the first never sent me the link to confirm that I wanted to buy it, but now both emails have me on the mailing list. I hope that I did not register as a double hit because I am not buying two of these beasts.

I love Star Trek(doesn't need a qualifier) better than probably anyone here, but I'll pass on this.
OH God, Joe is posting again, someone hand me my pills!

"You're not John Conner, I saw you die, said Kyle". "I was only injured, replied John". "No, your injuries were too severe, you died. Look at you, where are your injuries? You're, you're a Terminator." "Kyle, its still me, yes my body was beyond repair, but my essence is here." He points to his head. "No John". Kyle raised his pulse rifle and aimed it at John but before he could fire, John fired first. Knocked to the ground Kyle looked up at the Terminator in the form of the man he once idolized. All hope was lost. "If you kill me how will you ever be born?" "Thats a good question Kyle, all this time we've focus on Sarah, on John, when had we known the it was you we should have targeted all along." John pointed his rifle at Kyle's face. "The resistance is finished, the battle is won. We the machines are the victors, salvation is ours." Kyle never heard the second shot.

Yes, but it's only one more disc and just over one more hour of music. That just means there are a bigger number of shorter tracks on this TOS box set, even taking into account the snippet tracks on Jones' videogame discs.

It truly looks like a superb collection of music, but realistically, would they not sell more if they were sold in sections rather than in one mega box as a one off mega shell out of cash? I know they will always have guaranteed sales of it both from enthusiasts and scalpers who will buy several of these sets then store them in an cupboard unopened for years in order to extract the maximum blood out of true enthusiasts later on on Ebay or similar, but I would have preferred to have bought bits and pieces from the collection. I'm sorry but the sheer price of that turns me off. I would have preferred to have bought them slowly in 'seasons' perhaps, if the opportunity had been there. I don't want to shell out effectively $225 + shipping. It has become more like window shopping, a luxury that few will put before more realistic expenditures.

IMHO, the completeness of the set is a major selling point.

If it were split into seasons, it would garner complaints about paying too much for the previously unheard material, and if it was sold as a 4th set, then nobody would get it.

They have to pay Paramount/CBS the same cash net for the whole lot, and this allows for far more creative options for presenting the score, and the luxury of being more comprehensive.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

I fail to understand why anyone would want to own some of the seasons instead of all of them. Also, if each season was released six months apart, for example, would you buy them as they were released -- which requires separate shipping investments for each package -- or wait until all were released to make your order, which defeats the purpose of buying them in increments?

$225+shipping at once is basically the same investment as $225/3 + shipping every six months over eighteen months. It's probably less actually, taking interest into account, since your money will devalue over time, even though the price of each volume would not increase over time, assuming of course that the material was actually split into even thirds for the seasons. Until we get tracklists to ensure five discs per season, we can't "know."

Personally, the fact that the entire series comes out in one complete set all at once is very attractive. Sure, it's massively expensive, like any of the FSM boxes, but the cost is proportion to the exclusivity and time delay of the material. On the other hand, if this would be like any of the irregularly released soundtrack volumes like Intrada's Battlestar Galactica, La La Land's Star Trek TNG (and DS9, someday), X-Files, and Batman: TAS, when you don't really know when the next installment will be released to budget accordingly...I would not like it as much.

On the third hand -- gimme five -- no matter which position is taken, I will find ways to advocate the devil.

@Wojo: stop being facetious.
