Donnelly24 0 Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 Lets say you were asked to conduct a major symphony orchestra and you were able to freely choose the program? How would you theme your concert and what would the program consist of? And which orchestra would you want to conduct? Also, name a soloist who you would like to apear...
Ren 77 Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 ooo, nice thread let me think about this one seriously.
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 Only one concert? Can't it be a whole cycle or something?Marian - who'd plan a cycle of film music concerts, each one focussing on one or two composers.
Donnelly24 0 Posted March 9, 2004 Author Posted March 9, 2004 If my concert was a strictly classical program, it would go as follows...Carnegie Hall, 8:00 PMThe New York Philharmonic conducted by SEAN DONNELLYRenee Fleeming, sopranoItzhak Perlman, violinCONCERT PROGRAM: * BIZET: Suite from Carmen * ORFF: Selections from Carmina Burana * STRAVINSKY: Rite of Spring * VIVALDI: Four Seasons * ROSSINI: William Tell OvertureEach soloist would have an encore....Renee Fleemings encore would be "Manon: Obeissons Quand Leur Voix Appelle, Act 3" and Itzhak Perlmans encore would be "Rimsky-Korsakov: Flight of the Bumblebee"I'm still thinking about how to program a concert as if it was performed by the Boston Pops....
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 I would do a film music concert, probably mostly Williams . . . but I'll have to really think about what I'd perform.Ray Barnsbury
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 Oh, if we're conducting any kind of music, it surely would have to be a Bruckner symphony.Marian - stating the obvious. :spiny: Gattaca (Michael Nyman)

It's an excellent piece, it turned me onto Bernstein and reminds me of Williams. Ray Barnsbury

Donnelly24 0 Posted March 10, 2004 Author Posted March 10, 2004 Am I the only one who would do a NON film score concert?
A24 5,155 Posted March 10, 2004 Posted March 10, 2004 I would choose 'Soundings' and while I'm at it I'd hire Simon Rhodes to do a recording of it.The second piece would be Dmitri Shostakovich's 'Violin Concerto N°1' with some hot she-player on the violin.----------------Alex Cremers

Donnelly24 0 Posted March 10, 2004 Author Posted March 10, 2004 Sorry...I was just saying that because everyone went with film music as a theme for the concert
Lurker 5 Posted March 10, 2004 Posted March 10, 2004 Sorry...I was just saying that because everyone went with film music as a theme for the concertHow dare they do that at a board almost entirely devoted to film music!Neil - who wants to hear more film music performed at concerts
Beowulf 4 Posted March 10, 2004 Posted March 10, 2004 I'm gonna cheat and say I would do a 3-day festival with a different theme on each day. Donnelly24 0 Posted March 11, 2004 Author Posted March 11, 2004 Andrea and Renee on the same bill, insane but I would pay LOTS to see THAT!!! Incredable festival, nice choices! And good idea to mix everything...go for one more day and make it a broadway/patriotic day.
Morn 8 Posted March 11, 2004 Posted March 11, 2004 Mainly golden age film music, lots of North, Herrmann, Korngold, Rozsa, Waxman etc etc.
Ren 77 Posted March 11, 2004 Posted March 11, 2004 I love Finandia.I could play Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 2 for someone's concert
Donnelly24 0 Posted March 11, 2004 Author Posted March 11, 2004 I could play Mozarts Clarinet Concerto for a someone, but yea, doesn't look like that would make it into anyones repitoir...
Docteur Qui 1,581 Posted March 11, 2004 Posted March 11, 2004 How about:The John Williams Fan Network Orchestra:Performing - Various John Williams pieces...That would be cool, but do we have enough people and various instruments for an Orchestra? I play piano, but I'll learn the Timpani. Banging things + Making noise = fun.
Ren 77 Posted March 11, 2004 Posted March 11, 2004 i'm sure that why every child thinks being a drummer is cool. . . drummer=bad percussionist=good
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted March 11, 2004 Posted March 11, 2004 *Finlandia - Sibelius*Death and Transfiguration - Richard StraussOoh, two of my all-time favourite pieces. *The Lark Ascending - Vaughn-Williams (Featuring Sarah Chang)Very nice as well, but I'd have to pick the Tallis Fantasia instead.Marian - who'd like to have percussion. Donnelly24 0 Posted March 11, 2004 Author Posted March 11, 2004 Ralph Vaughn Williams...whats that Wedding one that he wrote?
Morlock 12 Posted March 11, 2004 Posted March 11, 2004 A bit off topic, but I just came back from the greatest concert I've ever been in. It was Bach Brandenburg Concerto no. 3, Mozart's 40th, and Beethoven's 5th. I'd never heard the 5th before in concert, and it was one of the most magnificent things I've ever heard, played perfectly. I'm still a bit tipsy from it (and the Jack Daniels at the bar, of course). In the next few weeks I'm also seeing Brahms' violin concerto, Elgar's cello concerto, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Mendelsohnn's violin concerto, Mozart's Don Giovani and Marriage of Figaro, Rossini's Barber of Seville, and Cavellaria Rusticana. This year, my local philharmonics have done an outstanding job choosing them. I'd personaly do longer concert, with Beethoven's 5th, 6th and 9th, and with Dvorak's 9th. My favorite symphonies in the world.
Morlock 12 Posted March 11, 2004 Posted March 11, 2004 Who did you see perform Morlock? (Why the highlighted name?) I saw the Jerusalem Phillharmonics, an absolutely amazing orchestra. I saw Zubin Mehta and Lalo Schifrin there last year too.
Donnelly24 0 Posted March 12, 2004 Author Posted March 12, 2004 Where does the Israel Philharmonic station in Israel...are they in Jerusalem?
Morlock 12 Posted March 12, 2004 Posted March 12, 2004 I believe the national phillharmonics (Conducted by Zubin Mehta) are in Tel Aviv.
djc242 0 Posted March 12, 2004 Posted March 12, 2004 I would do an evening of American composers: L. Bernstein Overture to Candide J. Adams Shaker Loops J. Williams American Journey (narrators TBA) - intermission - C. Ives The Unanswered Question A. Copland Sym. No. 3
