scallenger 665 Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Wow! Awesome! And I kick ass! I definitely made sure I didn't miss this one!
ManofDestiny 104 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Can anyone tell me that if the score in the film is so short? Only 60 minutes?Anyway, my order shipped within two hours after it placed. Pretty quick.
scallenger 665 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 You must have missed my post response in the LLL thread. Here it is again. I think it is the complete FILM score judging by names and track times, if you compare it to the recording sessions. The recording sessions for this film have been bootlegged for some time, but it had a TON of alternates and pickups. The alternates from the recording sessions aren't too amazing, mostly different mixes or additions/removals of certain elements, so the fact that they only included one of these isn't really a big loss. It is curious as to why they didn't include some of the other alternates though, since they certainly did have a lot of room to do so. Oh well. It also looks like they combined a lot of cues, which is for the best for an album presentation of this score since there were many shorter cues within it. Probably won't be able to completely confirm if there are any actual missing cues until I get this baby in the mail, since a number of the track names differ on their release compared to the recording sessions.
scallenger 665 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Got this in the mail today the same time as I finally got Congo (which is a bit of coincidence since the liner notes of Relic actually mentions Congo being made around the same time, hence why The Relic was sought after for similar sci-fi Crichton-esque thrills). Very happy again that I was able to get one of the "more limited than usual" signed liner booklets! Speaking of the booklet, what a fantastically detailed booklet for fans of the film, with lovely photos (including two VERY good photos of the creature, including the one that's right UNDER the CD as you lift it up... it scared the hell out of me! LOL). This movie deserves more love than it usually gets. Sure the BluRay had a commentary by the director and a short featurrette (which is more than most old film re-issues get these days), I love more detailed looks like this booklet gives. Definitely had some information I never knew about the film, and fun to finally hear Debney's insights on it, including that both him and Hyams feared giant squids as children (Debney from watching 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, and Hyams from a giant squid that freaked him out in a museum, hence his interest in filming a movie about a monster in a museum). Or the fact that during Debney's composing for the film, his air conditioning kept going out in his little studio (which really pissed him off), resulting him composing some of the "rampaging music" with his shirt off! LOL!Despite a promotional release and even a complete bootleg of the score that have been out there for years (that features an alternate take/mix of almost EVERY single cue), this is definitely the most rewarding and most listenable version of the entire score as heard in the film (save for one cue not featured in the film and one of the alternates mentioned). It is a shame they didn't include a lot more of the alternate versions of certain cues, especially since they did have room (a lot of these alternate mixes removed extra creepy electronic-like elements and were more of just the pure orchestra) or keep some of the cues separated ("Lights Out" definitely should have just been on it's own, IMO). Still, they did solve the guesswork of which cues were actually the ones used in the film, and for that I am forever grateful, haha. The liner notes don't flat-out say that this IS the complete film-version score, but I think it was implied since they mentioned the various alternates they had to choose from, as mentioned.Whether any of you "obtained" the recording sessions or not, I definitely recommend purchasing LaLaLand's official edition. It's much better than that initial promo version (which was in a different order and omitted a number of cues), and while it is missing alternates... they're just alternates mixes really. It's otherwise the same music. To finally have a nice album arrangement in film order with JUST the film version's cues is definitely a worthy release, complete with fantastic liner notes and photos, and if you were lucky like me, a lovely autograph. To be honest, the only thing I truly didn't like about this release was the cover! Sure, it certainly is an accurate portrayal of the poster image of the film (also was on the U.S. VHS), but I never liked it back then either because I don't think it really sells the actual movie too well. It's a lot cooler than the image would ever suggest!
Jay 46,241 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Thanks for that write-up scallenger, I enjoyed reading it! I will have to check out the samples on this one for sure.
scallenger 665 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 You ever get a chance to listen to this one? If so, what did you think? Also, I don't know how, but I missed LaLaLand's art they did for this on their Facebook! I LOVE it!
Jay 46,241 Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Haven't really listened to any score except The Hobbit in months lol
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Mainly Skyfall, LOTR and The Hobbit for me.
