I'd rather have the music for One Man Band, his best Pixar short score (in my not so humble opinion).

I keep hoping Brave gets an FYC disc that includes his music for La Luna like with Toy Story 3 / Day & Night.

Cast and crew promo, you mean.

I also hope for that situation :)

La Luna I don't think they made the music avilable. The FYC Site is still up but their is no music uploaded.

And might I add, La Lune was one of their loveliest and most wondrous shorts even though Brave itself wasn't up to scratch.

Agreed!

On an unrelated note, I haven't heard much mention of the fact that Giacchino arranged and composed some music for the new Luigi's Flying Tires attraction at the Disneyland Resort. A lot of it is just arrangements of classic Italian songs, but I realized that one of them is an Italian-ized version of Giacchino's theme from Cars 2! I actually like it a lot better than what you hear in the film, haha. :P

Anyone else kinda bummed that after John Carter (March '12), we don't get another Giacchino score until the Star Trek sequel in May of 2013?

Seems like in the 14 intervening months he could fit a few scores in - perhaps he isn't getting any offers?

I browsed wikipedia and found these films coming out between John Carter and Star Trek (X)II that I think could lead to great Giacchino scores

Total Recall
Dredd
The Cold Light Of Day
Hotel Translyvania
Looper
Red Dawn
Rise of the Guardians
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
Last Stand
Elysium
Carrie
Jack The Giant Killer
The Host

etc

Somebody, hire Gia for something between now and then!

Nobody needs 14 months to score a 2 hour film. He could take on one or two other movies and still leave a LOT of time to score Star Trek (X)II

Nobody NEEDS it, but it can sure help. And to be honest, Giacchino's had a ton of work the past few years, I don't want him to burn out like Horner did after doing a zillion projects in the early 80s.

Giacchino has said multiple times that he now only works with friends and is picky about his projects. So that leaves J.J. Abrams, Brad Bird and Pixar, more or less.

A bad move, in my opinion. I hope he hasn't already hit his peak.

In 50 years Herrmann will be forgotten.

Give him a break. I seem to remember back in 2009 with Star Trek/Lost/Up/ Land Of The Lost/Prep And Landing/3 short films and the Oscars he was planning on taking a break but that didn't exactly happen. ;)

Good points made here. I was thinking he was wanting to work but just not getting offers, but I guess its equally likely he is choosing to take an extended time off before his next big assignment.

Still, as a fan, it'll be a long, hard wait! Maybe we'll get some extended versions of his older scores between now and then :)

My only wish for Giacchino is that he gets rid of his sound engineer.
I can't listen to John Carter for example. The sound is so bad, it sounds like it was recorded 40 years ago with a 40 piece orchestra...

Seems a compilation of MoH music. But sounds different.
"I get asked all the time, 'What happens after Return of the Jedi?,' and there really is no answer for that. The movies were the story of Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, and when Luke saves the galaxy and redeems his father, that's where that story ends."

Ya know what he should do more of? Small movies. Goldsmith and Horner did/do a ton, even Williams has his fair share, but Giacchino's largely doing big summer movies or CGI-fests (not that there's a huge problem with either). And since he's said he'll mainly work with friends/Pixar at this point, that's all he'll be doing for a while. Family Stone and 50/50 are the only ones that really come to mind, but it might not be a bad idea to vary his workload a little and do something that isn't action-adventure-sci-fi.

Just thinking out loud, of course. I like his big scores as much as anyone. :)

Bingo. Although I'd like to see Giacchino do more films that provoke more dramatic scores. We haven't really heard much of his more mature, dramatic scoring yet. Give the guy some serious, Oscar-bait film. I would be very interested in the results. As it is, I'm not on board with the whole "Giacchino is the next Williams"/"Giacchino is the saviour of all film music" concept yet, I might even dare say its he might be a tad bit overrated in that sense. But I really do like the guy and I'd just like to see his style mature more. That and get rid of Dan Walin...

He's done a fair share of drama. Of course parts of Up, Super 8, and Star Trek like "Married Life," "Letting Go" and "Labor Of Love," and then there's a little bit of M:i:III. LOST is Oscar-worthy music. A straight drama from him would probably just sound like Earth Days.

Those are drama scenes in action/adventure/sci-fi movies, not really what K.K. and I are talking about. He's got a ton of crowd-pleasing scores out there (everything you've just named), but he doesn't really have a Monsignor, or a Nixon, or even a Witches of Eastwick in his oeuvre. I'd love to hear Giacchino tackle a dark, weighty drama like Nixon, if only because he's never really done anything like that.

Let Me In was horror, and the score was interesting. I'd like him to try more films like that. Like Miles said, give him some weighty drama like Nixon. Something beyond the blockbuster crowd-pleasers. I would like to hear the results.

I didn't realize Nixon was a horror film with child vampires. :P

Seriously though, Let Me In definitely has its moments, and I'd like to hear more of his horror sound too. But again, I'd like to see what Giacchino could do with grandiose drama.

EDIT: Way to make me look redundant, K.K.!

I just meant Let Me In was an intimate score, not a crowdpleaser score.

I agree he has not really done any straight up drama scoring yet. Would be nice if he found one to do while he brewed the Star Trek 12 score in the back of his mind. The drama score in the forefront could end up influencing the later sci fi blockbuster score in a positive way
