Sorry I think there's been a misunderstanding; I was referring to everything that happens before Roy successfully making it to the landing site event, where he finally becomes at ease. But he is clearly very tormented throughout the film prior to that, or after being imprinted with the images, rather.

In the most recent interviews with Spielberg on Disclosure Day junkets, he now speaks more open-ended about Neary's decision to leave, as if he's picked up on some of the controversy surrounding his previous remarks made in the early 2000s where he was much more forthright about how he would have changed the script. Perhaps Spielberg momentarily forgot that Roy was completely obsessed after all.
