Anne of the Thousand Days - Georges Delerue Exquisite. I have a feeling Jocelyn Pook's Merchant of Venice took inspiration from this score, in terms of atmosphere. The way Delerue wrote and recorded the score, there's a strong sense of the period setting but the writing is timeless.3 points

Two of my favourite scores in this genre are Lalo Schifrin's Cool Hand Luke (perhaps the quintessential Southern film score - check out the music for the egg eating contest) and Charles Bernstein's terrific score for the Chuck Bronson melon farmer shoot-em-up Mr Majestyk.1 point

I completed The Witcher 3. Phew! An absolute monster of a game and arguably one of the greatest hardcore RPGs ever made. Utterly stunning to look at in the right weather conditions too, it can be breathtaking. I managed to secure one of the better endings so I'm pretty satisfied with how it finally played out, even if I did entirely stop taking on contracts and side quests after 90 hours or so. The whole thing took me 116 hours, which means that's gonna be it for me and big games for another year or two. Now I have a massive craving to shoot things in the face violently for a few days. Doom it is!1 point

Abbreviation in score for 'Harry's Wondrous World'
The Psycho Pianist reacted to KingPin for a topic
The abbreviation stands for "with woodwinds." If you look at the very first measure of the piece, it identifies the line for the glockenspiel. The instrument hasn't changed - you can tell because the specific instrument is in normal font in the very first measure and the instruction is in italics - it's just that the score is simply indicating that the glockenspiel is supporting the woodwinds at that particular measure. If you look at measure 20, you'll see the exact same "w/Wws" indication for the piano line, so it's clearly not an abbreviation for a specific instrument. The "oaky" woodblock-like sound you think you are hearing is not percussion, but the accented plucking of pizzicato strings.1 point -

Little known fact: John's lightsaber is actually disguised as his conducting baton. It comes in especially handy when some lowly trumpeter plays a D flat instead of a D sharp.1 point

Also checked out Laurent Perez Del Mar on Spotify after the pleasant 'La tortue rouge' and found some more pleasant things like the above. A lot of his scores sound as if Bourne and RCP never happened which probably is a good thing.1 point

I'll have to check that score out ASAP! Sounds very Delerue which usually means excellence. Kubo of the Two Strings by Dario Marianelli: A new Marianelli score is always nice to hear although upon the initial listen the concessions to the modern scoring trends are very noticeable. This does not however detract too much from the colorful blend of Japanese instruments and Western orchestra which is truly charming at times. I think further listens will only improve my opinion of the score.1 point

Howard Shore's The Battle of the Five Armies (Hobbit Part 3)
SafeUnderHill reacted to gkgyver for a topic
I find myself coming back again and again to Battle For The Mountain. The first 3 minutes are quite frankly among the best Shore has ever written. Dain's theme there is pure magic. I would die to hear an extension of that. Too bad the film ruins it.1 point -

Potterdom Film/Score Series Thread
Bilbo reacted to bollemanneke for a topic
You sort of misinterpreted that. Yes, it always happened like this, but no, the past is not unchangable. I suppose it depends on your perspective of time.1 point -
I'm sure the play is very well-produced and entertaining -- I would like to see how they pulled off some of the things in there onstage -- but just as a reading experience and continuation of Potter it was fairly disappointing and a little irritating to me in how much it contradicted the books, mostly in small ways but a few big ones as well. Just didn't really convince me overall that it was written by somebody who really knew those books, the characters and the "rules" of that world inside and out, and some of the new ideas and developments cheapened the original stories for me instead of enhancing them. Felt like it was geared more to casual fans, which is fine, I don't mean that in a condescending way but it's easy to see why most people who read the series more than once seem to be dismissing it. Surprising given JKR's involvement but there it is. So I'm not really looking forward to a potential adaptation. Part of me kind of hopes there'll be some major recastings so it'll be easier to ignore altogether although funnily enough, the story would probably make more sense as a sequel to the movies. There are things about the play that you really have to stretch to actually incorporate into the books, but the films have a lot more wiggle room in that regard.1 point

Star Wars is better than everything
Bilbo reacted to Pieter Boelen for a topic
That is very much beside the point. If you name-drop Star Wars, do you mean the original film OR the entire series as a whole? Without context, that cannot be known. If you name-drop "A New Hope", then your intention is clear. It also has the "II" in the title, which serves to clarify it just fine.1 point -

In honor of Hook's 25th anniversary, I covered "When You're Alone" on guitar. The rest of the score is so damn perfect that this is the only track I could kinda put my own spin on. Hope you enjoy!1 point

Star Wars is better than everything
crumbs reacted to Doug Adams for a topic
Shot this about a year ago, and I don't honestly remember much! I only really spoke about the the music, not the prequels themselves. I think I showed some *very* basic connections between themes at the piano ... nothing too heady since it's a more general audience thing, not a music documentary. They shot for a few hours, but I don't know what they'll use. Haven't seen a frame of it yet, but I wish them all the best. Director and crew were nice guys. Very genuine about their enthusiasm, I thought.1 point -
