  2. The music during the final scene of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND ("The Visitors/Bye/End Credits" from the OST). Gorgeous piece of music.

  3. The ROTJ music was heard at the closing ceremony, and it was preceded by the amazing conversation with the UFO. I found it so unbelievable I was in tears during the entire segment (starts at 5:15):

  4. Nah! I would rather hear your thoughts on my new movie idea InterStellan, which is an experimental plunge into the fractured psyche of the Swedish actor Stellan Skarskård, the man whose characters seems to have a perpetual hangover in every role he does.

  7. I think the E.T. experiment in the video illustrates why film music has gotten so backgroundy. With today's visual and audio technology, a lot of what the music was doing there could be achieved visually. Neat tribute though! And fantastic advice from John Williams himself about the importance of getting something, anything down on paper, and then refining and iterating. It applies to virtually every field. Creative, technical, physical.

  11. Hi everybody. I thought you guys might enjoy a couple of things I recorded at the Oscar Concert. The first is an audio-only recording I made of The Book Thief suite, accompanied by the on-stage interview. The second is an audio-only recording I made of the Gravity suite, accompanied by the on-stage interview. While the studio recording of The Book Thief's score didn't do much for me, the live version (as expected, I suppose) was much more powerful and evocative. The elegance and nuance of Williams's suite, especially when compared to the evening's other offerings, for me truly evoked the sweeping emotion of Hollywood's Golden Age. That being said, as much as I adore Williams, Gravity stole the show. I was absolutely overwhelmed by it. Complete sensory overload is the only way to put it. I didn't want to ruffle any Oscar feathers, so these are private links, meaning you can't search for them on YouTube, but instead can only access them through the direct links. I'll paste the full links at the bottom for you to cut/paste/save etc. Hope you folks enjoy! 12. Well those 5 seconds were pure Thomas sound and put the other shits(mostly those pop farts) in shame. Of course the oboe solo from The Book Thief was out of this world and that score should win the statuette.

  13. Most others would find themselves confined to a comfy padded cell when they start talking about trees whispering to them. In an artist's case people just think he is his adorable eccentric artistic self. THE TREES MADE ME DO IT!

  17. Cremers would love to become the new Joe. Well, what sensible adult wouldn't? If JWFan was like the only group of people left on Earth (think The Walking Dead), we would all look to Joey as the camp's leader. Alex

  18. It was really checking out these three CDs from the library (probably just looking for Star Wars and Indiana Jones music) and listening to them on the CD player in my room that blew my mind. Kind of my Almost Famous/Tommy moment. I probably already loved all the famous themes just from watching the movies, but I remember being pretty overwhelmed by the emotional statements I didn't quite realize he was capable of, like "Remembrances," "Face of Pan", the JFK prologue, "Hymn to the Fallen", as well as stuff that had the catchy melodies and big "capital letters" sound that I loved, like The Cowboys overture, "The Barrel Chase," "Jim's New Life," "The Banquet", the Midway march...etc.

    John Powell kicks ass

Someone needs to recruit John Powell to do some live action. A Marvel film, perhaps? Karol

  21. Sorry for the late response. Bottom line: I thought the EFLA score was great and a lot of fun. It isn't as bleak or grim as the EFNY score was (which I also enjoyed) b/c it's a score to a hokey movie. It also has a nice blend of synthetic and orchestral music. The synth driven tracks by Walker skillfully merges with Carpenter's overall soundscape. The heroic theme/motif she gave Snake(which can be heard in "Submarine Launch", "Hang Glider Attack", "Helicopter Arrival", "Fire Fight") is a highlight as well. IMO this is up there with some of the best sci-fi action scores in the 90s. Recommended to both Walker and Carpenter fans.

  25. Yes, I like the way the Force theme is harmonised over its submediant (Eb), which then acts as a secondary dominant to Ab, which in turn cadences on a warm Db, the furthest chord away from Gm, but yet sounds totally satisfying. The beginning of the New Republic.

  27. Fans of John Williams will find much to enjoy in Reinhold Gliere's Symphony No. 3. This epic work is really peerless but think part Wagner, Rimsky Korsakov's Scheherazade and Scriabin put in a blender. It is a gigantic programmatic symphony that tells a story of good and evil on mythological scales.
