  1. I'll once again point to the entire Moria sequence here. Many of the highlights from FotR are to be found there, played deftly by the NZSO. I don't think there's anything to worry about. What might bother me more than any difference in ensemble is the difference in engineers - AUJ had a very close, over-produced kind of sound compared to the original scores. I want that more "archaic" sound that Shore talks about in Doug's book back.

  3. Doesn't totally belong in here but it's a cool slightly related rumour. I hope it's true! http://makingstarwars.net/2013/10/rumor-john-williams-writing-star-wars-rebels-theme/

  4. Well, he does know the Ring and Menace/Pity themes

  5. And still denied now when talking about the score for DOS! We want the truth! Toil, suffering, hurt feelings, melodrama, fights, tears, sweat and blood!

  6. Now we at least know that major last minute rescores took place. Explains some odd choices.

  7. Wow, all those extended scenes sound great! Wish we got that on our flight to Cali instead of After Earth....

  8. I second that sound issue, some more LotR resemblance would be nice.

  10. Does that mean he's the equal of Miley, now? Can we expect Williams to do some twerking?

  11. I would say only time will tell if the NZSO will sound different to LPO performing this music (well of course they do as they are a different orchestra but is it too noticeable or to the detriment of the Middle Earth sound). LPO is Shore's favourite orchestra and longest orchestra collaboration no doubt and he does know them and their strengths and weaknesses very well but with him doing the orchestration (I am rather convinced Pope is just doing some assisting and conducting) and supervising the sessions I am quite confident that the sound of Middle Earth will be intact.

  13. I've received my copy of Black Beauty as well. I've already listened to it twice and I have to say it's a lovely score.

  16. Textbook presentation of the superiority of the Maestro's theme. That cue from Man of Steel is a theme for Epicman, not Superman. In other words, it's absolutely no fun. Imagine if the order of the themes had been reversed. Zimmer's cosmic pounding would sound ridiculous and pompous over the likes of Bizarro and Turtle Man, but Williams' would sound just fine in either place. Alas, that these evil days should be mine... Nice to see what at least looked like genuine 2D animation in places, though!

  17. That would be "Pops Britannia". It contains the 3-movent suite Williams prepared in late 1979/early 1980 for his Boston Pops debut concert.

  18. There were fears he is not well, I am pleased he is doing well. It was never suggested he was ill! You're the one who came up with that theory! You're the one to blame!

  19. Hmmm. the first thing that comes in my mind is that Goldsmith frequently uses synths even for themes while Williams rarely does..
