filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I don't know if you love anime or Studio Ghibli, but - because I do - I was devastated by this news!!http://ghiblicon.blogspot.gr/2013/04/breaking-disney-to-acquire-studio.htmlIt will be the "end" of traditional animation! After Disney had stopped making hand-drawn animations and gave up making something artistically beautiful in favour of making quick-box-office hits, I had my hopes on Ghibli and always said "Thank heavens, there's still Ghibli"!But now, that passes to Disney too! "This includes quick rollout of DVD and Blu-Ray, merchandising items (yes, kids, we're getting stuffed Totoros!), and, most of all, new direct-to-video spinoff movies featuring your favorite Ghibli characters."OMG! Noooooo!!It seems Disney will be the king in movie business.Lucasfilms, now this, what's next?
BLUMENKOHL 1,110 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Disney has no intention of killing traditional animation.
Giftheck 1,219 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Disney killed off its own internal traditional animation division. But in acquiring Ghibli, that may mean they won't stop doing it all together.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 Disney has no intention of killing traditional animation. How's that?Didn't it kill its own? Didn't you see the announcement that there aren't any plans for hand-drawn animations?Disney killed off its own internal traditional animation division. But in acquiring Ghibli, that may mean they won't stop doing it all together.I hope so, but I think that they may turn Ghibli too to be a money-maker, and that means only computer animations and projects without any artistic quality..
Brónach 1,330 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 They might pull the plug because it doesn't sell enough outside Japan. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised. Why does everything have to belong to Disney of all companies? I'd like it if Pixar and Ghibli were outside.
Jay 46,244 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Not surprised by this at all, Disney and Studio Ghibli have had a great partnership for years.I don't see in any way how this news means Studio Ghibili will stop making traditional hand-drawn animated films. I'm sure that will continue.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 WHAT THE...?Then I checked the date of the article... BloodBoal, you idiot! And so are you, filmmusic! What?? HAHA!I didn't check the date and i totally fell for it!!Jason you can close the thread, or even better delete it if you like!(phew! that was a close one! I'm happy again!)sorry for any inconvenience I caused!
Giftheck 1,219 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Truthfully, Disney have that many fingers in that many pies it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they DID in the future.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 I don't know what the rest of you think, but Disney hasn't made anything (except 4-5 Disney-Pixar films) worthy of quality in the last years, that can stand the test of time.Well, at least we have Snowwhite, Pinocchio, Bambi, Fantasia, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion king etc..but that is a discussion of another possible thread.
Smeltington 2,008 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I do hope we get more Ghibli Blu-Rays someday soon. I got a chance to see many of their films in 35mm last year, which was just amazing.
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Seriously though, didn't Lasseter plan to continue traditional 2D animation when he took over Disney's animation department? I loved Princess and the Frog, was it such a financial flop that they abandoned all further plans?
Once 1,083 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Yeah, both Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh was financial flops, especially compared to Tangled and Pixar's movies. Last they said was that they had no 2D feature in the works. Maybe in the future!
Luke Skywalker 2,383 Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 So disney will cancel Totoro Wars and Close GhibliArts vigeogame company too? PD: Oh, I see...
