  1. The point is that PJ must like the adrenaline pumps that come while editing the film one week before locking it for distribution. So a lot of his musical decisions could be avoided if he made up his mind when he should....

  3. "THO-RIN! DON'T-DO-THAT! (NO! NO!) THO-RIN! WATCH OU-OUT!" Well if the lyrics are different (and I think they are) then it isn't the same as tracking really because at least something of it is new. It's not like they just pasted in part of Weathertop. They did to an extent but they did something new with it! I'm waiting to hear the excuse before I dismiss it. Maybe it'll be a load of rubbish but I don't know where they're going with the changes so I'll wait an see. It isn't the first time that that music has played for someone who isn't a Ringwraith so I'm happy to wait and see. Writing new lyrics shouldn't suddenly give merit to that new instance. So what if its not tracking? It's just as wrong (even more so because they bothered to record old music, with some changes). The new lyrics aren't what impress me, its the new music that does that...and sadly that's not what we got. As for the excuse, as far as I know, the Ringwraith theme has only been used incorrectly once and that was in the FotR prologue. We never actually got an explanation for that, but it was fresh back then and the pros of the thematic integrity of the whole, far outweigh the cons. Just think about it. It isn't hard to come up with some obscure connection between the Ringwraiths, Thorin and Azog, but it'll be an excuse for excuse's sake. Because whatever explanation we end up getting (if we get one), there'll still be at least 10 other themes that could have worked much better contextually in that scene.

  6. Hello Guys !! i'm martyprod, the one who posted this video on youtube ! Hello Miguel (hey was up ? long time i have no more news from you !). first i want to thank Miguel to have allowed me to put on youtube a part of his collection. other part come from me and has been recorded on a german channel called Onyx in the 90's/2000's year and rom other source but lot of them come from miguel, so guys, you can thank him a lot ! i just put the videos on youtube for maybe 60, 70% of them. some informations about the unfinished journey color and quality issue : 1) i don't remember which is the source of this video. if it's from Miguel or mine. 2) the low picture quality is due to two issue added together: VHS transfer + lost of the color information due to a NTSC source converted in digital without a NTSC / PAL transcoder. it can be the source who was like that, i really don't remember this. why a source lost his color ? because of lack of proper NTSC / Pal converter, or recorded in SECAM from a PAL source with no information. some of my videos are in black and white because i only got a PAL VCR around 1997, so everything i recorded on German satellite dishes until i got this PAL VCR is in black and white because we lost the color information when we record a PAL Signal with a SECAM VCR. 3) i have unfortunatly a few sources like this, like the last video i uploaded featuring Harry Connick Jr. i was asking myself: best is to post nothing or to post this videos, but in this quality ? i took the second solution. best is this than nothing. i'm pretty sure that the source is the same (so miguel if you check your video, there is a possibility that you have it in black and white too), because a digital transfer of a NTSC VHS source in digital without a NTSC VHS VCR, f**k the color signal and give something hybrid, with some weird color. you all can see this on the video i uploaded of chick corea playing his COREA concerto at the boston pops below. fortunatly, it's a very few amount of videos.

  7. Doesn't sound distorted to me. Is that flautando? Are we sure it isn't con sord sul pont? To me it sounds like the strings are being manipulated with a band-pass filter from the console (lo-pass + hi-pass). Whatever it it is, it's something Doug could really enlighten us on once the NDAs pass. Another thought that came to me is that the engineer might being using the distant mikes to pick up the string section in that passage. Maybe woodwind or choir mikes, or ambients up in Wellington Town Hall's gallery. That's how Bernard Herrmann recorded the 8 female singers (4 altos, 4 sopranos) in OBSESSION - placing them in the organ loft of St Giles-without-Cripplegate Church. Their sound that came down from the organ loft was recorded by the string mike, giving a certain eerie, muted quality.

  8. Well call me rosy-tinted glasses wearing, but I think you're full of shit. And I'm an expert on being full of shit. Are you serious? Or wasted? You're going to compare Star Wars to a game that was hated when it came out, hated after it came out, and most likely hated into eternity? The only people that enjoyed that game grew up to be masochists. A more appropriate comparison might be Star Wars and Tetris. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Good god man. What are you smoking?

  9. Although it has been mentioned Zimmer and The Lion King, I think Beyond the Forest has some points in common with Ennio Morricone (composer that Zimmer has always looked carefully) and The Mission. Listen to clips from 43:02 and then here: Is a wonderful piece and I find it fantastic that there are composers as Shore who still write extremely melodic themes in the style of Morricone and Barry.

  10. Fucking brilliant, left me exhausted by the end in a good way. Excellent directing and performances all around, specially the Charlton Heston cameo. Brought me to tears! Billy Cristal totally stole his scene; and of course Branagh and the rest of the leads are brilliant too. Was particularly impressed with Winslet, truly terrific performance. Also, being a Shakespeare fan and my two favorite works of him being Hamlet and King Lear, I absolutely adored seeing the most-complete version out there -at least that I'm aware of. There was a lot of stuff that I didn't remember from my previous reads. Now I'm interested in re-reading it and watching the Olivier version to compare. I always find it amazing how much I identify with Hamlet's character. Can't tell exactly why... The only down-side was some of the too rushed editing. I got that this movie was going for a really agressive editing, but in some instances I wish they would have let the movie breath a little more. But I guess they felt it was already too long and didn't want to extend it any further. But four or five more minutes to a four hour movie wouldn't hurt. 9.5/10

  11. There is no Gondor Reborn in these samples. You're just hearing what you want to hear. There may be structural similarities, but such resemblances are superficial and exist across many themes or motifs used.

  13. That excerpt from Evening at Pops was transferred to digital by a fellow board member who wasn't able to make a proper conversion from NTSC to Pal, hence the black and white image. I know I have this on video, but can't really be sure if it is the exact same transfer or a color one. Will have to check.
