  1. It was really lovely. Seeing Williams speak and conduct his music was a wonderful thing. Made me feel quite emotional. He appeared at the very start of the evening to introduce the concert. It was quite obvious he's going to conduct the SW section (plus Yoda's Theme and The Imperial March encores) when David Newman mentioned there might be a "surprise" at the end. Other thoughts: Absolutely loved The Cowboys and Jane Eyre segments. Galaxy's Edge was good to hear but the piece itself doesn't convince me one bit. It was nice to see three segments conducted to film. The E.T. was the opening sequence as indicated on the programme. SPR was the opening cue followed by the shortened Hymn to the Fallen and JP had the dinosaur reveal scene with chorus followed by the fanfare. Amistad was played faster than usual. I really enjoyed it. The Williams conducted segment: The Adventures of Han was played bit slower than the soundtrack recording. It's a really fun piece. Luke and Leia was the shortened version. After that, he spoke about having completed 100 minutes of the new score and having to go back to his "other job" the next day and write another 40 minutes due to film changes. And that it is a lot of music. He said he was assured by Disney this is the "last film" and then added it will be the last one he does. Whether he was being serious is anybody's guess. Then he conducted the Main Title and the two encores. Again, it was a thrilling and emotional thing to witness. I really enjoyed Tanglewood. I'm also glad me and Marian arrived early to wander about a bit. You can understand why he keeps coming back to this place - it's very relaxing. Quite a lot of people arrived later on so it lost its peaceful vibe to the big summer concert excitement. I'm glad we decided to go, especially after what happened last year in London. While only small segment was conducted by Williams himself it was still more than worth all the money. You can tell he's quite old now especially when he walks but, oddly, that goes away as he starts to conduct. It's like doing that gives him new energy. It made me think of that Yoda duel scene in AOTC actually. 😄 Karol

  2. The full quote from Williams: Well, there you have it. JW proclaims TROS is his final Star Wars score, that JJ is back to his usual routine of constant edit changes, and 100 minutes of score is already laid down (there's no way he recorded that much music before heading to Tanglewood in June; he must have made several trips back to California to record more of the score during July and August). 40 more minutes of score in the next month, then October/November for inserts (it's inevitable... it is his destiny). On a side note, that was a ripping performance of the Main Title by the Boston Pops, much better than the existing TFA recording. Please update it for TROS, Johnny!

  4. I happened to see this photo from the Library of Congress, with a handwritten cover page (by Williams himself, it seems), showing the very first, 5-movement version of the Star Wars suite. Note the December 5, 1977 date:

  6. Awesome, thanks for posting!!! Left to right: @Tanglehead, me, @Foxfan, @Marian Schedenig, @crocodile This was taken just inside the main gates. After it was taken, @Tanglehead went to his seat and the 4 remaining enjoyed beer and wine together before the show started!

  10. Another incredible, emotional, heartwarming, and chilling evening seeing living legend John Williams. He even looked and smiled at me a lot from the podium! There was one particular moment when he saw me after I was one of the first to stand for an ovation, and he did this kind of “huzzah!” moment with both arms raised and a big smile right at me. Chills to have so much interaction with the maestro himself from the podium! During the Star Wars portion of the evening, he shared that he had written 100 minutes of music for “The Rise of Skywalker” so far, but that it was a bit difficult since Abrams changes scenes a lot. He then said he’ll be returning to LA tomorrow (Sunday, August 25) to write the remaining 40 minutes of music required! He also called TROS “wonderful”, commented on the “comedy” between Rey and Kylo in TFA that continues in the new film, and that Ridley and Driver are wonderful as well. I thought “comedy” was a very strange word choice - make of it what you will. Such an incredible night. Fingers crossed for Boston next Spring!

  11. I was able to capture the complete concert. Will listen tomorrow morning, but my spot check of it was that it was fine. (Was actually watching A New Hope tonight during the concert!)

  14. And this is a more complete version of The Last Jedi with all the blanks and microedits filled in by the OST (plus alternates and concert suites relegated to the end as bonuses, like a Matessino expansion). 2h47m in duration.

  19. Thanks for the praise and feedback guys @Pellaeon I've tried different compositions etc. but Roger Kastel's poster for Empire "Style A" doesn't work. The design is simply too tall for it and I feel you'd loose too much of Vader's helmet and the X-Wings as well, even with the second draft version which is less "busy" and imo better. The same goes for Kazuhiko Sano's "Style B" for Jedi, it would get too cramped, so unless I can get a hold on the wider art they used for the LaserDisc I wouldn't consider it as an alternate. I'll have a look at Struzan's D23 poster for Force Awakens and Paul Shipper's stunning Dolby poster for Last Jedi. But heidl already made those here and here. @Richard certainly Though I suppose in a way this poster is more suited as Tom Jung did all three. However I don't think he brought his usual a-game for this one. It's way too simple for the final part of an epic sci-fi trilogy.

  24. Seeing JW live is always a special experience and indeed very emotional. For me, it always felt like equally as if I was seeing Mozart or Verdi live. I’m very happy you and Marian managed to finally see him live! It’s indeed worth every penny. The program looks a good mixture of uber-classics and less wore-out material. Very classy to dedicate a slot to the great Alfred Newman. I’m particularly curious about the Ryan and Jurassic Park segments performed live to film—were they actual sequences from the film, or just montage clip shows? I think JW will continue to conduct at least portions of his concerts until his health will permit. It’s quite evident he enjoys it a lot and gets a lot of sincere joy out of it. It’s too much of a blast for any musician to be in front of a cheering audience while doing what you love the most.

  28. And even though Williams jokes about scoring these films from start to finish, even TFA had multiple stretches without music. So allowing for 10 music-less minutes, the runtime is likely around 2:30. JJ will probably trim it down to 2:25 before release. And I'd be shocked if Williams didn't have at least a day of pick-ups in November, as with TFA.

  29. Palpatine does look a bit like a CGI render there, certainly not McDiarmid in make-up. But I'm guessing Palpy spends the majority of the runtime as a CGI ghost-like spirit rather than a physical presence. No doubt until the very end when he takes physical form. Footage sounds cool though. Overall I like the poster though, it's just a teaser anyway. We'll still get the traditional floating heads one when the final trailer drops.

  37. There are simply too many great themes to choose from. A Bridge/Window to the Past is another good one but I imagine e.g. something like The Accidental Tourist or Seven Years in Tibet, Jane Eyre or Lincoln would really shine in a solo violin and orchestra arrangement.
