  4. The drums what is this a rock band? Stop this madness. I listened to John Powell and now never again. Don't listen to that man but John Towner Williams is my best friend, so keep that orchestra real man. Too loud for me all this rumble rumble stuff. My worn out shoe has more soul than this what the hell. And the drums again are awful I know my perucssion cuz my brother's physician's niece's godfather's second cousin Ted, he has a dog, and the guy who walks it is a part-time freelance timpanist and he told me all about cheap drums and omg these are those. Very cheap and I saw a little kid with this drums through the window of the dollar store and it's cheap imported plastic drums for sure. I cannot believe this hype I gotta go back to listen to Rogue One now bye-bye.

  9. 100% confirmed. John Williams leaves his Christmas decorations up all year. Also, congrats, @Will! I remember when you were just a youngling around here, back in the TFA days. Sorry your senior year had to end on Zoom, but at least you now have the choice of "The Rise of Skywalker" and "Reunion" to go along with "The Throne Room" and "Augie's Great Municipal Band" on your virtual graduation playlist!

I'm not ending it with that cheesy- Assistant: Also, don't forget to remind them who you are. JW: -_- WTF, they know who I- Assistant: 3, 2, I... JW: Hello, this is... I'm John Williams... *internal agony*

  21. A year from now, the accepted wisdom at JWFan will be that Williams really wrote 90% of the score himself and Powell just came in after to overdub disco drums.

  23. Ferdinand definitely belongs in the discussion. I wouldn't credit Williams much with Powell's recent developments as a composer...I don't think there's any evidence for that. I feel like if anything the bigger influence would be the Star Wars score study he mentioned doing for Solo. He said it was "devastating him hard" reading that music so closely I think the fact that Powell started doing fewer movies may be one reason his music has gotten seemingly richer in recent years. It seems that he's also become more philosophical about the kinds of movies he chooses to do, giving his music a stronger point of view. For a long time he always struck me as a supreme work-for-hire talent but he's become more interesting lately, it feels like there's more authorship going on. Also the more heartbreaking side of it which can be tasteless to speculate too much, but he did lose his wife to cancer in 2016. It's been noted here before that Williams lost Barbara Ruick in 1974, just before he began a remarkable creative period. Coincidence, maybe.

  26. The album version It has an extended middle part for woodwinds and the ending from the winds is very somber. The Film Version This one has a truncated middle part and the cue ends abruptly. L2P concert version The same as the film version, but the ending is very triumphant by the entire orchestra. This cues ends Act One of the L2P concert.

  31. There's no instruction to overlap into another cue at the end of I Have To Get Back, so we have to assume Hux's Speech was unscored. But who knows for sure. The score has many mysteries, with the film changing constantly during the 12 months JW was working on it. I haven't read the novelization but there's reference to lots of Leia material which never saw the light of day either (including a speech after the Starkiller destruction, where Leia informed the base that the Republic's entire fleet was destroyed in the attack... I wouldn't be surprised if Williams scored a lot of this early material, based on cue titles that have leaked).

  32. I suppose a fresh rebuild from analog elements would be possible, though now that Disney owns Fox it all becomes trickier. I think MM would prioritize scores that haven't been expanded yet over a score that's had two expansions and sold 6,000 copies combined

  34. So yesterday (May 11) I watched the live conversation “horn hangout” of Sarah Willis and Stefan Dohr from the Berlin Philharmonic and questions could be ask by the viewers. So I (and probably also other people with me) asked whether the orchestra would consider inviting JW to conduct his music with them. She replied: “we asked him, but unfortunately he doesn’t....well, it didn’t work out. So we’ll keep asking!” So at least any rumors that the orchestra is too traditional for such a collaboration are untrue. How wonderful would it be if this would happen one day... See her remark at 22’10:

  36. I think the interview, or at least parts of it, will still be in the upcoming documentary (or video essay?) "The World without Beethoven". In the production company's showreel, there is a snippet from the interview. The World without Beethoven part starts at 6:07, the JW snippet is at 7:15 : http://www.bfmi.at/showreel.html I would be weird if the entire interview was only about Beethoven, though.

  38. Disney uploaded a video of the Rise of the Resistance ride at Galaxy's Edge and used some of the symphonic suite to score it. The very beginning is new to me, but it might have been used elsewhere before.

  43. Thanks so much! Great to hear you enjoyed the second task. To clarify, we'll be posting the full audio of the score that will sync with the film. We'd love to mix it in properly too, but that can get messy legally and technically. We also won't be uploading the entire video of the film. So we'll upload our work for viewers to have as a movie-length file that can easily be matched for playback. We hope you will enjoy a score-only version! MS

  46. I'll eat my hat if Williams didn't write this: jurassicjello · Return to the Village If it's Powell, his skill at replicating the warmth of Williams' style without being an obvious pastiche is more masterful than I thought. This sounds like a hybrid of War Horse and The Phantom Menace. I can imagine Williams being attracted to this scene because it's reminiscent of the Lucas SW endings. No dialogue, music takes center stage, an opportunity for the main theme to shine. Plus, one of the last appearances of his theme in the score (barring Dice and Roll, which he also wrote). In fact, the French horn and woodwind sections of that cue have seemingly been adapted into this earlier cue (albeit with a brief Powell theme in the middle): jurassicjello · Falcon To Hyperspace Arguably, if not for what happened on Rogue One, Williams wouldn't have gotten involved with Solo in the first place.
