  2. Got lots of great pictures of the La-la Land office today and all of us together but can't post them until we get home cause they are on the real camera and not my phone. I met MV and Matt from LLL, Neil Bulk, Mike Matessino, Joe Kraemer, Mike Joffey, Katherine (not sure what her FSM name is), and even kind of sort of met Ford A Thaxton! Everybody was super nice and the LLL office is awesome, full of collectibles and signed paraphernalia. Relaxing a bit now before heading to Christopher Young's house!

  5. So, if let's say the Smurfs Movie makes a hit among the audience and all people around the world love it, that makes it one of the greatest films of all time? or if the songs of Lady Gaga appeal to a wide audience, that means that as compositions they can stand next to a Beethoven or a Mozart symphony? my point is: the value and greatness of a work of art, is not defined by the appeal to the general masses. or the connection as you put it. If only a handful of people can connect to 2001: A Space Odyssey, that doesn't lessen its importance and value. When did I say anything about appeal? I said the connection between the artist and the audience. I mean this quite literally. An artist creates the art, the audience then consumes it. There is a direct line drawn between the two. What I feel when I listen to a piece of music or watch a film is exclusive to me. I am the one that qualifies the work based on my own personal experience with it. Therefore making someone elses own criteria for qualifying the same type of art completely irrelevant. It's all about taste. Someone could love Uwe Bol enough to fund his next movie on Kickstarter, which people have, but that doesn't mean anything to me. I think he's one of the worst filmmakers ever.

  6. Enescu isn't all that well known, except for his Romanian Rhapsodies Here is his Symphony No. 3. I'll throw a shorter piece in here. Ravel's "Le jardin féerique" from his Ma mère l'oye (Mother Goose) suite

  8. The final verdict: citizen Koray Savas does not care about the scholars, the scholars do not care about Koray Savas. Good that we have settled this then.

  9. Then we will all rejoice that the exciting complete score to POSEIDON ADVENTURE is released a third time.

  10. Not really. It's just a traditional precedent that some choose to follow for no real apparent reason, much like other things in human society. No, a collective opinion of your cultural scholars does not matter to me. When it comes to art, the only thing that matters is the connection between the artist and the audience.

  11. Well, I certainly did back in my day, if that means anything. Fortunately, the flora of academic film music literature has blossomed in recent years. One of the courses I taught at the time was media criticism, which includes a way to set criteria for any artwork. Of course, even such general criteria are tinged with a sense of subjectivity. It's impossible to avoid that in art criticism. That's one of the reasons why I love humanistic sciences over the 'hard' sciences. But the dichotomy between objectivity and subjectivity will always be a 'hot topic', as evidenced above.

  13. Agreed, very fine Yet here you are on a film music message board! Music should be all kinds of things, not just calm and noble. Bach recognized that.

  14. Last night I met Koray's brother Kaya, Dan Schweiger, Peter Hackman, and Christopher Young, who signed my Man Who Knew Too Little and Drag Me To Hell CDs, and also told me stories about Bill Murray and John Williams.

  15. If you try to connect the dots, given some recent comments on the late recording sessions last year, you might arrive at the conclusion it is probably better if Howard Shore gets more time for the actual writing. That can only be a good thing. Karol

  17. Me, like many of us it appears, enjoyed "By Request" as a nice little John Williams Starter Album. I bought "Jurassic Park" when if first came out, but before I began spending money on other score CDs I bought this compilation. That cemented my fascination.

  18. Nice article. But Pope directing something to be erased from the performers' parts? Fear, fire, foes, it's true! He's hijacking the score!

  20. Yeah. It was also good to finally hear Jackson and the music crew admit that there were definite problems with the scoring process last year. Its funny considering how much it was denied by the people involved in the production at the time.

  21. That would be "Pops Britannia". It contains the 3-movent suite Williams prepared in late 1979/early 1980 for his Boston Pops debut concert.
