Overture to the Oscars (new JW composition)
handz replied to Sunshine Reger's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Wish I had, this piece is amazing, way more 80s Williams than Galaxy's Edge, I would not even compare this to Galaxys edge at all. But yeah, where are some official high-res audio of it? :( -
Sorry but no. Most symphonies are prime example of composers will to do something great without any limits. They may have been funded by rich people of the time, but the sponsors usually didn’t set them any creative boundaries. Classical music is almost always expression of authors will to do music as close to his vision as possible yes there are some exceptions, church music, music made for the current regime as a must…but that is not the point. you can’t really compare standalone composition with music which is dictated by movie cuts. yes movie music can use best of the classical music approaches and have amazing themes. But in the end - even music from JW - most played on concert staged is not directly from movies it is special concert version.

Guardian Article about JW

Maybe not absolute. But film music is always serving the movie it is not authors “free will”.
-
So John is getting senile 😶🌫️😀 no seriously, I found this article weird. He spent whole life composing film music, making concerts of film music and now this… I love classical. I listen it all the time. But movie music can give you something that classical not always delivers- pure excitement from all the crazy mood changes, wild orchestration and not that sometimes predictable developement. of course it is inferior genre in therms of it is limited to what movie dictates. You have no freedom when composing it. But the power of JW lies in the themes. The melodies. And these rival any best classical music motifs ever. I dont know… lets see for that book😀

Seriously you still going to protect them for acting like this ? nobody cares who cancelled, concerts are not happening as they were announced and they wanted to keep the customers money. Astounding and shameful. -

Horn counter melodies are some of the best things in any music and especially film music - always makes me feel emotional. And yeah, JW knows how to do this well. wow need to revisit this score. I am always fed up with the famous March....

I love how the dumbing down of the population and the decline in quality are always justified with phrases like “more relevant and modern for today’s audiences.” :-/ A post-Romantic orchestral sound with occasional touches of synth or electric guitar is really all you need. Or you can go full Zimmer - his style definitely works in films, though I usually don’t find it musically strong on its own (especially his recent, more sound-design-oriented work, though some pieces from Dune were amazing). Absolutely. I am so full of that "Goransson" appreciation, it was ok for what it was but was it good enough to stand next to "classic" SW music? Not at all... But people nowadays are like this sadly. Oh this is "different" so it is better!!

Your way of thinking is completely off here. It’s like discussing business with someone who’s never run one. This is a basic customer–service provider issue: the promised service wasn’t delivered, yet you’re keeping the money? That’s not okay. The concert was explicitly advertised as being conducted by John Williams. That was the main draw. There’s no argument against that. Once again (for the hundredth time): this is not the audience’s fault. If a high-profile performer can’t attend, that’s unfortunate, but understandable. No one is angry about that, just disappointed. The issue is that tickets were sold at a premium price based on his participation. In that case, it would only be fair to offer refunds to those who understandably no longer want to attend, now that the star is not performing. Everyone who bought tickets to see John Williams conduct is being ripped off. And the fact that BPO hasn’t publicly announced the change suggests they know it’s unfair and are deliberately avoiding public attention. And your post was Cry baby or Spam? Because it is most certainly not about JW And well this thread was about JW conducting in Berlin which is not happening and all around it. It still pretty much topic. I am also not happy to use the word scam and BPO in one sentence but so far they handling of this is sadly in an awful way. They are very persistent to keep all the extra money for some reason. Not funny as BPO did not PUBLICLY announced this anywhere, some poor people may still think JW is being in Berlin and buy expensive tickets (I almost did the same). -

Your blind and absolutely unnecessary advocacy of this BPOS scam-like behavior is truly alarming. The concert, as promised, is not happening. The vast majority of people bought expensive tickets to see JW - not just to hear his music being played. The organizer’s refusal to refund customers when the main star is not performing is absolutely unacceptable. Failing to make a public announcement about it further proves that they’re trying to prevent the public from noticing this blatant scam. It would cost them nothing to refund people who no longer wish to attend the concert without JW - others could still buy those tickets at a reduced price. Please accept this fact and stop making a fool of yourself... -

Honestly such big errors are rare even on live classical concerts. What is a big mistake is to await live performance of Film music sound like on the recording as recording are heavily mixed, miked in special way etc. Jurassic Park is famous for that for example. -

Man… it’s 2025. Prestigious orchestras have been playing film music for years now. It’s not some WOW new-era thing anymore. I don’t care if he’s the best conductor of his own works right now, you’re completely missing the point. Are 70–80-year-old rock stars the best singers or guitar players? Hell no. There are younger people who sing and play better today. But would I go to a revival band or the original? Of course the original. These kinds of concerts aren’t just about quality, they’re about the experience. And I’d even say that the experience is the main thing here. Yes, I’m obviously talking about the experience of seeing the legend conduct his own music. That’s the whole point. Seeing the BPO? That’s not rare. You can get tickets to see them any time, and for much cheaper. And no, you’re mistaken. The concert was billed as “John Williams conducts John Williams”, not “John Williams conducts the BPO” or “The BPO plays John Williams”. Clear and simple. Seriously? You meant this utter nonsense seriously? You cannot put this kind of risk on the customers. This is absolutely immoral and borderline scam behavior. You promised a specific experience and sold expensive tickets based on it, knowing that people would travel from all over the world for this unique event. Now you’re not going to keep that promise? You should refund everyone who bought a ticket for this experience. Nobody is obliged to do their own research about a performer’s health or availability. And just because someone is willing to travel for this doesn’t mean they should be expected to investigate it beforehand. It’s the organizer’s responsibility, always. If there’s a chance the concert might not happen as announced, that should be made clear from the beginning. Stop defending their awful handling of this situation. To this date, there is still no public statement on their website or social media about the change of program or his absence! That is completely unacceptable and clearly meant to keep the wider public from finding out. Outrageous. Absolutely outrageous. I honestly find it bizarre that we are still discussing this. This was about seeing John Williams, not just hearing the BPO play his music without him. Howgh.
