  1. So just for record keeping purposes: John Williams selects Thomas Newman to replace him on Bridge of Spies John Williams selects Erskine to ghost write his trailer music for Star Wars...for JJ Abrams' Star Wars. Michael Giacchino: 0 Everyone Else: 2

  3. I think some members haven't really been listening to Williams' output in the last five years. He never lost anything. In fact, I think War Horse is one of the most endearing scores of his entire career. It's remarkable to note that the response from non-Williams' fans to the trailer music has been nothing but enthusiastic. I read a lot of talkback on the trailer this morning and noticed how often the music was mentioned as one of its strongest factors.

  6. Here's an eight-chord progression in which each successor is the least (or joint least) popular according to that table. I - #IV - II - bVI - III - bII - V - VII Now to come up with the most unpopular melody ever to accompany it...

  7. Charles Aznavour should have written this score. Oh well.

  8. I rather think there is often pronounced silence at junctures of understanding. By both parties involved. Which has to do with laziness, often enough also on part of those, to brings this full circle, who high-five lots of stuff but shy away from explaining themselves better. I always enjoy reading longer posts on film music, save for some stuff i just cannot bring myself to be interested in, so i would encourage more threads like the Last Listening or Classical Thread, where there are at least great links to music i don't know or actual insightful reviews of scores. No hard feeling towards Jason, but i think this boards needs less of the jittery Twitter alerts and marketing blurbs about current Hollywood movies (it is after all a JW forum) but more people discussing this hobby (TGP gets some kudos for his tireless efforts on behalf of Zimmer though i don't always can understand them).

  9. Yeah, I'm not sure why you're taking this is an indication that Williams will reuse pieces in the final score Bespin. It's a trailer, playing heavily on the nostalgia factor, so Williams approached it by re-working classic musical moments from the OT.

  10. Yeah, in fairness Freeze is like the Star Wars equivalent of gkg. They were bound to clash eventually.

  11. Great list! I just rewatched Taxi Driver. Unless you hate the story for any particular reason, I can't see what's to dislike about such a great example of perfect filmmaking.

  14. The most important things to me were confirmed today - you CAN play in third person, which is what I was hoping for. We'll get dogfighting again, all atmospheric. And it looks that there may more or less be a single player conquest type mode. I'm excited!

  17. Below is something similar I've found very informative. It's from an academic study of 100 songs from Rolling Stone magazine's "Greatest 500 Songs of All Time" list. Basically, these authors took the 20 highest-ranked songs of each decade from the 1950s through the 1990s, then analyzed the harmony in all. The table shows the number of times chord X (on the left-hand side) goes to chord Y (along the top) in all the songs. What is most obvious is that the most important chord besides the tonic is not the dominant, but the subdominant. In other words, the most common chord successions are IV-I and I-IV. There's a ton more that can be said from these numbers too. I thought it was very interesting. EDIT: I should add that the chords listed include all chord qualities of the same root, and inversions as well as chordal extensions (7ths, 9ths, etc.) are excluded. These are simply the roots of the chords.

  18. OK, let me put is differently. Yes, there are plenty of comic book movies. But not many of those are as adult as they think. (I used the word "adolescent" before and that's as far as they go) Karol

  22. I think this might be more useful if we each pick...less? Like maybe one from each album. Otherwise by the time this thread is done natedog will end up having to listen to Episodes 1-6 from beginning to end! Ep1: The Tide Turns - The Death of Darth Maul Ep2: Confrontation with Count Dooku and Finale Ep3: Anakin vs. Obi-Wan Ep4: Imperial Attack Ep5: The Rebel Fleet/End Title Ep6: Shuttle Tydirium Approaches Endor

  23. Shit. Too many to name. Here are my favourites. STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: RETURN OF THE JEDI: THE PHANTOM MENACE: THE ATTACK OF THE CLONES: THE REVENGE OF THE SITH: That misses all the really good stuff.

  24. Not really, more here thrives on built relationships of certain members whereas on FSM ad hominem attacks between complete strangers seems to be the norm. If you think 'understanding' through, you end up with nobody ever posting a reply because, yeah, it's OK. Sometimes it's not OK and society needs discourse to grow. Not always in childish terms but this notion that a, say, Michael Giacchino thread must belong to fans of his music is just completely alien to me.

  28. Yup Aaah! There was a Persepolis film! But I didn't see it. I remember the book though. It was good, but there was a time when they kept beating it over and over again Read Persepolis, read Persepolis! and that made me wary to read it as first.

  30. James doesn't get a pass because he made a mockery out of the term 'heavy borrowing'. Williams and Goldsmith did their little steals in measured ways, Goldsmith more so later in his career due to the sheer output vs. old age, but honestly: a composer that constantly churned out innovative music in between 1959 and 1982 mustn't be mentioned in the same sentence as James Horner in that regard.

  33. This passage correspond to the Finale of the 1990 version of "The Throne Room" Theme (that we heard on the albums JW conducts the SW trilogy and Revenge of the Sith OST). What the he** that specific passage of Throne Room Theme is doing in the Episode VII Trailer??? As far as I know, it's the fanfare from 'Yoda and the Force'. @ 3:00.

  34. I don't know how anyone could have something against the trailer music! I personally do think it's 100% Williams, aside from maybe the percussion. But even if it weren't, who cares? It sounds wonderful and evokes exactly the mood that we all look for in these Star Wars trailers. Great stuff! It's useless to be cynical and over-analytic of these things. Just take it all in and let it affect you like it's meant to.

  35. Yet you would choose the other side of the coin as an alternative to posting something positive? Do you thrive on conflicts and criticism? Is a conversation where there are no two opposing sides not worth having? Read what i wrote. You concoct your very own semantic meaning of 'positive' that lies very much in the eye of the beholder and i think it leads to a rather simplistic line of moderation - when on the other hand you remain suspiciously vague of how that post in question SF1 went ballistic about was a TROLL!! post in the outrageous sense of the word. I just don't see it. I am the last one to bond with Guyver and have done enough ranting with him to prove it but for me, SF1's post in this very case seems much more conspicuous and pot-stirring. Well I read your post too fast while at work and did a hasty interpretation. Apologies. And yes the quick angry reaction whether from someone who has a positive view on the matter at hand or a negative one is equally bad. And quick accusations of trolling and other kinds of outbursts when someone is making a quite harmless comment (even at the standards of this MB) is not any better than someone winding people up just for their own amusement.

  37. I haven't watched the latest trailer but I'm imagining lots of dark and moody, as one would rightly expect from a Batman movie. However, I can at times find it a bit obvious and even cliché outside of that franchise.

  38. I rewatched it yesterday, and I honestly don't get why some people say it's the worse movie they've ever seen. I think the movie is an absolute masterpeice (as is the score), and I don't expect everyone to agree with me. Buit to say this movie is awful and an utter waste of time is beyond me. To some people the movie may not seem brilliant as it did with me, but nowhere is it near of being one of the worse of all time. That's plain, simple, unfair exageration.

  42. Williams' involvement was probably limited to his old and feeble hand, gently but firmly guided by Felix Erskine, signing off on allowing this newcomer to take over his material, with Kathleen Kennedy reassuring him. "It's ok John, this nice man is going to give you some help!"
