  1. Yes, God forbid we should have to extract our own meaning from music. Too much work, am i right?

  2. You'll be eating your own words when I demonstrate that I identified (and correctly named!) Tauriel's theme back in 1992 while listening to "Lecter Escapes".

  3. I'll analyse the crap out of this score so you think the Fellowship theme is a variation of the Song of the Lonely Mountain, written after Shore entered the rupture of the space-time continuum caused by the splitting of JWfan into two halves.

  4. Are you guys even serious right now? I posted that the opening logos theme from AUJ was the House of Durin theme two months ago! Doug and I even discussed it on this board!

  5. How does everyone feel about the piece? Heard it live? Will we get a recording, ever? Any theoretical/analytical thoughts regarding it? Of course this has likely been covered before, but now all the lively discussion will be in one place!

  6. Ori's Journal The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, a Hobbits Holiday. By Ori Bilbo Baggins BTW who wants to bet that the bit of Dialogue from Galadriel that Gandalf hears was the bit missing from AUJ that BB was talking about..

  7. Ori should be running around with some parchment and a quill in his hand, writing down everything that happens. "Balin said That was a dragon me laddie".

  17. The point is, there are many people who like this sort of game and therefore helped fund this one, because it's about time something like this was made again. I don't think anybody would complain if you could get the same quality of game with a moveable camera, but I doubt the logistics of that could be pulled off (and if they could, then only by big, rich studios who don't make that sort of game). Because the whole point is to have an actual RPG, as in something that resembles a pen and paper RPG insofar as that you control a group of characters through a story, with focus on the characters' dynamics and interactions. That's something you can best manage from a top down view, and even if you could move the camera, you'd mostly stick to that view nevertheless. Any other view would make the controls more convoluted, so chances are they would suffer in the top down view as well if they tried to make the game work better in a kind of 3rd person view. Plus the design requirements would be exponential, hence the graphics would suffer. The typical 3rd person view adventure type game, often with action elements added to the mix, is in my strong opinion about as anti-RPG as you can get. Those games may make great action adventures, and I'm not complaining that they are made and played, but what I demand is that we also get some actual RPGs. That's where your wrong. Obviously I've played more videogame RPG's than you over the years, so I also know what I'm talking about. I also played the old ones like the Ultima, ADD Forgotten Realms games, Might and Magic, Eye of the Beholder, Neverwinter Nights, Bard's Tales, etc... SOME current RPG's are "dumbed down" for the masses yes (Elder Scrolls Oblivion comes to mind) , but a lot STILL have complex systems that can take weeks to master and are very difficult. Take the turned based JRPG The Last Remnant for example. In some "Tales of" games you have to read guides just to understand the crafting system. A lot of games still have strong stories and deep character interactions too. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls have extremely complex leveling systems even if they rely on pure skill to beat the game. There is also nothing wrong with action components in a videogame RPG's , NOBODY wants to ONLY play turn based games ALL THE TIME. Immersion is about believing you are in the video game's world while your playing, something that a top down perspective cannot provide anymore and only existed because of technological limitations It's only your stubborn perception of the whole thing that sucks, that RPG= emulating a table top dice game only. The old games had their charm , but overall gaming evolution is that the games are overall a better experience now.

  19. Well I don't think it is the Witch-King but some other Ringwraith. The wraith clearly doesn't have the iron crown in AUJ. But it really doesn't matter. Only the knife matters. But who knows with PJ and the animators for this film. Perhaps that crown in the film looked cooler to PJ now than the tall one from FotR. Maybe the wraiths exchange their ghostly crowns for variety with some kind of rotation programme bi weekly or something.

  20. Nolan has millions of fans. He's bigger than Spielberg or any other director. I can't image they love him for his cold, sterile, asexual, heartless and soulless movies. If you ask me, the way how someone perceives Nolan's movies is based on one's personal translation. Heck, isn't that always the case when dealing with art?

  21. This MB certainly has the most and the most in depth continuous conversations about the Tolkien scores, films etc etc. Completely unplanned (as far as I know Ricard doesnt care for any of it). But it's become a great resource, and valid part of this forum and of Shore's Middle Earth music online. Doug would not contribute if this wasn't the case.

  23. What i miss is a snapshot once in a while, i. e. of gkgyver or greypilgrim attending the first midnight screening in their elven gown or wizard costume, complete with cusp cap (maybe even a rustic dwarf tog?), to loosen things up. Alternately i suppose little sound snippets of massive whooping screams during multiple ejaculations over boring Howard Shore filler cues could beguile members not blessed with the gift of complete devotion to Messr. Tolkiens grand achievements.

  26. Let's be honest. If there was something film music related people would like to discuss besides the horrible LotR and Hobbit threads, then they would bloody well discuss it and flood the General Discussion with lively threads of various subjects on films and film composers with topics that range between heaven and earth. Please find new threads and begin new discussions and I'll join them. But don't put the blame others for not doing anything if you can affect the outcome like in this case. Be the change Quint!

  29. At first I was like, hey this sounds pretty decent actually; and then around the halfway mark it suddenly turned into, I dunno something from The Crystal Maze, and it all went a bit shit. What a shame. Tyler pretty much took Balfe's excellent work and layered in lots and lots of bland drums. It's great in the game. I didn't think it was possible for the words "Balfe" and "excellent" to appear together in the same sentence! Now that I've seen it I'm still not sure that they should. :/

  30. Can't agree about the theoretical stuff as therein lies one of the key sources of inexhaustible fascination and enjoyment from music, no matter its age... unless of course you don't go in for analysis of music, which I can sympathize if not identify with. As for the rest, I'm sorry to say I agree. And even when there's an actual current score to discuss, the thread is dominated by disappointment and griping. Oh well. 2015 will be here soon and things will pick up.

  31. I liked the film, the Mirkwood scenes (when they left the path) was pretty sickening. Oh and a few bits of unreleased music. Also, I immensley disagree with Thor statement about there being travel shots that have low meandering strings, most of the "travel" shots were parts of chase scenes, there was not alot of time to stop and look at the scenery.

  34. Brave souls? Musically brain deaths I would say. Well, this the life here in JWfan nowdays. This shit and the Hobbit life. Atleast Hobbot is good film music, although not listenable outside of the film. I hope The Hobbit will win the Golden Globe.

  36. I didn't want to get into the #4-5 Ring connection yet and, in my haste, did not express myself clearly at all. For this I apologize. The AUJ titles are actually more Ring inspired than Dwarf inspired. This was why I said I'd say more at a later date. To be (slightly) clearer: claiming that the AUJ passage "is the House of Durin" theme is categorically incorrect. The line is related to both Durin and the Ring--more the latter than the former--but it is also its own thing. This is why I personally put no stock in list making per se. Lists always lose so much nuance. Of course, I couldn't even phrase my previous post correctly, so I guess I'm not one to talk, eh? D

  37. Hello again, tenaira. I wondered what had happened to you, so it's good to see you back. Here's what I can suggest that does exist: - Buhler, "Star Wars, Myth, and Music" in Music and Cinema (good analytical chapter) - Kalinak, Settling the Score, as Thor mentioned (analysis of ESB) - Larsen, Film Music (discusses some Star Wars) - Cooke, A History of Film Music (some biography and analysis) - Buhler, Neumeyer, and Deemer, Hearing the Movies (analysis of Catch Me If You Can) - Bazelon, Notes on Film Music (intriguing interview with JW pre-Star Wars) - Brown, Overtones and Undertones (bits and pieces throughout the book) - Karlin and Wright, On the Track (bits and pieces of JW score analysis) - Hickman, Reel Music (chapter on E.T., only a little musical analysis) - also check out Frank Lehman's dissertation, "Reading Tonality Through Film" - he's a very astute scholar and musician, and a great writer to boot I'm with you in saying that there's a great need for more literature on Williams. I for one am doing what I can - see my blog for several analyses of Williams themes (http://www.filmmusicnotes.com/series/john-williams-themes/) Good luck with your PhD! It'll be great to have more academic work on Williams so that when we look for literature on him, we can finally turn this: into this:
