Lets say you were asked to conduct a major symphony orchestra and you were able to freely choose the program? How would you theme your concert and what would the program consist of? And which orchestra would you want to conduct? Also, name a soloist who you would like to apear...

Only one concert? Can't it be a whole cycle or something?

Marian - who'd plan a cycle of film music concerts, each one focussing on one or two composers.

If my concert was a strictly classical program, it would go as follows...

Carnegie Hall, 8:00 PM
The New York Philharmonic conducted by SEAN DONNELLY
Renee Fleeming, soprano
Itzhak Perlman, violin

CONCERT PROGRAM:

* BIZET: Suite from Carmen
* ORFF: Selections from Carmina Burana
* STRAVINSKY: Rite of Spring
* VIVALDI: Four Seasons
* ROSSINI: William Tell Overture

Each soloist would have an encore....Renee Fleemings encore would be "Manon: Obeissons Quand Leur Voix Appelle, Act 3" and Itzhak Perlmans encore would be "Rimsky-Korsakov: Flight of the Bumblebee"

I'm still thinking about how to program a concert as if it was performed by the Boston Pops....

I would do a film music concert, probably mostly Williams . . . but I'll have to really think about what I'd perform.

Oh, if we're conducting any kind of music, it surely would have to be a Bruckner symphony.

That would be very cool, maybe we'll hear it in May. It's an excellent piece, it turned me onto Bernstein and reminds me of Williams.

I would choose 'Soundings' and while I'm at it I'd hire Simon Rhodes to do a recording of it.
The second piece would be Dmitri Shostakovich's 'Violin Concerto N°1' with some hot she-player on the violin.

That would be cool, but do we have enough people and various instruments for an Orchestra? I play piano, but I'll learn the Timpani. Banging things + Making noise = fun.

A bit off topic, but I just came back from the greatest concert I've ever been in. It was Bach Brandenburg Concerto no. 3, Mozart's 40th, and Beethoven's 5th. I'd never heard the 5th before in concert, and it was one of the most magnificent things I've ever heard, played perfectly. I'm still a bit tipsy from it (and the Jack Daniels at the bar, of course). In the next few weeks I'm also seeing Brahms' violin concerto, Elgar's cello concerto, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Mendelsohnn's violin concerto, Mozart's Don Giovani and Marriage of Figaro, Rossini's Barber of Seville, and Cavellaria Rusticana. This year, my local philharmonics have done an outstanding job choosing them.

I'd personaly do longer concert, with Beethoven's 5th, 6th and 9th, and with Dvorak's 9th. My favorite symphonies in the world.

(Why the highlighted name?)

I saw the Jerusalem Phillharmonics, an absolutely amazing orchestra. I saw Zubin Mehta and Lalo Schifrin there last year too.
I should be resisting this, but I'm paralyzed with rage... and island rhythms.
