  1. Giacchino is currently recording the score at Abbey Road! Having loved Jurassic World, I'm excited that Giacchino and Trevorrow are teaming up again. I can't wait to hear this one!

  2. High-Rise by Clint Mansell Finally got to checking it out. Very neat! It's like a finely mixed cocktail of Nyman, Newman and Desplat, while still retaining Mansell's own voice. Would like to hear more of this kind of sound from him, though I'm not as familiar with Mansell's body of work as I could be.

    BBC Proms 2016

The 2016 season of the BBC Proms was announced this week. I would be interested as ever to read any recommendations from the good folk of JWFan: BBC Proms 2016 listings There are a lot of big choral and operatic works programmed this year. For film music fans, the highlights will probably be a Quincy Jones prom (with the Dutch Metropole Orkest - please please please play The Italian Job), the annual appearance of the peerless John Wilson Orchestra in an all Gershwin concert and Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky cantata on the opening night. The price to stand has gone up from £5 to £6 this year. The horror!

  4. I think I do enjoy the action/adventure stuff a little more in Tintin than TFA, but the latter's emotional highlights make it no contest for me. There's nothing in Tintin as fabulous as The Scavenger, Rey's Theme, Farewell & The Trip, or The Jedi Steps & Finale.

  5. The hiring of Justin Lin tells me they're taking this one even further into being a straight up action movie than the first two. I hope I'm wrong. Anyway as with most other diehard Trek fans I'm placing all my hopes for the future of this world in Bryan Fuller's hands.

  6. So with a new trailer for the revamp, the Internet has exploded in protest: http://www.theweek.co.uk/top-gear/65189/top-gear-chris-evans-and-matt-leblanc-deny-being-at-war I just don't get it - everyone seems to want the reboot to fail, especially after the cenotaph 'incident', which was the biggest load of politically-correct twaddle I've seen in a while. I love the original show, and I want both to succeed, and there's no question in my mind that the BBC did exactly the right thing.

  7. Plus, for me personally, Into Darkness has one of my top 3 favorite Giacchino scores, so I'm really looking forward to this one.

  8. Really wonderful performance, Jwfan2234 - thanks for these links. There are certain moments that I actually find more moving or impactful than in the original, particularly where the trumpets are concerned. Here we get to enjoy some of the punch and bravado that I just find to be a bit lacking in the TFA recordings. And I do like the concert ending, though the way the TFA credits end is just perfection. And to think I almost didn't bother watching!

  9. There were like 5 or 6 movies that came out total in 1977. Maybe one or two channels on TV. And porn was difficult to get. Of course it was an instant classic.

  14. Both on album and as a score, it's a fantastic coda to have that music appear in fully developed form, and in warmly cathartic style, when you've heard it hinted at several times earlier in much more melancholic and fleeting shadings. Even just from that structural/dramatic standpoint, it's awesome. Taken on its own, if you've never heard a note of the rest of the score and so can't appreciate the thematic significance of it, I can't imagine it still not being appealing, but I can start to understand that it sounds like your typical "epic emotional" music (Ottman's awful aping of it in the latest X-Men score doesn't help that image). But the construction, the intervals used, the harmonies, are so far beyond the usual amateurish stuff you get in that style. And the score isn't really all that loud, is it? There's a fair amount of action, but it's quite tastefully arranged and produced - far from the wall-of-sound that many write it off as, especially when you compare it to certain other recent really LOUD scores! There's a ton of atmosphere and moody, pseudo-noir too. As for best tracks/cues... I really like Mr. Charles.

    Where is Bloodboal?

He's actually revealed nothing about his personal life whatsoever on this board - not his name, job, or country of origin. Only that he's European. Of course, I see everyone's IP addresses

  17. It is a quote from the little known show Seinfeld. As to why, just my way of treating the conversation with the degree of seriousness it deserves. People criticism Rey's theme because it will not be remembered 20 years from now? Come on, that is only evidence 20 years from now. We cannot use our speculations about the future as real evidence of anything in the present. Maybe it will be remembered, maybe not, we just have to wait. I doubt the Force theme was an instant classic in 77 (though Luke's theme was), but it has endured.

  19. Bosch Season 2 I just love this guy's resemblance to my 80's tv paragons, like Colt, Hunter or Spenser (or dare i say, Stacy Keach's Mike Hammer).

  22. I actually don't think it's possible to compose a theme, especially for the movies, with the intent of it becoming famous. It either happens or it doesn't. No one figured the Pirates Of The Caribbean theme would become huge, yet it did. The assertion that Rey's theme has failed because it won't be known to the masses 20 years from now is ridiculous. (There are many great Star Wars themes that aren't known to the general public)
