  1. I would have been like this the whole way home

  2. That was me who picked up TLJ at Epcot! And only because someone here posted that SOMEONE ELSE on another forum got it early at Epcot (which, of course, is always how these things go). I remember driving over to Epcot after work one day and getting there about 20 minutes before closing, thinking I was a complete freaking idiot...until I saw it on the shelf. That was an exciting drive home.

  4. Greengrass took a good movie and turned it into a great series (if you pretend, like I do, that it stopped with Ultimatum). I think his use of disorienting "documentary" style action is masterful. It's all his bad imitators that have given him a bad name.

  5. Oooh, that's a bunch of pretty great scores right there! Sinbad most of all for me. But Kingdom of Heaven was also clearly quite inspired and I especially like how the Christian and Muslim themes seem to be actually the same one.

  7. I saw TLJ before listening to the soundtrack. I can 100% recommend doing this. I remember the goosebumps forming when the Tie Fighter music came on.

  8. You posting that was so surreal.

  9. There's a case of something similar when Short Round almost falls into the river: It doesn't exactly follow the formula of long trumpet note + trombone interjection + noodling horns though, but at least the instruments come in the same order... Also, may be a bit random but those descending horns in the TPM excerpt are curiously reminiscent of the horns here from Schoenberg's Erwartung...(note the three long notes at the bottom)

  10. Great catch! Never noticed this before now

  11. Kingdom of Heaven is fantastic, and it's a score I'd really love to see get a proper expansion some day (so much is missing). If HGW could bring that same sort of Orientalism and heroic nature to Mulan that would be great.

  12. Cool! I really hope we get the good HGW on this one. With perhaps some influence from JG's original epic score in there. That even made its way into Ralph Wrecks the Internet, so that wouldn't be the most unrealistic thing to hope for...

  13. I've definitely done something like this before when going to the movies by myself.

  14. You sit on the theater and, instead of watching the trailers and annoying advertisement, you just put your headphones and listen to Williams' score until the movie actually begins!

  15. Yup, and Captain Phillips is one of my favorite films of this decade. And he's currently working on a Civil War-era American period piece (a Western!) starring Tom Hanks. Talk about up my alley! American history + Tom Hanks!

  17. The lack of Eddie Murphy is a selling point if anything.

  18. I can only surmise the 'unseen' missions between Quantum Of Solace and Skyfall REALLY took their toll on Bond, because he goes from being a 'freshly minted' 00 agent in QOS to people hinting that he's 'past it' in Skyfall . Maybe the point is that he always proves them wrong?

  19. "The world has moved on, commander Bond" Why is almost every Craig movie so on the nose with trying to make Bond old and washed up? Why can't it be a straight mission by MI6? Why does there always have to be a detour? These movies feel like the producers don't trust the traditional Bond formula at all anymore.

  22. Bond is at least still a heterosexual white man who loves his country and kills in its defence, probably drinks too much, has a sardonic sense of humour and any stability in his personal life is usually short-lived. And thank Christ for that.

  24. I remember pulling out an old external CD-ROM drive just so I could rip the soundtrack to an old laptop that WASN'T hooked up to the internet. I then shared it with a few people here, one of whom shared it on a popular "shrine" and those people were like, "...where are the tags?" There were none because I never added them. THAT was surreal, hahah. I may swing by Epcot when the time comes to pick up my copy of ROS, just for old time's sake.

  25. After a suggestion from @BrotherSound, I tweaked the placement of the alternate version and think this fits substantially better! What does everyone think? Crossfaded into the film version to show how Williams might have intended this version of the cue to continue

  30. Definitely a little mini-trope, yep! Here's some more, just from Star Wars. Most don't follow every technique you listed exactly, but they're doing quite similar stuff. Williams never misses an opportunity for literal-minded mickey mousing when it comes to characters plummeting to their doom.

  32. Yeah it's possible JJ just wanted to hear an alternative approach for Luke's reveal, but they ultimately settled on JW's original version.

  38. I do feel like “Duel of the Fates” is more iconic than it’s sometimes really acknowledged.
    1 point
  39. So Duel of the Fates is the most listened track on all the Star Wars saga, defeating the Main Titles, Imperial March, etc? Also, it's worth noting that, not counting the Home Alone Christmas carols, JW's most listened tracks are from movies from the 90s and early 2000s (Jurassic Park, The Phantom Menace and the first Harry Potter), instead of, for example, the themes from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman and Jaws (which are all from the 70s and 80s). So we can imagine that most people listening to JW on Spotify are on their late teens/twenties, probably remembering their childhoods.

  40. I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for anything (or had my hype so satisfied) as the days leading up to getting the score to TFA. Love re-reading that thread.

  41. The entire score to KotCS is underrated. I'm not gonna claim the same thing about the movie.
    1 point
  42. Yeah I reckon if it kept going a few more seconds, we'd hear the Binary Sunset solo as it appears in the film. We know from TFA's lead French Horn player that the Binary Sunset solo used in the final film was carried over from the original recording, and didn't need to be re-recorded when Williams revised the rest of the cue.

  44. I am happy to say I don't have any particular craving for most of John Williams written source music. The actual complete scores are perfectly enough for me. Except for the missing shawm cue. Never forget!

  45. I always thought the Parade of the Ewoks took its cue from this one. It is 2019--we are no longer allowed to fat-shame via the tuba.
