ROTS Alternates
28 February 2006 - 05:09 AM
BOYS INTO BATTLE: The album version of this (1:16-3:15) is actually an alternate of the film version, as it is without the bass drum accompaniment that appears in the film.
THE ELEVATOR SCENE: Another version that contains more percussion in the beginning. Possibly more of an alternate take than a full-fledged alternate. Thoughts?
MOVING THINGS ALONG (ENTER LORD VADER): The alternate appears on the album. The film version contains heavier percussion, particularly for Anakin's arrival on Mustafar. Also of note is a timpani roll before the Imperial March statement.
THE BIRTH OF THE TWINS: Although it's never been really revealed or heard of, the description given in the score reports suggest that another version was recorded. To quote: "As babies are handed to people, in another location ‘the helmet’ descends o nto Anakin’s broken face, to just o ne chord (minor of course) which builds from p to a deafening fff and back down again." There is a soft statement of Luke's Theme when he is born, followed by the Force Theme. Tears reportedly flowed when this cue was played.
END TITLE: Like Birth of the Twins, unheard of, but reportedly recorded in the report: “End Credits”, 7M8. A full new End Credits suite, featuring the classic Luke’s Theme/Rebel Fanfare start, then a gliding harp starts off Leia’s Theme. This segues into the new “Revenge of the Sith” theme, followed by a concert presentation of the Throne Room motif from ANH, and a reprise of Leia’s Theme as the now-traditional prequel soft fadeout. Described as highly emotional with some tears flowing during recording.
Any I'm forgetting?
Superman II: "I cannot work with this man."
08 February 2006 - 06:07 AM
The sequel lost one more participant from the original - conductor John Williams whose original score was adapted for "Superman II" by Ken Thorne. Salkind recalled that Williams was set to return until an unfortunate happenstance. "John Williams came to London, we paid [for] the trip. He saw the [second] film. I made a mistake. I let him alone with Lester in the screening room and somehow Lester and him did not hit it off at all. At the end of the screening, John said 'Ilya can I speak to you?' He said 'Look I cannot work with this man.' That was it."
Wow. I wonder what Lester did.

--With the exception of 6 categories, everything that won was either a personal pick or prediction. Hee.
--The Terminator theme was used not once, not twice, but three times by the orchestra over the course of the show. I had no idea Bill Conti was such a fan.
--Scorsese screwed again. BAH.
--Spider-Man 2 won for visual effects! Score!
--Anyone else think Jamie Foxx was a bit confused when RAY won for best sound mixing? The look on his face just said, "Umm, hey guys, did we just win for something?"
--Since Cate won, this technically means that Katherine Hepburn now has a record five oscar wins.
--Chris Rock, while not as charming or entertaining as say, Billy Crystal or Johnny Carson, did a fairly good job. I liked him.
--Thank God Eternal Sunshine won. If it hadn't, I might've been forced to give up film.
--Hilary Swank just HAD to win for Million Dollar Baby. "I don't know what I did in life to deserve all this." Neither do we, Hilary. Now go away.
--Morgan finally got an Oscar. Woo-hoo Morgan!
--The score category sadly proceded as I predicted. Oh well.
--Unfair or not, but I am just sick of Clint Eastwood. I don't really care how good Million Dollar Baby is. I would just much rather have seen Sideways or Ray win instead. And his Lord of the Rings comment from last year? *smack*
And there you have it.
Could the original "Jedi" have worked?
06 February 2005 - 12:13 AM
I just re-read both Gary Kurtz interviews (one at filmforce and another elsewhere that escapes me), in which he delves into some of the original details that were planned for Return of the Jedi following Empire before he left his spot as producer of the films. Such plot details include...
- Sticking to the original plan of nine films.
- Killing Han Solo.
- No new Death Star.
- Having Leia wind up becoming Queen of whatever remained left of the galaxy.
- Making the Luke/Vader conflict revolve around the idea of Vader luring Luke to join him in an attempt to overthrow the Emperor.
- No Ewoks.
- Leia not being Luke's sister and making her someone else in the galaxy whom we would see in the next trilogy.
- The Emperor would not appear until Episode IX.
Others that have been mentioned as well include...
- Luke and Vader's final battle taking place on Coruscant, due to no Death Star.
- Due to no Ewoks, Wookees would be used instead.
- Lando would die in the Millenium Falcon as it was blown up, along with all aboard.
Man, if some of this had happened...I think it would've been great. Much more in tone with Empire before it, and it sets up for the final trilogy.
I don't know if an entire new trilogy based solely on Luke without the other main characters would've worked, but if Kurtz had remained on and Lucas stepped aside some more...man who knows what we could've gotten.
Thoughts?
