  1. I'm reminded of this quote: “I’m always looking for something that will bring the best out of me, and that I can give more to. It’s not always the best pictures. Sometimes a lesser one will offer me more opportunities” - John Williams, 1978. I've taken it from Tim Greiving's book, but it's a quote from a Colin Vaines-article. Anyway, my point is: Spielberg's pictures basically always deliver good opportunities for music. Even the 'lesser' ones.
  2. I'm just talking about the plan back in 2011 - like this Spielberg interview from december 2011: Or later in december 2012 when Jackson said his plan was to shoot the performance capture "some point next year for a 2015 release date". My point really was just that the box office wasn't what was holding the sequel back - Jackson's schedule was. Then of course he lost his friend and collaborator Andrew Lesnie in 2015 and with him also lost the desire to make 'drama' films with a new DP. He instead directed the amazing They Shall Not Grow Old and Get Back documentaries!
  3. The movie did enough financially to start pre-production on a sequel back in 2011, it's only because Peter Jackson instead chose to direct the Hobbit(s) instead that it wasn't made immediately. It's pretty impossible (or meaningless) to scrutinize box office and budget numbers, I honestly don't know why the Hollywood trades spend so much time writing about them. Budgets are often artificially inflated and so are marketing budgets. There's a reason "Hollywood accounting" has its own wikipedia page.
  4. Actually it did well both critically and financially worldwide.
  5. I'm a Tintin fan, so this is great news. I'm an even bigger John Williams fan, though, so I'm sad it took so long.
  6. I think you're referring to Morricone's Cinema Paradiso?
  7. This was my first thought as well!! Couldn’t @Maestro let him know that his fans desperately need a new album with recent pieces and fanfares - conducted or overseen by him? It’s rare for him to do such an album unless there’s a specific musician attached, though. Either way - and I say this every time - I just can’t believe we’re still living at a moment in history where new John Williams compositions are being performed/released! It’s unbelievable and I don’t take it for granted!
  8. It's interesting that @Maurizio commented on the connection between this score and Bernstein some nine years ago in this very thread. Now Levinson kinda confirms it (well, again - Levinson also talks about it in @Maestro's amazing biography, of course).
  9. Small mention of Williams by director Barry Levinson in the recent Hollywood Reporter article "‘Sleepers’ at 30: Director Barry Levinson Is Still Perplexed by the Film’s Controversy":
  10. To me it sounds like you had very unrealistic expectations of how footage of a 91 year old man should look.
  11. I was at one of these concerts and I swear the conductor was humming loudly along to some of the pieces, very audible on the Jaws theme and Raider's March. It was very strange - maybe he didn't do it every night. Haven't heard the CD yet. I liked the program overall and the host gave very good context to all of the pieces (so even casual fans could follow, haha).
  12. That's a very good point. Hard to know exactly without more context!
  13. From Variety! Man, I think it sounds great, I hope it gets off the ground!
  14. I personally don't think Spielberg would retire from making movies without Williams - but both of those went into production with Williams attached to score them. Health and The Post got in the way.
