  1. I think people have speculated about this, but it hadn‘t been confirmed yet (as far as I know). Now, ASM has confirmed in an interview with Bavarian television that JW is indeed writing a new „big“ violin concerto for her. She says it will be premiered „next summer“ (likely meaning summer 2021), even though she also talks about taking a sabbatical next year ( I guess she will make an exception for the premiere?). Here‘s the interview (in German). The relevant part starts at 13:13: I’m hoping that the premiere will bring JW back to central Europe. 😁

  2. I'm way more excited about this than any score he might work on. If I got to pick I'd probably rather have a Piano Concerto than a third Violin one, but I take what JW gives! New concert works are what I most want him to work on.

  6. Isn't it great that, even after his long, hard and frequently frustrating work on the last SW, Williams still has disposition to continue working? I wish to be like this when I reach his age (which will happen in, what, the late 2070s?).

  7. Episode 7 was the best of the series so far! It wasn't even just the nostalgia of seeing Picard with Riker and Troi again, we also finally get some real, interesting character development for Soji, which was very welcome. The series has gotten a LOT better over the last two episodes I'd say.

  9. Meh, I was tempted to do something along these lines, but I've lost the energy. It's like talking to the RCP Opinion Police. You know what, I didn't know Angels & Demons was written largely by others until it was pointed out here a few years ago. I have a digital download of the score, which doesn't come with the booklet, and therefore I didn't have access to any list of additional composers. It says 'Music by Hans Zimmer' on the cover; therefore I assumed the music was by Hans Zimmer. Clearly this was an absolutely preposterous assumption to make. Given the delay t

  12. Yes, there is a lot of lyricism in those pieces (espceially the Elegy, that being a special case), but it is often an angular lyricism. Markings is not too far from the Violin and Horn Concertos really. And I can't say I agree about his recent pieces being completely "academic." The Scerzo, for instance, has a dramatic drive and pulsing fire that academic classical music most often lacks. It is a piece that shows off performer, instrument, and composer. There is no reason to fear, I think, that the second movement of a piano concerto would lack a sort of lyricism.

  13. Thanks for keeping two feet on the ground Thor. Sometimes it seems like Williams could fart into a mic and people here would rush to debate the upcoming potential clarity of it.

  26. Haven't got around to watching the latest ep yet, but this show is all kinds of wrong. Picard/Patrick Stewart is great, the world he lives in Star Trek:Picard isn't. I'm not going to give up on the show, I'll see it through but I'm not liking any of the direction of the story or characters. This show has all the filthy fingerprints of Star Trek Discovery and feels more like a botched alternate timeline instead of the Prime timeline. This show is infuriating to watch because one moment there's genuine passion and a sense that maybe the writers did their homework - then

  32. Won't bother expanding this message because I know it'll be another predictably useless, tired, sarcastic remark. Thanks Chewy. Intrigued to hear some more detail from Mike about what they uncovered for this score. I love hearing the technical details of these expansions; the restoration aspect is as interesting as the creative aspect for me.

  33. Excellent. It really shows what a magnificent little piece this is. I would love a five minute concert piece from Williams. His elegiac approach to the original project was fitting enough at the time, but now it has such a heightened sense of poignancy.

  34. I have been hearing from a lot of people about my lack of discussion about the commercial soundtrack releases. I bring up such things only if it feels like something historic happened with the soundtrack release. Other times, I do record something but take it out in the interest of time and flow of the episode. Besides, my plan since the beginning has been to focus mainly on the music as heard in the film, and the composition itself. But, I will take your comment into consideration going forward. That was the goal that Erik and I made for this episode. We knew there were lots of people w

  35. I don't know any specifics, but I think there's a lot of one hand not talking to the other stuff going on at WB, especially when it comes to Potter stuff, which eventually had its own division created. It's very possible they sent him an outdated music stem from before overlays were added, then later found the right stem to give to the LTP people and never let him know about it. All three scores, despite being recording relatively close to each other time wise, have vastly different archives requiring Mike to follow a pretty different process for each score. Each score

  36. I've been making my way through this over the past weeks. It's a nice listen during my morning and evening commutes. Particularly the episodes concerning Williams's early work were insightful, as I'm rather unfamiliar with anything predating Jane Eyre. I know it's far too late now, but I wish there was some attention to the commercial releases of each score as part of the podcast. It would be nice to know what was out there and which version to look for after hearing each score discussed.

  39. But Thor, talk about limitations. You and your colleagues since years, if not decades, advocate exactly this kind of pale relativism. Let's be honest here: the director guy made himself a movie about an extreme personality, twisted, bipolar, schizophrenic or in whatever terms you might label the Joker's sickness. Now what they came up with to musically convey this 'extreme state' is a distant, impersonal, atmospheric and soulless 'under control' approach that, as we know, many other filmmakers favor over a truly gripping *musical* solution for their weighty dramas since at least t

  40. I listed a rather large selection of stuff that I found good to excellent, even if only fleetingly, in that Best-of thread. But really, stuff like Joker and Ad Astra is what should turn anyone off the art form, the epitome of filmmakers following a regrettably wrong direction, with composers following suit. Sometimes you want to choke the filmmaker, as in Joker's case, why he encourages such a superficial gloss that doesn't contribute anything. I get that clueless critics fall for a stylish accessory like that, but a filmmaker working for months with a composer and the best they come up with i
