  2. Actually, JWFAN has never been a reliable source. Agreed. I was actually joking. I remember you mentioning that before... but I have to disagree. It's been 16 years and the vast majority of visitors either don't have a clue of what you're referring to or have forgotten about it. Sure, with its huge amount of content on Williams works and releases, Jeff's site was a great reference, but concerning news items, it was not more reliable than any other unofficial site. Its seeming semi-officiality was actually the result of not citing any source + replacing a Geocities URL with “johnwilliams.org”. As for JWFAN's own reliability, I think it has always been way above average compared to most fan sites out there. We've always cited the original sources with no exception, posted as many links as possible on every subject matter, and very, very rarely fallen into the "rumor trap" (yes, it happened in recent weeks, but try to find another "false rumor" spread by this site over the past decade). If something has changed in the last few years, is that we're even more trustworthy as a news source. As far as exclusive news and articles goes, we'd had way more than those (the current incarnation of the site only reflects about 20% of thousands of news articles posted over the years). Sound clips, track listings, CD artworks, interviews or early reviews are all part of the extensive list of items that JWFan has provided to its readers before anyone else did. And as redundant as it may sound, the fact is that, thanks to its vast number of erudite members and contributors, JWFan has been the main reference for John Williams fans over the last 15 years, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change in the near future.

  4. http://www.liveforfilms.com/2015/04/04/marvel-releases-star-wars-episode-iv-a-new-hope-ogn/ Al Williamson is the greatest artist of all time. I am a nearly lifelong fan of the classic Marvel Comics adaptations of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I've stared at all 6 issues of Empire and the Dark Horse reissues (acquired from comic book stores in the early to mid 90s) more than any other printed material. Marvel is now reissuing them and they have apparently RUINED them! Check this shit out: http://comicbook.com/2014/12/16/marvel-announces-new-remastered-edition-of-original-star-wars-ad/ The left is obviously the new "remastered" version. What's perhaps most disturbing about this is that they seem to have made it more resemble the Abrams Star Trek movie. Look at the panel with the Star Destroyer and Blockade Runner in orbit of Tatooine. Jesus Christ. I'm truly concerned for the Al Williamson/Carlos Garzon Empire adaptation. Can we expect to see those classic starfields with like zillions of planets replaced with Abrams lens flares? Will the original Jabba the Hutt be replaced with the SE version? Should we expect SE alterations?

I love how disaster movies always feature a grand party with someone singing a song about how they hope everyone will survive what's about to happen. Who arranged that set? If I'm ever on a cruise or in a tall building or a plane or on an island or anywhere remotely unsafe and someone starts to sing something like "Love Is A Flotation Device" or "It Burns Hottest (Just Before The End)," I'm haulin' my ass the hell outta there.

  8. Ah, yeah, they are maybe an inch smaller on each side than traditional comics - part of the concession of fitting ~500 pages of comics in a book and not breaking the bank. I have moved my reading to entirely electronic (my Kindle Fire, my spouse's iPad), so they're the same size for me as anything else I read. Since they rebooted in 2015, I've bought all of Marvel's Star Wars issues in paper. They all include free digital copies, so I get to support the local comic shop by buying paper, download the copy to my Kindle, and then resell the otherwise unused paper comics. The only thing I really miss about reading paper comics, weirdly, is the ads. Comic book ads are always such a great time capsule of the time the books came out. It's a very different experience reading an issue of Alpha Flight from 1985 vs. buying and downloading that same issue.

  11. Pope is a wonderful composer. What few works he's done are full of colour. And he's a master orchestrator. The detuned strings for some of the Smaug material was a stroke of genius. I was surprised and a bit disappointed to see that Shore wasn't behind that.

  12. Gorgeous arrangement. Thanks for the heads-up! I have to check the rest of that album now. And if we are precise it is The Chairman's Waltz.

  17. I don't know why, but listening to those I grin and bob my head, but I never get that hopeless sinking feeling, sweaty palms or so on that I get when Williams does darkness. This is a great example.
