This anti-Americanism has been an element for many years, long before the guy from The Apprentice managed to get under these guys’ skin. I first noticed it over a decade ago. If you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of foreigners who post on this forum about an American composer who composes scores primarily for American films, and many of them are European. They carry a chip on their shoulder that is more obvious than OJ’s guilt, and they can’t help but lash out against American culture despite being absolutely obsessed with it, lapping up our movies, TV, video games, music and fashion, and also simultaneously being laser-focus obsessed with random congresspeople from districts most people here have never even heard of. They are completely obsessed with American politics. Meanwhile, we don’t care about their representatives in any respect. It’s a bit weird, isn’t it? It sure is! I think they just need Bass Pro Shops out there.

What a great release. Intrada have been really delivering the goods in my opinion. There’s an occasional good LLL release these days and media puff pieces, but Intrada is just rocking the shit, without the promos and in the wake of their fallen founder. I’m going there, this is my preferred label in this modern more sophisticated era. All the best stuff is made Intrada.

There is a Break the Glass scenario. GL figured out how to keep that franchise going without any new movies before the sale. When interest in the coveted vintage doll line waned in the good old 1980s, they just pulled the plug on the whole thing. In later years they kept the merchandise profitable after creating demand with a merchandising drought and then again after flooding the market by the 2000s. Prequels were a success and somehow original Lucasfilm managed to turn record profits with merchandise in the years before the sale, although there’s this false narrative being passed around that GL was like bankrupting his studio because of a couple of cartoon movies. Not sure what Disney’s angle is, but it doesn’t seem to be working.

Modern Lucasfilm is like the White Star Line. Afflicted by various disasters after spending way too much money on enormous synergistic projects, a seemingly inhospitable economic climate and a President everyone despises that rows away in a lifeboat after making reckless bad decisions leading to said disasters. At some point they’ll have to just merge with Star Trek and fulfill their destiny.

I’m not saying he’s a great father during the events of the movie. The batting average of Spielbergian Fathers is like the Mendoza Line, even though we know he really had Mommy Issues based on the odd biopic of himself he made but changed the names like Dragnet. So what. He’s a villain because he got called to work and had a close encounter that made him obsessed with potato mountains and filling the house with dirt? His erratic behavior was clearly out of his control to some extent. He let ‘em watch The Ten Commandments!

I do truly believe this about Keys and E.T. but I’m also busting chops ever so slightly because I’ve stumbled upon people parroting the terrible “modern” (circa 1998?) Spielberg interpretation of Close Encounters that Roy Neary is a deadbeat Father. It just seems like even the director at some point was watching a different movie than the rest of us who don’t see it that way. The entire movie post Roy’s encounter shows how he and others have been deeply affected and been instilled with an inexplicable obsession with the mountain, which culminates in the arrival of the mothership, which of course he would board. It was a fixation that was completely out of his control after the first encounter and really the whole point of the movie. You guys would prefer it to end with him waving goodbye to the mothership and going, “Oh shit. I got to clean all that dirt out of the house.”

It’s the way I’ve always interpreted the line since I watched the movie in the late 80s. My interpretation has never changed. One example where it did is in Jurassic Park when John Hammond says Dennis Nedry has butterfingers and I originally thought he was referring to the Butterfingers candy bar, which would sort of make sense because he’s a fat guy who likes junk food.

Who metaphorically tells a child with an alien after sharing a moment with the alien that the alien came to him too? There’s no metaphor there. It’s a direct claim. You guys must also think that Elliot’s dad isn’t in “Mexico with Sally”. It’s a metaphor.

It’s not like that at all
