The Happy New Year Thread

01 January 2003 - 03:27 PM

Okay, since it's New Year, I thought, hell, let's have a thread with dozens of posts all of them saying the same Happy New Year stuff. It's only once a year!

Let me begin with:

I'll post my New Year resolutions later. But you're welcome to do it now!

Superman: The Movie -- 24th Anniversary

15 December 2002 - 04:13 PM

. . . .And so, 24 years ago today, December 15, 1978, a movie called Superman: The Movie was released. And John Williams ensured himself a new place in Movie Music History.

Now, I'm not a big fan of the movie.  But if 24 years ago Superman hadn't been released, or at least the score hadn't been made -- I'll admit it -- we'd have even less magic sparks behind our ears.

-ROSS, who saw that movie for the first time at 11 and immediately after that bough the score.

My So-Called Christmas

08 December 2002 - 11:21 PM

I've never been a fan of writing personal posts, but I feel I need to let this out of my system.

You see, I'm not having a Christmas this year. Some of you know that I'm living in Spain because of my father's job. My stay here is undefined, but I have been here for 5 (almost 6) years now and I've come to understand and appreciate in a sense the Spanish way.

Well, usually, we (my parents, my sister, and I) go back to America for Christmas. We celebrate Christmas night just us alone and then invite my mom's side of the family and the celebrate. And we spend the rest of our stay in American with my dad's side of the family. I love every minute of it. I am the most Christmas guy you'll every see. I spend hours buying presents for everyone (most them I give away to charities) and wrap them up and write riddles for the recipent. We didn't do Christmas this way in 1999 and it was hell, as we celebrated in a spanish friend's house which was very -- unchristmas-y for me. I hate that noisy, hot, loud Christmas. I hated it, and was very sad until February.

Well this year, my Jewish grandma (my dad's mom), who hates Christmas because it's become too commercial, and who celebrates Hannukah, is coming over to Spain. She is happy of not having to go through the American Christmas. Therefore, on Dec.23 we will pack our bags and go to a hotel in North and pretend there never was a Christmas on year 2002.

My parents call me selfish for not wanting to do it that way, but what can I do? Could any of you go thought it.

The point is I feel depressed everytime I see anything that remembers me of Christmas. Which is very hard to avoid in any civilized country this time of year.

-ROSS, dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones he used to know . . .

Hilarious

27 November 2002 - 10:04 PM

I just bought a €6 DVD-R copy of Minority Report (with both the discs, actually) and, the credits in the cover are hilarious.

These are the credits that really are in this DVD-R cover:

Directed by STEWEN SPIELBERG
Starring [all actors names are correct]
Cinematographer by JANUSZ WILLIAMS
Music by JOHN WILLIAMS
Visual Effects BLONDEL AIDOO
Costumer Designer DEBORAH LYNN SCOTT
Film Editing by MICHAEL KAHN (I)
Casting by DENISE CHAPMAN
Written by JON COHEN  SCOTT FRANK
Stunt JOHN ASHKER  JAKE BRAKE  RICHARD BUCHER
Sound Department KAREN BENNET  RON JUDKINDS STUAR McCOWAN      DEE SELBY
Produced by GERALD R. MOLEN  BONNIE CURTIES  WALTER F. PARKES

I don't how many of these are accurate, but I can tell you this: there's not a single typo in this post, all names are as seen in that fake cover.

-ROSS, laughing is as LOL s off with that cover, it was worth the €6 alone.

Williams again on "Give Me a Break"

25 November 2002 - 09:05 PM

Just in case somebody missed the thousands of Williams references I've posted here, I'll explain what Give Me a Break is. It's an amateur sitcom I've been writing with some friends, going through 9 seasons of scripts. Since I'm one of the three main writers (and the only show creator), I throw thousands of obscure Williams references, although my favorite field is Broadway. I like to have my six high school characters referring to Jerry Goldsmith, Tim Rice or Andrew Lloyd Webber, unbelivable as it may be.

Well, in one of the opening episodes of our last season, the ninth (that's 220 scripts right there), two characters argue about the ability of Spielberg to tell stories.

DEAN: Just where is the big deal? A boy meets an alien. Geez, I've seen the same story on 'Maury'!

IAN: Yes, but they didn't have John Williams.

DEAN: Who?

IAN (deadpan): The guy who made the voice.

Okay, not very funny, but that's because we're running out of fun ideas. That's why we're ending the show this july!

-ROSS, remembering his favorite quote:

IAN (sarcastic): Gee, I grow a pimple in my head and suddenly "Ave Satanis" becomes my anthem.
