  1. OK we've all had fun but let's go back to updating this thread when there's actual news.

  3. Largest choir would actually drive me away from this. Epic ChoirTM has become a awful nuisance.

  4. I assume this has been 11 pages of no news regarding Williams recording the new Star Wars score?

  5. That's hilarious! I also heard a thrilling tidbit from someone high up at Lucasfilm, that when Williams first showed Spielberg his ideas for Raiders of the Lost Ark, he actually had come up with two versions of the main theme. And when he asked Steven which one he liked, he simply said "can't you use both?" And then the latter theme became the bridge to the former's main melody!

  9. From the booklet: So it was put together by D. Wilson Ochoa very recently, and is performed on this album.

  11. Jar Jar mocking fan service? This is what Disney has reduced Star Wars to. I'm sorry, but I just find it far more pitiful than anything Lucas supposedly ever did.

  12. So no change there, then.

  13. Woah, Duel of the Fates is finally making a comeback!? And not only that; it's going to be played non-stop throughout the film, with a 1000-piece choir and 100-piece brass section too? This is just what I've been waiting for!!! I'm so stoked!!! KORAAAA RATAMAAAAA!!!!!!

  14. A delightful suite from R. Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos". It has a sweet pastoral tone throughout. The "Le bourgeois gentilhomme Suite" from the same album is worth a listen too. The final movement is my favourite.

  16. Here's a crazy theory: maybe "for revision" means Williams is revising it?

  17. He does indeed use a similar fast tempo in concerts. Completely mystifying to me...as you said, it totally changes the piece. I'd even go so far as to say it ruins it.

  18. And that's why Williams integrated it so subtly that nobody noticed it at first.

  19. Just a heads up to anyone looking to travel to LA for this weekend, hotels right around the Bowl have gotten ridiculous in price. I've stayed at a couple a mere 5 minute walk from the main sign on Highland Blvd. before because they were good decent options for the Hollywood area but in no way are they worth the $300+ per night (plus parking fees!!!) that they want now. Sucks because there's not a lot close-ish by to anything. But you can stay a few minutes walk from Disneyland for $100-ish/night. But note the Bowl is at leat an hour's drive from Disneyland.

  20. Was listening to ET again the other day so its fresh in my mind... this is probably my all time favorite short musical moment in any score, Williams or otherwise: 4:28-5:06

  21. Im looking forward to hearing the Hymn from SAVING PRIVATE RYAN..I never liked that film recording that was done at Boston Hall. It was to distant and reverby. I hope the acoustics are well catured this time.

  24. It must just be a very different "language" that you have to get used to. It's similar to the reason why classical harmonies don't often click with me (at least on first listen). In Williams concertos, the music always feels to me like it's reaching for something, but never getting there, leading to an unsatisfying experience. There's not the same easy-to-love "resonance" (it's hard to describe). It often feels like it's kind of "too high-pitched" (again, hard to describe!) and twisting and turning away from where I want it to go. I assume as you say it's something you can get used to, and at some point you won't find those harmonies lacking. In fact, even just a few more listens to some of these recently have made me appreciate them more.

  25. The Amazing Spider-Man. Decided to give this ago after totally giving up on the terrible Toby Maguire movies. Now THIS one was good! No Spider-Man whispering in that torured voice Toby just can't seem to drop. Garfield is so much better. Uncle Ben is better, the villain is credible this time (no more stupid, childish hideous laughing)... And Horner's score is absolutely magical. Still wasn't moved sufficiently when Ben died, but my goodness, this is so much better than Elfman's perennial, comical, undramatic, annoymous, chaotic crap!

Well naturally, arrogance and the British go hand in hand. Nobody looks down the nose as a collective like we do.

  28. You are perfectly right... This theme is a great forgotten one! I'm afraid we'll have to wait an album called "The John Williams & Georges Lucas Collaboration"! I stopped you video after 1 minute... that's an awefull interpretation. My reference for the concert version is still the Charles Gerhardt version.

  32. I think this "flute ban" is being taken a bit too seriously and literally. I'm sure Djawadi's allowed to use flutes in the score if he wants to, certainly nowadays! I would guess that "No flutes!" was just an over-simplified way of saying that the main themes should avoid the idyllic/rural/Celtic character associated with so many fantasy scores in the past. You can hear upper woodwind contributions in this setting of the Baratheon theme from Season 1, for example.

  33. I got a super secret inside scoop of something that happened as Spielberg was in post production on Schindler's List, an inside source told me, and after all these years I feel I can finally share it publicly. Apparently when John Williams first saw the film, he told Steven he'd need a better composer than him to score it, and Spielberg responded "I know, but they're all dead!"

  34. There are some scores where the concert tracks don't seem to fit at the end. I always have this problem with Star Wars scores in particular, because they have such a definitive beginning and end built into the score itself. That's why I mention TFA, because it seems more satisfying to have the concert tracks as interludes within the score than to hear them after the end credits wrap things up so wonderfully. I sometimes find myself listening to a score like ESB or AotC without the concert tracks, which I end up treating more like separate singles that I might just listen to on their own. In the Lost World I like hearing the concert track at the end as a sort of end credits piece in itself, but I can see how you might sequence it a different way.

  36. It really is a perfect score. Maybe I'm just being grumpy but it sometimes seems the young up-and-coming Williams fans don't give it the respect and adulation it deserves. Sure, Harry Potter and Jurassic Park are amazing, but this is where it all started!

  37. I always really liked this little bit from 1:23 to 1:49. As far as I can tell, it doesn't show up anywhere else in the soundtrack.
