  1. They did the two Williams pieces a few years back, ending the concert with Beethoven's 4th Symphony. That coupling must have been something wonderful to enjoy. Can't get much better than two masters of their own time performed side by side.
  2. It's rather rare I have a day when I don't listen to any Williams at all. But it does happen. At work, whenever possible, I listen to music with headphones. The time I spent at the headmistress office, that is, during classes I obviously can't do that. It's just half the attention to the music, but I discovered I'm able to do much more burocratic work that way. At home I listen mostly at night, with my Senheiser top grade headphones. During the weekend, I do listen on my hi-fi system. But besides Williams, I hardly listen to any film music. Mostly classical music and some jazz now and then. And even with Williams, I think I spend more time with his concert output than with his film scores.
  3. I've had that release for a few years now thanks to endless kindness of @thx99 and strongly recommend everyone to get the Naxos reissue. Actually I have wondered if this would eventually get released on the Altissimo label, specialized in reissuing many of these military bands promos. But since they now operate under Naxos, I can see how this one ended up released on the main label. And by the way, I was the one who added it to the Discogs database, linked earlier on the thread.
  4. I should rephrase. He made arrangements to the orchestration to better fit the hall acustics in Cincinnati. Minor tweaks from what I understood. Probably he did the same when he conducted it at Tanglewood.
  5. She's probably referring to a section of the arrangement on the Across the Stars album.
  6. I listen to it at least once a month. It's among my all time favourite Williams pieces.
  7. There is a commercial recording, a live one with Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, available on a Blu-ray.
  8. I very much prefer Gould's later and slower recording of Bach's Goldberg. Can't remember right now about the performers, but I have two versions of Fauré's Requiem. One is on Naxos, the other on DG, the latter being much slower, and again, it's may favourite one. And while Bernstein might not be the best conductor of Elgar, as far as I'm concerned, no one beats him on the hyper famous Nimrod, taking it tremendously slower than any other of the recordings I've heard of (and I've heard a lot of them... Baremboim, for example, who recorded quite some Elgar stuff, takes it quite too fast, to the point that the orchestra, the London Philharmonic, seems to have some difficulty in keeping up with the fast pace).
  9. I'm partial to slower tempos, so it's Vienna all the way for me.
  10. This actually seems to be a transcription. The original piece is for brass and percussion alone. The Bulla arrangement was included on an album by the New England Brass Ensemble, conducted by Bulla himself. The album also includes a piece by Bulla that draws heavy inspiration from Williams' Jaws 2. I got the CD directly from them and they were kind enough to include a thank you note from Bulla with the first page of his own piece. The piece was also recorded on the 2-CD set by US Coast Guard Band, even though that was a promotional issue that they kindly sent me. There are also a couple more recordings on the Mark Records label, though those seem to mostly be released only digitally. One is by the DePauw University Band and the other by The United States Air Force Band Chamber Ensembles.
  11. The first time the suite was performed was at Tanglewood in 2011. Stargazers was first performed as a farewell piece for Ann Hobson Pilot during the Boston Pops 2009 season.
  12. The suite is in three movements: I. Three Million Light Years from Home II. Stargazers III. Adventures on Earth (or optionally, Flying Theme)
  13. Nope. Added to my wantlist... now just need to find it!
